GTA 5: Last-gen vs. this-gen comparisons

Looks like Rockstar did a good job taking advantage of the new hardware. Can't wait to play the definitive version of GTA V on the Xbox One.

Can't wait to play the preeminent version on PC. The preeminent version WITH mods, it'll be the preemodiment version!

Seriously, watching the vids gives a real sense of a world that's alive and I'm dying to play this.

The only thing that might suck is that with all the new traffic on the streets it'll be more difficult to get anywhere in a real hurry.

That is where 'Monster Truck' mods come in.
Can't get past traffic? Just roll over it.

I usually don't like to use mods that subvert the developers vision of the game. Most of the mods I use are graphical and quality of life stuff (oHud, iHud, bag management, etc...).

But GTAV is an entirely different beast and I could very well see myself using some crazy mods like the Hulk and Iron Man ones I've seen in videos.

There was a traffic density control for the PC version of GTA IV. I assume GTA V will have a similar option.

Yeah, but I'll crank it all the way up if possible because it makes the game feel more alive. One thing I never paid any attention to in prior GTA titles though...

Do they have "realiistic" traffic patterns? Like traffic is more heavy during rush hour an so forth?

I can't wait to get stuck in traffic and set off chain explosions killing hundreds and gunning down just as many. NRA would be proud of me.

After doing the aforementioned and the cops try to arrest me, there should be a button that allows your character to scream out "Freedom of speech!" "2nd Amendment!" "STAND YOUR GROUND!" "Oh, I'm sorry I thought this was Mericuh!"

That would make it complete for me.

I used to love to find spots on buildings that the NPCs couldn't get to. Then, loaded up with all sorts of heavy weaponry start a massacre and see how long I could last.

Would often block the road in IV to let traffic build up before chucking a grenade and watching the chain of explosions.

I just hope they get online Heists in for the launch of this version. Way too much filler being added and not enough substance. I mean Hipster cloths, really. We wanna rob s*** R*. Not dress like an A-hole.

Digital Foundry did an analysis of the trailer. Here are a few excerpts:

--- quoting ---

Perhaps the most obvious improvement concerns the sheer wealth of life added to the game. Traffic count is hugely increased and there are a wealth of NPCs compared to last-gen, transforming the city environments. More natural elements receive a significant overhaul as well: water looks more realistic, trees are almost entirely redrawn giving them a much fuller appearance while huge fields of grass have been added where once there were none.

...

On a more technical level, a common element we see throughout every scene in the teaser trailer is upgraded texture work, where we see a huge bump in quality.

...

There's also object density to consider. Nearly every shot in the trailer featuring a major road shows significantly more traffic on-screen. It certainly creates the illusion of a busier environment and adds to the realism.

...

Lighting and related effects see a nice boost as well. The fuller tree models now appear to more realistically reflect the lighting and shadow conditions around them. The effects used to accentuate vehicle headlights are intensified while the sunlight filtering through the ocean appears much richer.

...

Obviously the question of performance remains a mystery at this point and one we're eager to answer when the time comes. GTA 5 simply didn't run very well on PS3 or 360. Sure, for those particular platforms, it was an incredibly impressive game, but frame-rate rarely managed to stick close to the 30fps target leading to a rather inconsistent experience. This trailer certainly doesn't suffer from any such dips, but we'll have to wait and see if Rockstar can maintain a stable frame-rate this time out. We can tell, at least, that the PS4 version appears to be operating at a native 1920x1080, though certain sections certainly show plenty of aliasing. Image quality is a huge step-up from the last-gen versions, however.

anybody else wish this remake was actually Red Dead Redemption ?

Looks really good. Everything they have doe just makes for a more believable world. More traffic, more foliage, grass. More sea Life and animals on a whole. Lots more traffic and pedestrians to add to the hustle ad bustle of modern city life. The Lighting and shadows are what stick out most for me. The world just seems to have depth.

What was already an amazingly detailed game just went crazynessgonemad and really showed devs what a current gen open world game has to top. Good luck to all the developers on that.

RDR2 is going to be insane

Well news of a PC version still goes on so maybe they will bring it to Xbox One and PS4 nearer to RDR2?

News of Half-Life 3 still goes on too though. I Hope it comes, but odds are it will not. If a PC version was coming it would have happened a long time ago, me thinks. Still, fingers crossed:)

I guess RDR for PC did not come out purely because of logistics. If you think about it, the 3 non-mobile games from Rockstar that did not see the PC version last gen - Table Tennis, Midnight Club, and RDR - are from Rockstar San Diego, which had a totally troubled history until a year after RDR's release. And then it just missed the time, and other Rockstar studios were too busy working on something else.

The RDR code was rumored to be a mess and too difficult to port. Either way, I'd take a GTA 5 improved version over a RDR improved version any day.
