What they should do is push Xbox One version to 2022. Completely shift gears so this maximizes the Series X, then do the best they can to downgrade to Xbox One S in 2022, but turn that task over to a third party.

I nominate you to take Bonnie Ross' job, that just makes too much sense.

I don't get it, to take full advantage of the new hardware at this point they'd almost have to start over wouldn't they? why bother cancelling the old consoles now when you've already been building the game around their limitations for years and were pretty much done? I'm not saying they are wrong I just don't think this "rumor" makes much sense at this point.

well ms has been working on the x since the one x, or even longer, that two tone neared man said exactly how long they had maybe two or three times already. So if that’s the case I’m sure 343 has had insight of what the x was and would be whilst in development of their new engine (slipspace). But they probably don’t/didn’t have final hardware as well...seeing as ray tracing was gonna be implemented afterwards. One guess would be is that they’re not accustomed to developing, for what maybe, five consoles and multiple pc variants so, um, yee... down with Lockhart!
 
Ditch xbox one support (except for mp which might be easier to gimp), add RT at launch, fix animations and characters and weapons graphics and I think they're home with this one.

Graphics don't get held back unless the entire art style is catering to the old hardware (which is what you may get in multiplayer games that are cross play). Ask a dev who makes or has made assets. For single player games, quality of textures, lighting, draw distances, etc. are not held back by old hardware. There's nothing logical about that when you can see for yourself on PC the wide gap of hardware games can support and the vast difference from lowest settings to highest in some games.

Game design is built around the lowest common denominator. Game design happens early in the process. This game's foundation was set well before Series X dev kits were a thing. On contrary, if your game is designed to run on older hardware, there is more headroom for new hardware to push all that extra power into visuals and polish. Which is what made the build surprising. Things like pop in and lighting should be better due to the fact the game design is simplified for old hardware.

Where old hardware could indirectly hold back a game is people resources. If it's a struggle, can delay development progress if both versions have to launch at once. This is where some 343 devs are behind the scenes complaining. Despite that meme'd demo, there is a lot less concern about the Series X version. Theoretically, devs believe less platforms mean more manpower, more shared practices and more cohesion of a team towards one thing therefore making it better. In reality, that manpower (and many of their jobs) only exists because there is multiple platforms. 343 wouldn't have 1000 devs nor would they financially be able to justify 1000 devs if they were making the game only for Series X which will have a tiny base of gamers through 2021. Halo Infinite is the most expensive game Microsoft has ever funded because it can push Game Pass subs and gain massive mindshare leveraging free to play multiplayer across multiple consoles and PC. No super expensive game is made just for the fans. They're all made because gaming is big business.

Regardless, having more tools in your tool box doesn't guarantee better game design. I've been replaying the Bungie Halos. Despite having the most re-used and repetitive assets in Halo CE, that game is still amazing to play today. Even better at 60fps. The July 23rd Infinite build looked fun to play and I've been a bit more excited about it after playing these older Bungie sandbox's. If that's an example of what we can expect in terms of sandbox, it really could be the best Halo we've had in awhile. They just need time to polish and improve the foundation. If you're playing the campaign on Xbox One, sorry for your loss...of textures, lighting and draw distances.
 
They, 343, were following in bungies footsteps, releasing two games, a remaster and then they flew too close to the sun and decided to make their third game for not only the next gen but current and pc on their own...they could’ve handed that development to other indie devs like bungie with two and three but noooooo, burn them wings you grew :p
 
So Cyberpunk is being held back because of Xbox One?
We know Flight Simulator 2020 was held back because of the Xbox One. Had they not had to plan around the Xbox One, the game would have had flight attendants, in flight movies, and an achievement for the Mile High Club.

If they've been in development for 5 years and this was the best they could come up with visual wise this close to the launch date (even with COVID) then I think they had some set backs with engine development which seriously hampered actual game development.

If it wasn't for Xbox One, you could make it rain in real life from the games' settings.

I don't doubt it. I bet that engine had to be revised too when the Series X started coming into the scene. They have to build to a theoretical spec, then readjust. That alone probably messed with development because everything has to be built around running on it.

The big question mark is hearing them talk about how advanced an engine it is and then seeing that demo. Makes me wonder what else it does. for all we know it can have a thousand AI run characters on screen. I've definitely read that the engine will allow for graphical improvements in the game over time as the years go on. Maybe there is some crazy cloud integration into the engine. Who knows. Gonna have to wait now regardless :(

Building your own game engine is a daunting, time consuming, and expensive task and it's why a lot of companies use 3rd party or other middleware (Unreal, CryEngine, etc.).
