I was accused of being racist yesterday. Long read. Kind of irked.

I'm not saying anything like that. There's a difference between choosing to leave a job in a way that benefits you, and telling your manager and a dickweed customer to go f*** themselves.
I say having self pride does benifit him and a job that envolves pumping gas isn't worth losing it.

Here's an interesting fact (betcha many people out there didn't know about this): Many people assume that there are many different types of color skins in the world. Technically-speaking, there's only one-color pigment: Brown. White people are considered "light brown" and black people= dark brown. ;)

Nah, losing your temper and getting fired would make the instigator gleeful. He would "win," in a sense.

The boss isn't the problem here, unless he starts to blame Eric. He's just doing what bosses usually do.

For the record, I never said any of those things the TC claims I did.

Thats what horrible bosses that you need to tell to go fuk yourself do. There is never a time where a customer is aloud to curse at your employee...ever. If the boss heard this customr cursing /yelling at his assoiciate then he should have told that customer to leave the property.
That guy "won' when he didn't stand up for himself and let that guy walk all over him...period.

You can't quit your job every time you get mad at your boss or a customer (or both). You'll never make any money.
Getting mad at your boss is one thing but having your boss let someone call you a p****/asswhole/racist is another. It's pumping gas for petes sake.

Nah, losing your job over something like this would be a stupid move. If your boss is an a-hole, that's something else -- then it's quitting time. But a-hole customers come and go and are everywhere. You need to learn to deal with them, not lose your job every time you run into one. If you lose control and end up getting fired, then they have the power, not you.

You don't get it.

Erics wins when he finds a new and better job because he didn't blow up at his old one.

Think about it in terms of his next job interview. When an employer asks him how he handled a difficult situation... should he:

(a) "I told my boss to go f*** himself."
(b) "I had a disrespectful customer call me names. I felt like I was a good person in a bad situation, but stayed above it and remained patient with the customer, brought in my manager, and then asked my manager afterwards for ways he thought we could handle situations like that better in the future. We didn't have a clear policy on abusive customers, so we drafted one and brought it to the business owner. Regardless of the outcome, I felt like I recognized an underlying issue and created a workable solution."

Well lets just hope the next guy this customer call names and treats like s*** has the same type of wonderful experiance where the employee is the better man and takes all his s***.So he can keep doing it over and over and lets hope all this s*** taking helps people move forward in there gas pumping careers.

Idiots are going to be idiots.

The best you can do is try and keep your cool and accommodate people to the best of your ability.

I wouldn't put much thought into this man... when your job involves dealing with customers; you run the chance of encountering irrational people dozens of times each day and on any given day one of them might just be dumb enough to start talking and prove how dumb they can be.

Clearly the person doesn't know you, so really... how much do you give a s***? It's not like the guy is basing this on anything other than feeling slighted because HE was being an ass.

EricS, it sounds like you handled it very well.
I don't think you need to worry much about his accusations of racism. After all, he incorrectly identified you as an anus, and someone who engages in incest with his own mother as well as suggesting that he has knowledge of future events. Why let one more incorrect insult bother you?

I remember catching some flak when I was dating my ex. She's white and I'm black. Her dad hated me, and people would give us s*** for being an interracial couple. She stuck by me though if anything. The ignorance of some people just can't be helped sadly.

So what is a Smurf considered?

You work in the hospitality industry don't you?

If you think this is weird, then you haven't seen the whole thing, bro. Plenty of crazy people out there. My wife is experiencing similar to yours. Because I am black and she is white, she has ran into couple of black females (it happens from time to time) that suggested she shouldn't date/marry me. They believe that black should date with black and white should date with white. It's amazing what they think of that. It just show you that they simply do not know nor understand what truly love is like. My wife and I have been together 6 years (5 years of marriage) and a beautiful baby (he's 5 yrs old but still baby in my eyes. ;)) So I feel your pain. Usually we just ignore them and focus on ourselves. They have their own problems for sure.

I told my lady that this might happen to her. Happened in High School all the time, Black girls would get so pissed if the "good looking" Black guys were with white girls. Best part about their irritation is that these girls were all half white just like myself and yet they preached this racial purity bulls***.

Sorry for high jacking your thread Erics, you were treated like s*** for no reason other than that fool wanting to be treated like he is the center of the damn solar system.

From this story alone, I'm sure you'll go farther in life than this man. And not just in terms of your future career.

Sure buddy.

I once heard say a lie 100 times and you'll end up believing that lie yourself. ;)

Now back to the topic. These things happen. Unfortunately we are living in times where a lot of people specially grown folks haven't grown up. They are adults but mentally they are still freaking teenagers. You will bump into them a lot. The best him to do is chalk it up and ignore it.

I mean there is always the other option and get violent just so they can have a taste of their own medicine but what would be the point in that when you are trying to get somewhere in life and they are comfortable with where they are at.

And this bad behavior doesn't only apply to blacks it also applies to many fellow Hispanic of mine... And whites to an extent (the redneck type).

Most likely the guy was compensating for a poor and violent upbringing. His own or one he saw on television.

*shrug*

The guy was first and you helped the other guy and left dude standing there un-helped.

Sounds like you were being passive aggressive.

Doesn't deserve the racist remark, but I don't see why you are so upset by it. The guy was kind of a dick customer and you chose to basically not help him.. you expect a dick to say something nice in return?

Thanks for the words, everyone. I was kind of just venting a bit.

I probably could have handled the situation better and I guess I will wait and see for what comes of this whole thing. I didn't mean to sound like a complainer because I know there's people out there who are quick to overreact and will say things that they probably don't necessarily mean.

It was just a weird situation for me. I have never been called racist and to be called it by an irate African-American bothered me, admittedly.

I agree.

It reminds me of a waitresses having problems with the French (I'll just call them the French). The French have a reputation for tipping poorly so the waitress decides to prioritize the other tables that she expect to get better tips from. It's a self fulfilling prophecy. The waitress guarantees she will get a poor tip by providing a poor service.

In this case, the decision the op made to wait on the "more cooperative" patron first escalated the situation unnecessarily. Then when he refused to serve him entirely the situation escalated even further.

It sounds like you took it upon your self to punish this guy for his rude behavior. Was he your first rude customer?

Worst case scenario (extremely unlikely) is you get fired for "racism", because corprate doesn't want to take the chance. Even in this situation the only way something like that would follow you is if your past is heavily scrutinized in some way. Like you were to apply to be in the FBI, become a celebrity, or run for a major public office position. Even then I think it would be hard to find.

Well crap, guess Erics is never going to be president. :really:

Even then it would be a smear campaign. Owen Wilson claimed he was a skinhead when he was 13-14 years old and I can't find a trace of that info anywhere on the net. One of his friends sold him out to a tabloid (probably) and I guess he was trying to get out in front of it.

Ted Danson dressed up in black face once and you never hear about that now.

Something like what the OP did won't affect him at all.
