By "indie," I just mean a smaller, bite-sized game, not necessarily a game by an "indie" studio, whatever that is. So, some of the games below are from large developers, including my own pick, Valiant Hearts. I've just listed the games that seemed to stand out to me, in the discussions here and elsewhere.

I'm sure I've missed a few, and that's why there are placeholder spots. If you want to nominate a game that isn't listed, just do so, and I'll put it in one of those spots.

I'd vote for Shadow Run Returns: Dragonfall or Endless Legend

Leaning toward Endless Legend because it out Civ'd Civilization: Beyond Earth and that's no easy feat.

I would add vanishing of Ethan carter, broken sword 5.

HEARTHSTOOOOONE!

I also nominate Broken Age but Hearthstone needs to win.

Done. Hearthstone, Endless Legend, and Vanishing of Ethan Carter added to poll. I limited it to one nomination per person.

I haven't played all those on the list, but I gotta go with Ethan Carter on this one. It was an excellent trip down mystery lane.

The Vanishing of Ethan Carter has my vote. I was surprised how beautiful the environment was. Gameplay is a bit odd, but it's a charm.

Honorable mention:

This War of Mine

Youtube it.

Only one I've played is Endless Legend but pretty much want to play all the others on the list.

I need to spend more time with Endless Legend but I think I agree. I've played two games of Beyond Earth and honestly don't feel like playing anymore.

This shouldn't even be close. Valiant Hearts.

Valiant Hearts? Good God man, Hearthstone is free for goodness sakes! To hell with people who don't recognize its craftsmanship!

I'm sure it's a good game, but surely you can admit it's not for everyone. Just the genre itself.

I got 200 turns in Beyond earth and finished it. I haven't felt the urge to go back. Endless Legend on the other hand, I just won an expansion victory with the Broken Lords and can't wait to give it anther shot with a different race. Can't explain it.

Food for thought:

How is Hearthstone even an indie game? It's published by Blizzard.

Sane goes for Valiant Hearts actually. Published by Ubisoft.

They aren't really. I mentioned the issue in the OP. By "indie," I just mean small games, not games developed by "indie" teams.

Andy straightened it up.

Didn't read the rest of the thread, sue me.

Original post mentioned this specific definition of what an indie game is well before you posted. You clicked on a thread and commented without reading the first post.

I still like you but lets not try to cover up dishonesty with more dishonesty ok?

TLDR: Merry Christmas!

I said, "Didn't read the rest of the thread, sue me.".

That is me admitting I did not read the rest of the thread which would include the first post.

I tend to think "rest of thread" refers to post number two and onward. When you say "rest of thread" this implies you read part of the thread. We don't consider the title to be part of thread.

How does that egg on your face taste?

Nope. Rest would be from my perspective. I posted, so I had to see my own post. So you can conclude from that, rest means every post except my own.

tl;dr: Merry Christmas to you too!

I am happy with the outcome of this exchange.

If anyone has any other favorites they want included, let me know.

Trails in the Sky: First Chapter is my choice for this year. I keeps the old school gaming truly alive much like the Y's series does, and like Y's, it is properly outfitted for HD and easy to progress through the story without having to run around to every corner trying to activate a random event trigger that's holding your story progression back.
