People that have a strong work ethic with a desire to succeed make it regardless of intelligence. Nobody should settle on a burger job or should this job be seen as a way to financial stability, respect etc. These are entry level jobs for youth to get into the workforce. They should never be looked at as careers. Now that doesn't mean there isn't a career in the food industry as you can be a waiter/waitress or a manager. But burger flipper.....give me a break.
There's a lot of reasons why someone might be flipping burgers when they aren't 16. And for whatever reasons those may be (criminal record, sudden unemployment, misspent youth) it shouldn't condemn them to a life of poverty. And waiters don't exactly make a fortune either.
I'm not saying they should be paid a huge salary, but it should be respectable.
What if it's a solo mother who was previously supported by her husband, who is now out of the picture for whatever reason?
What if it's a guy who just got out of prison and hasn't got a penny to his name?
Or a guy who had a decent job but got laid off due to the economy and he had to take whatever he could because he has a mortgage to pay?
Someone with mental illness who can't hold down a job with greater responsibility?
Someone whose IQ is just a couple of points away from being r******d?
What if it's someone who WANTS to get to be the store manager of McDonalds, but has to start at the bottom?
Any/all of these people need a wage that can support them, and consider what the alternative is if they can't make their rent payments. In extreme circumstances, we're looking at crime, homelessness, suicide? None of which I like to see a lot of, in my neighbourhood.
Outside of that, inflation generally rises faster than wages, so there really needs to be something to keep those at the bottom of the income ladder above water.
