just how dumb are minimum wage laws?

I just bought a Big Mac for $5.11 from an employee making $7.35 an hour.

In his scenario Bob would have made out like a bandit without the need for a min wage increase. But we all know IRL that doesn't really happen, instead Bob would continue to produce great results and never get rewarded for it making him a bitter underpaid employee who now spits in the food.

IRL Bob would have graduated high school and got a real job...learning the meaning of hard work.

Unless Bobs an idiot.

Pretty simple explanation of how wages effect employment rates.

And that's a conveniently low profit margin per hour for him to make his "point" lol.

You must be chalk full of data showing past minimum wage increases cost people loads of jobs right?

*crickets*

Oh wait.. they haven't...

IRL.... the economy crashed and burned.

Lot's of people lost jobs and had to scramble to find work. Maybe of them probably have "damaged work histories" now because they accepted work flipping burgers and now Human Resources automatically chucks their resume in the garbage.

Some people really aren't that smart (half the population is "below-average") and struggle to get "good jobs" as a result of that. But stupid people don't deserve anything like financial stability, respect etc.

People that have a strong work ethic with a desire to succeed make it regardless of intelligence. Nobody should settle on a burger job or should this job be seen as a way to financial stability, respect etc. These are entry level jobs for youth to get into the workforce. They should never be looked at as careers. Now that doesn't mean there isn't a career in the food industry as you can be a waiter/waitress or a manager. But burger flipper.....give me a break.

f*** minimum wage, there should be no restriction on how low someone can be paid. 50cents an hour will teach them some work ethic

So now they only serve 220 burgers a hour, are the other 90 customers content to wait in line or are they at another burger joint that has adequate staffing levels?

Cost of goods rise with inflation, labor costs need to rise with it. Otherwise the burger flippers eventually won't be able to afford the burgers they flip.

Well Al makes 100 burgers an hour that sell for 5.00, but somehow most of that $500 worth of burgers sold vanishes into thin air. Unless those stoves and lights are powered by incinerating endangered albino rhinoceros horns...

There's a lot of reasons why someone might be flipping burgers when they aren't 16. And for whatever reasons those may be (criminal record, sudden unemployment, misspent youth) it shouldn't condemn them to a life of poverty. And waiters don't exactly make a fortune either.

I'm not saying they should be paid a huge salary, but it should be respectable.
What if it's a solo mother who was previously supported by her husband, who is now out of the picture for whatever reason?
What if it's a guy who just got out of prison and hasn't got a penny to his name?
Or a guy who had a decent job but got laid off due to the economy and he had to take whatever he could because he has a mortgage to pay?
Someone with mental illness who can't hold down a job with greater responsibility?
Someone whose IQ is just a couple of points away from being r******d?
What if it's someone who WANTS to get to be the store manager of McDonalds, but has to start at the bottom?

Any/all of these people need a wage that can support them, and consider what the alternative is if they can't make their rent payments. In extreme circumstances, we're looking at crime, homelessness, suicide? None of which I like to see a lot of, in my neighbourhood.

Outside of that, inflation generally rises faster than wages, so there really needs to be something to keep those at the bottom of the income ladder above water.

Depends on the profit margin of said burgers.

He's just pointing out how convenient it is for the video that they used a nearly non existent profit margin.

Too high of a minimum wage increase can have the affect the video claims would happen.. but it's not "all minimum wage increases cause job loss".. we've had numerous minimum wage hikes at a national/local level and they generally don't.

For one: having to pay your employees more encourages expansion of a business, not contraction of it. If profit per employee goes down the only way to maintain profits is to expand.

I've seen some pretty good math suggesting that some of the more ridiculous proposed / fought for wage hikes could have a very real affect on the ability for businesses to stay open, but it's not some across the board "dumb" thing to do as the OP suggests. It's a balance.

Min wage increase needs to stay with inflation. No one wants to make min wage, but a lot of people including myself in the past would not be able to live without it at times. I'm not dogging Cody32599 but I don't think he has a full view of the way things are. Sometimes life gives you lemons and you can't make lemonade because they're rotten.
