just how dumb are minimum wage laws?

How about Labor Unions?

Could they be a way to Find Balance instead of a one size fits all approach? Let the employee use the right to organize and use collective bargaining to negotiate a fair wage.

We're not allowed to form unions at almost every job available in FL. Almost all companies make you sign a paper upon hire saying you will forfeit your job if you attempt to form a union or join one.

The Governments original purpose was to serve and protect the common citizen. Minimum wage is one the ways it does this. Not everyone is going to be able to afford college or have the cognitive ability to perform in that environment; therefore, minimum wages helps these people. Is it perfect and fair for everyone? No. To make another point McDonald's has a 5yr profit margin of 20%. In 2009 they had 9.5 million net profit to invest in new stores/new employ's/bonus for CEOs. A company, like an evolving organism, must always grow so if you are not growing you are dying.

We would be possibly supporting a lot more homeless people without min. wage, so having min wage in reality might save us money in the long wrong. If you want more examples of that you can looking into ecological services and how they relate to economic value to save the state/government money.

Well, no. I elaborated and responded to you saying it's for 16 year olds.
I just pointed out a bunch of examples of why older people with financial responsibilities, who weren't simply lacking in work ethic, could be in the job. If you want to say those people deserve to be poor because of poor life choices, that's fine. Otherwise you're saying those people don't exist and my examples are strictly hypothetical and don't actually happen in reality.
It was a joke as you double posted......now it feels tainted.

Whoops, my bad. Please accept my humble apologies. I thought it seemed uncharacteristically smarmy of you with the "lol". I didn't even know I double posted until you pointed it out. My browser automatically shoots down to the latest post. I'll delete those last two then. :smash:

BTW....I haven't said we don't need a minimum wage...I just don't think it should be so much you can make a career out of burger flipping jobs. These jobs are for entery level people to get into the work force and at worst a last resort. They are for college kids and high school kids.If you want a job like this to support yourself then you need to get 2 of those jobs.

but I guess we can make the burden higher on that business owner to pay more for the life choices of that guy that just got out of prison...or the guy that got laid off but didn't save for the future. The only people I feel for in your exceptions are the mentally challenged that I believe there is government assistance for so that is one of the few things my tax dollars work well for. We will do this under the discise that "big business" and evil Mcdonalds are the only people getting hurt and mom and pop store aren't effected.

Other countries have a sane minimum wage and are doing just as well if not better then America, so what do the people who believe that the minimum should either be abolished, lowered, or kept at the same level think of that?.

I just got to say, "at worst" has happened for a lot of folks. And they are taking 2 sometimes 3 jobs to support there family. Sometimes you can be too broke not to go to prison, I'm in that situation now. I've been out of work for over a year, living with my father (whole family is) and I'm attempting to get the 1,000+ dollars to keep myself out of jail for 2 months. s*** happens my friend. I don't think it's right to say those jobs are reserved for certain people of a certain age, and when you're an adult you expect to be treated like one, even if it's just enough pay to feed yourself.

Pride can be such a silly thing. Why people would rather collect unemployment than flip burgers or sell shoes is beyond me. In my life I have wore many hats and those experiences have made me a better man, husband and father. I've done everything from cleaning floors to managing enterprise sized networks. People need to get off this "beneath me" mindset, get off their butts and earn some dough. I know it's hard but sometimes we gotta do what we gotta do.

I don't think a reasonable and fair minimum wage needs to bankrupt mom and pop stores.
The US minimum wage according to this, is significantly lower than even the nearest comparison. If small businesses can survive in all those other countries, why not the US? Do US businesses really need to have such a large wealth gap to survive? And, as Bunz pointed out, higher wages can actually drive expansion.

One of my friends is one of the smartest people I know - he wasn't much of a bookworm/studying type, but in higher school his final exam marks were in line and sometimes better than the Asian study machines.
But he's not particularly ambitious or outgoing and he worked in a menial job for almost 20 years. He was working in a large bakery that supplied most supermarkets with most of the different brands of bread and most of his co-workers had criminal records, low education etc. but people often asked him why he does such a crappy job when he's so smart, and he said that people who eat bread shouldn't be looking down on him for it, and that they should be happy to have a capable, intelligent, conscientious person making something they put in their mouths every day, rather than just criminals and people who don't care.

No, the original and Only purpose of governments is protect individual liberty not protect random groups of individuals.

Nobody can't afford an college education these day and you know why? blame the government interference in the market via price controls

This mostly goes for people who are over the age of 25... But people under 25 should read as well.

But seriously, if you are so constrained in your skill set and social networking that you are forced to take a minimum wage job after you get laid off (and here in 2014 it is ~when~ not if, there are no longer lifetime jobs) then you need to grow and develop yourself. You need to be a professional at work, and learn to figure out when this job is ending so you can have an exit plan. All jobs end, and good jobs do not fall out of the sky. Those contacts and skills take years to develop, and if you ask yourself the question "What would I do if my workplace burned down this evening" and you don't have two or three backup plans ready to go, you are screwed, and you are doing it to your self. It is no ones fault but yours.

Forget minimum wage. It is not enough to live off of, and was never designed that way. It is a minimum standard to business (not you the employees) to conduct business. It says to the business community, if your employees can't make at least this much money, take your business to a different venue.

Yes, as I business owner I could put people to work at $3 an hour, and I there would be plenty of takers at that rate even here in the midwest. But I don't think I would make any money off of employees who work for $3 an hour. I would needs dozens if not hundred of employees to match my compensation at that rate. (I figure I could make $3 an hour off of an employee that I paid $3 an hour) No instead, I wan't to spend my time making $30 an hour off of a guy that I pay $30 an hour. The problem I have as a business person is the pool of people who are worth $30 an hour is much smaller than the pool of people who are worth $10 an hour. But if you have a skill that I can utilize and are worth $30 an hour, I will be happy to pay it.

That guy who I pay $30 an hour, he is worth more to me that three guys at $10 an hour, or ten guys at $3.

End this minimum wage entitlement welfare s***, it is dragging you down.
