From 2D CGI to 3D

That's my dawg

So you guys are investing on a joystick, or using pad?

The madcatz stick will be available at launch? Have we other (aka cheaper) options? The price is a bit steep, consider KI is the only fighting game announced for next gen.

Killer Instinct for Xbox One is "faster than almost any fighter out there", is "almost like a real fight"

"It begins once you get punched in the face," explains lead producer

Killer Instinct for Xbox One is defined by speed, design director David Verfaillie has told OXM - but not to the extent that victory defaults to the combatant with the fastest thumbs. Double Helix and Rare have apparently created a "tournament viable" fighter that's as much about strategy and observation as pulling off six quarter-roll specials a second.

"Killer Instinct was an aggressive game and that's something we've really taken to heart," Verfaillie explained to us as part of a preview you'll read in issue 104, on sale now. "The pace of our game, I think, is faster than almost any other fighter out there, and all the action really happens up close." Maintaining a high frame rate has been a top priority, he said. "The game will run at 60 frames. Definitely. The fighting game community demands it."

There's such a thing as too nippy for comfort, however. "We don't want this to be about who can move their hands the fastest," Verfaillie added later. "We want it to be a bout who can read their opponent the best, who can take control of the fighting space the best."
Among the key DNA strands that mark the new Killer Instinct out from the crowd is the infamous combo-breaker, whereby you interrupt the other player's onslaught by tapping punch and kick simultaneously (fail, and you'll be unable to react for a precious second or two).

This makes for a more fluid interplay between attack and defence, Verfaillie interjected. "When you're in a combo in a lot of other games, it's pretty much a one-way interaction. You just have to kind of sit there and wait until it's over."

In other and slightly less convincing news, lead producer Michael Willette has this to say. "Killer Instinct is almost like a real fight. It begins once you get punched in the face." Hmmm. In my experience, Michael, fights tend to begin with uncontrollable sobbing, thrown crockery and exaggerated claims about children you don't have.

In fighting game, faster doesn't mean better. I do not know who came out with this thinking. Also faster means less beginner friendly, & being new fighting game player freindly is one of the objective if I remember. Street Fighter 4 delibately slow down the pace to promote more strategy, & less about who has the fastest fingers, or finger coordination skills, like their Marvel games. The Marvel games are fun, but promote more about execution than tactics.

Being too slow of course, also have its problem, as you will be able to see most moves in advance, & become a counter game, like vinilla Fight fighter 2. Every jump attack can be counter with an anti-air by reaction (unless you are in middle of a move like fireball), as the jump animation is so slow, & explain why most people use a fireball character.

The fine line, in my view, is a speed with a fine window, where you can react, but only if you are very alert, & the stategy is to have mixed up to caught the other off guard or confuse them, or make them think they can react only to be counter.

Also, while I am happy that they design for the game to be tournament-able, & they speak often about it. What concern me, is that they did not seems to talk much about the gameplay of the average players, or beginners. I do hope they also think about beginners, and have some testers that isn't evo grade, & if the game works for them.

I like the sound of Fatalities/No Mercy moves coming back. Red Gacius does look bad ass.

I remember DH saying something about the joystick being available near the launch of KI, during the stream.

Also more KI impressions from event hubs, comparing the "shadow breakers" to SF3 parry. No surprise as the devs are huge fans of SF3. ( still the best Streetfighter game)

I am not a fan of SF3, at least the vanilla version. Never really play the 2 interation & 3rd strike. But I returned to SSF4, in the last 2 months and really enjoy it. But admittedly, I enjoy watching matches on youtube featuring players, than myself playing. I discovered how much better the online players are now. They probably play longer than me, to be fair (or at least I try to console myself). I thought I can do a killing after learning a few combos, but got kicked pretty hard.

Lag is also a constant problem on PC Windows live version for me, not helped that not that many people play in Germany, on PC at least, & often I have to play with people over 500miles away.

WIth delicated server, I hope KI will be a much better online experience. I am also happy, that KI combos are not as hard to pull off like some links (like those 1 frame links)combo in SSF4. They are unneccesary hard in my view. Make worst that I use Cammy, & especially with lag, a broken link will result in harsh reversal, as cannon drill is very punishable on block.

For me Third Strike was the pinnacle of the SF series. ( though i dislike what Capcom did to my former main, Sean in Third Strike. He was at his best in "Second Impact" )It also in my opinion had the best cast. It was nice that they added some SF3 guys into 4 but it just for the most part doesn't feel like they belong there, i was especially disappointed with what happened with Makoto.( though they supposedly fixed her in AE, i haven't played in a long while though)

As for KI with all the systems they have in place i am curious about their training mode, they have talked a bit about how thorough it will be. Looking forward to when they show it off, i will be spending quite a bit of time in it before i even think of getting online with this game.

Training Mode Video is up!

That is freaking sweet. I'm awful at these games and rarely try them but I can definitely see the Dojo mode getting me more likely to spend a little time on the game.

Yeah, the hitbox and replay stuff alone is worth the price of admission.

The training mode is pretty neat stuff that's for sure.

To be honest til now, I have no idea what auto double, auto, manual, Enders really means, or how combo breakers work. But at least I know I will be able to, via training mode.

To be honest, the amount of stuff you need to learn about fighting games from Internet is staggering. Without Internet, you may take days, weeks even months to discovered some mechanics by yourself.

@Flynn , what's your opinion of KI these days, you used to ridicule the idea of it being remade didn't you.

Eh, I never learned all the technical terms, I got good at fighters by just playing since I was a kid. I play with a friend who is always talking hit boxes etc. I'm like, whatever and proceed to destroy him.

Other than the MK series which I love to death, I've never been a fighting game fan but this game really has me hooked. I'll probably suck at it since I'm not good on these games. On MK I was decent but never got to play it online so wouldn't know, probably sucked. The training mode might help, this game is definitely different from MK so we'll see. Still everything I have seen from it has been great and they've shown improvement in every way since the X1 reveal which is good to see.
