Kotaku: Installing Xbox One games takes way too long

I get the feeling there is a lot of "waiting" on next gen consoles.

You know when you go out and buy a new game and want to go home and become immersed a.s.a.p.?

This seems like the opposite. I get annoyed with the constant downloads when you pop in a game you haven't played in a while. Hope they sort this stuff out!

Do people really think adding 24 hour DRM checks would magically make install times from the disc faster? The two things aren't at all related, it's mind boggling. It has to do with the blu-ray speed and how soon the initial data copied to the HD can be launched and played while the rest of it installs.

No, but it would help.
I don't know what the digital purchase install/play times are like btw, but this article is clearly about discs.

Which is still how the majority of people buy their games. The Kotaku articles states 'The only difference is that the installation from the disc doesn't seem to start until you've downloaded and installed the update.' So why does the xbox one need to download and install updates to play the game and the ps4 does not? That I think is the real question.

Bluray drives are snail slow unfortunately. Probably the main reason it failed to cath on in the pc world. I'm a half hour into a BF4 install on my laptop and just got to disk three.

I just wonder if the times have more to do with the required updates on the xbox one.

Whilst it's possible, it's unlikely they'd fake something this obvious and risk their credibility over this.
Yep. It's unlikely to be fake. It's too easy for them to be called on it. I read somewhere online last night that the difference in speed is because Microsoft have locked the Blu Ray disk speed in order to keep the console quieter. Sounds plausible (and silly) but I don't know if it's true.

The difference in speed is because the PS4 only loads the data needed to play the game when starting and then loads the rest in the background, the XB1 writes the entire game to disk before you can start playing.

I don't think that's right. Dead rising 3 was available for me to play at about 40% install. Fifa was available quicker than that but it only let's you play an exhibition match.

Incorrect.

I own Killzone for the PS4 and it took under a minute to install before playing while BF4 on the Xbox One took about 10 minutes before I could play.

I didn't really think too much of it at the time because I figured the games may have been much different sizes. But I guess it's a problem with the Xbox.

Well in that case the XB1 writes a lot more of the game to disk because the PS4 sure as hell isn't writing the entire thing.

I think it's the disk speed personally. My buddies with a ps4 tell it makes serious noise when the disk goes in the first time. I don't know if you have an x1but tthe thing is ninja quiet. Unless you can see it, you would never realise it's there. I'm thinking Microsoft locked it in some way as a design choice

I wasn't fond of the long load times on my PS3 and I'm not now with my X1.

MS would do some good if they sped up the drive, at least for installs.

someone correct me if I'm wrong but does the One not install the whole game while the Ps4 just installs part? It seems the issue is some of the fall out from MS dropping their DRM stuff and parts of that still effecting the OS.

If it was purely the disk speed then the XB1 wouldn't be able to play Bluray movies without getting far louder. They simply just have a worse play as you go system.

Why is that? The PS3 BD houses a 2x drive and when watching movies it runs quieter than the drive does when installing games.

The X1 has a 6x drive like the PS4 does, MS' drive is made by Lite-on yet has been slowed down purposefully to keep things quiet.

Where did you read about it being slowed down?.

I'm going to need to look for it but it's something mentioned after the Xbox One NAND was extracted, not allowed to talk about that stuff on the forums but I'll PM you a source when I find it.

It's believed MS decided to slow the Lite-on drive drip-feeding the data onto the drive so the majority of HDD bandwidth would still be available to the game.

??? this doesnt make any sense, the game should be able to use both bandwidth sources at the same time.

I have to wonder if they capped the speed of the Blu Ray drive because they were aware of reliability issues when running the drive at full screen.
