I still think this reception was a bit overblown but moot point now. I'm not sure if this enhances my point or makes it worse, but having gone through about 50 hours without finishing the game, I think it deserves another go. Andromeda 2, why not.

I filled out that survey. Too much of it was about multiplayer item packs. Otherwise I said the same thing I've been saying for awhile. Good game hampered massively by its technical issues and its lack of the "production value" of the conversations in past games. Especially on the ship, everyone does the same intro; slowly turn around and blip their invisible omni tool out. and then theres a bunch of other small things like the asari faces, how every salarians eyes are deep black, how messed up turian and krogan eyes get in conversations, the fish mouthiness of some characters... the list does go on. tiny things that really pile up.

So at its base it's a good game, but severely lacked polish. I'm kinda regurgitating the point though.

Maybe they failed to make the deadlines and it was becoming too expensive, maybe they got an unfair shake and weren't allowed more time. Either way it's back into cryo with it. Hopefully this hiatus won't last 600 years.
(complaints about lame jokes may be forwarded to my inbox)

lack of polish is a Bioware RPG trademark.

its issues stem from a whole new team taking over. It is a bit unreasonable to expect them to nail it first time. I also think the criticisms for tye game are way overblown. It was a fun game that lacked in some areas and shined in others, just like all games.

It's a shame we wont get a follow on. If Anthem releases and sees big sales and critical acclaim, I fear Mass Effect will be dead.

I would mostly agree. I'd say it was an ok game with severe lack of polish but we'd be splitting hairs. Speaking nothing of the padding with meaningless MMO style side quests and arguably weak writing/storytelling, there were far far more glitches and bugs in this game for what I expect from Bioware.

I've got a feeling you might be right on the money with this one. The conspiracy theorist in me feels like EA did this on purpose. They have the Star Wars IP with various divisions working on it ( Bioware with SW:TOR, Dice with Battlefront ) and Anthem coming out later on. That's arguably 2 big scifi IPs in their portfolio with 2 of them coming from the same studio. That may be 1 too many sci-fi IPs for EA's liking. So what do they do? They kill one off. Obviously the Star wars license is to valuable to kill so its not going anywhere. Anthem will give them a Destiny like competitor to compete in the games as a service realm. So Mass effect is the odd man out and let to die. So they give Mass Effect to a studio that's never shipped a full game. On top of that make them use an engine they are unfamiliar with and try for a scope unheard of in single player games. Sounds like a recipe for failure.

I hope Mass Effect makes a triumphant return and wows us with their next installment. But with Anthem right around the corner and a sneaking suspicion( Increase social media mentions) that Dragon age is right behind it, it could be another 3-5 years before we see Mass effect again.

If I am right, I hope that means we finally get a SWTOR sequal. I loved that game till it went F2P. Bring it to conoles too.

EA also have Respawn working on a new Star Wars game as well. So I think that's three Star Wars plus Anthem coming. Yeah, its easy to see how this might be the end of Mass Effect all right.

That would be a shame. Bioware used to put out great singleplayer RPGs. If Mass Effect dies, the only thing left is Dragon Age. Everything else is multiplayer GaaS stuff. Meh.

Agreed. And unless they turn things around for Dragon age, it may share Mass Effect's fate as well. It maybe time for some of those older Ips to make a return appearance. Jade Empire anyone?

A new Jade Empire would be a very welcome development.

Hell yeah, I'd love to see a new Jade Empire. One of my favorite games on the original Xbox.

They'll never do it, though. Even the old, SP-focused Bioware wouldn't do it. It only sold 300K, iirc, which I imagine is enough to make a little profit but not enough to command resources over their other, more lucrative projects. They'd tease it occasionally but never follow through.

And if the old Bioware wouldn't do it, the new Bioware definitely won't. If they did, they'd turn it into some endlessly monetized martial arts MMO-lite.

Maybe they'd do a remaster or better still, a remake? Doubt it, but it would be nice.

I dunno. If they could find a way to turn it into a clumsy third person shooter I'm sure they'd give it a go.

JE is part of the classic range but I'm not sure how many copies a game needed to sell to make that? 1M got Platinum.

Visceral Games is making one as well. That makes 4 Star Wars games from EA.

Jade Empire was the only Bioware game I've been able to tolerate. I wouldn't mind seeing what they could do with a sequel on current hardware.

BioWare Montreal Merging with Motive Studios

BioWare Montreal, the development team behind Mass Effect: Andromeda, is merging with Motive Studios.

The news was circulating for the past few days that Electronic Arts, the parent company of both studios, would go forward with a merger. Previous reports noted a statement made by CFO Blake Jorgensen during the quarterly EA conference call (transcript here), where he stated that the BioWare Montreal team and the EA Motive team are now in the same studio together.

“We’re building out a new studio in Montreal, as we’ve told everyone. And we’ve hired over 100 people into that studio that are brand-new to EA. This is to build the new IP around Jade Raymond’s team that she’s been building. I was in that studio last month. And it’s a wonderful new addition to our team. And we brought our BioWare Montreal team into that same facility. So they now all sit in one new studio together,” stated Jorgensen.

An official EA spokesperson informed us that the statement is indeed true, and the two teams will be merging.

“The teams in EA Worldwide Studios are packed with talent, and more than ever, we’re driving collaboration between studios on key projects. With multiple major projects in development in Montreal, we are merging BioWare Montreal with Motive Studios. This is an ongoing process, but there are many exciting roles and opportunities for everyone on the team.”

BioWare continues its work on new titles – including the highly-anticipated game, Anthem. What’s coming next for BioWare is very exciting, and we’re thrilled to have Casey Hudson returning to lead the studios in Edmonton and Austin.”

The news of the merger was previously hinted at from several other stories breaking over the past few months, including rumors that BioWare Montreal was “scaled down” after the release of Mass Effect: Andromeda. The game, which according to CEO Andrew Wilson “was a significant contributor” to third quarter sales, received mixed reviews from critics, with most of them heavily criticizing the game’s poor facial animations and graphical glitches. The rumors also noted that possible single-player DLC would be shelved for the game, which would instead only focus on multiplayer content at this time.

The official word of the merger between BioWare Montreal and Motive Studios may be another piece of evidence giving credence to that rumor, although BioWare has continued to patch Mass Effect: Andromeda since the release of the game. The most recent patch, which focuses on mostly multiplayer tweaks, was released today.

BioWare as a division of EA still has two major studios working on projects. BioWare Austin is headlining the ongoing support for the Star Wars: The Old Republic MMO, while BioWare Edmonton recently revealed their newest I.P, Anthem at E3 this year. Edmonton is also working on another title, which many speculate to be the next installment of the Dragon Age franchise. Recently, Casey Hudson returned to lead the studio as Aaron Flynn left.

Motive Studios is currently headed by Jade Raymond, who has been working on an unannounced Star Wars project for the past two years. The game, which has no official title, is described as a “Star Wars in the style of Uncharted.” Motive also has been working with DICE and Criterion on the upcoming Star Wars Battlefront II.

For a moment, that made me think this must be the Star Wars game Amy Hennig was involved with. But no, she's on the Visceral game -- which, btw, had a little info leaked recently:

https://www.vg247.com/2017/06/22/am...ween-new-hope-and-empire-strikes-back-rumour/

"EA previously said the project would have a “swashbuckling charm” to it, so we can at least expect something along the lines of Nathan Drake’s roguish hero type."

Sounds like each one is trying to claim the Uncharted aura for themselves.

I'll take 2 star wars adventure games over mass effect, sheeit.

That's a 200% increase from the usual, I am fine with that.

Sucks to see a franchise like Mass Effect go through this. It was the bread and butter for third party last gen on the 360. Oh well, i'm down for another Jade Empire as well. Never going to happen though.

Anybody play through this as a dick? I'm wondering about doing it that way. I got the idea from a guy at GAF who played Dragon Age this way. He said he played as a big, bald black dude who didn't give a f*ck (although he was a "scrawny white guy"), answered in the most obnoxious way possible, didn't read anything, told everyone with a stupid fetchquest to get lost, and basically was just in it for his own glory. Sounded fun.

I thought maybe that would spice things up, rather than just playing it straight.

Not sure how that would make any real difference. Dialogue options are too restricted and passive and consequdnces from dialogue choices are very limited.

Oh, so not many good snarky replies, huh? Too bad.

No more SP updates and no dlc confirmed :(

Since the release of Mass Effect™: Andromeda, we’ve worked hard to address feedback from our community. From improving animations to expanding customization options, we looked to respond to your concerns, and build on what you loved.

With each patch, you let us know we were heading in the right direction, and we're grateful to everyone who joined us on this journey. We're proud of what we created, and we hope you enjoyed it as well.

Early in development, we decided to focus Mass Effect: Andromeda’s story on the Pathfinder, the exploration of the Andromeda galaxy, and the conflict with the Archon. The game was designed to further expand on the Pathfinder’s journey through this new galaxy with story-based APEX multiplayer missions and we will continue to tell stories in the Andromeda Galaxy through our upcoming comics and novels, including the fate of the quarian ark.

Our last update, 1.10, was the final update for Mass Effect: Andromeda. There are no planned future patches for single-player or in-game story content.

In the coming weeks, our multiplayer team will provide details of their ongoing support and upcoming content, including new multiplayer missions, character kits, and what’s in store for N7 Day.

We appreciate all the millions of people who came with us to the Andromeda galaxy. We hope to see you again in the Mass Effect universe.

Yeah it's a terrible way for it to end. The missing arks were obviously meant to the DLC. Too bad the game tanked.

This is for the best. If they're not going to give the IP the talent and resources it needs to be great, then let it sit for a while.

Well I think, my personal opinion is, I think that the game... I usually don't do this, but this is one of those places where I feel like the game got criticised a little bit more than it deserved," [EA game green lighter Executive Vice President Patrick] Söderlund said. "I think the game is actually a great game. Yes, we have to acknowledge the fact that there were some things that maybe we could have done better, absolutely, but as a whole, if you go in and you buy the game today with everything that's in it today, I believe that that's a game worth buying, personally."

"So that's the first thing I'll say. The [second] thing I'll say is, for Mass Effect as a franchise, that has such a big fanbase, and you know I've seen people saying 'Oh, EA's not making another Mass Effect'. I see no reason why we shouldn't come back to Mass Effect. Why not? It's a spectacular universe, it's a loved [series], it has a big fanbase, and it's a game that has done a lot for EA and for BioWare.

"What we need to be careful though of is, whenever we bring Mass Effect back again, we have to make sure that we bring it back in a really [relevant] way, and in a fresh, exciting place. That' my job, and that's Casey's [Hudson] job, and BioWare and the Mass Effect team's job, to figure out what that looks like, and that we don't know yet, but we will."
