Microsoft Closes Redfall Developer Arkane Austin, HiFi Rush Developer Tango Gameworks, and More

And was probably also already well into development for PS5 prior to the acquisition. The PS5 was likely the lead platform.
Given how small of a team it was its not like that much would have been done. We also don't really know if they had anything else being worked on as the report was just that they were preparing to pitch a sequel. Regardless I think its a tough sell that a studio who released a game in 2022 and 2023 while not being a large studio was now loafing around.

If we assume Greenberg was BSing about them being happy with the game the talk of sales is valid but it ignores that this was Microsofts first opportunity to shape what games Tango would make. If Microsoft is capable of managing studios they should be able to find a way to get value out of a studio capable of making a game that good. Its not like they would be married to it having to be HiFi Rush 2.

My point is that we don't know what they were working on next, but MS did. I don't think it's all about MS being unhappy with HiFi Rush, which people are implicating.

Yeah but again this was their first opportunity to control what they did next. They didn't inherit their next game like they did the last two. They wouldn't really need to shut a studio down because they were unhappy with something extremely early in development as games get canned early all the time.

Microsoft just stinks at managing studios and now they have the added problem growing way too large and their game pass bet seemingly not really paying like they needed.

Brad, an ex MS/EA guy, gives his thoughts on the closures implying how Gamepass cuts into sales and MS needs to weigh losing potential revenue vs Gamepass sub expectations of day 1. Says that because of these huge acquisitions from past couple years, what worked before with the numbers isn't anymore due to growth stagnation and they need to make that $70 billion back or cut expenses further to balance. The revenue they are getting now isn't keeping up with the costs to make the games.

I love the "laughing" reactions to common sense, shows what children some people can be when it comes to gaming.

COD going on GP won't cause growth in a real way as most people who own a Series console who play COD likely already are GP members to begin with because you need to be to play online. That would be throwing hundreds of millions of dollars away for no reason. People aren't going to sell their PlayStations or buy an xbox just to give MS over $200 a year to play COD for "Free" lol

Absolute nonsense. Just ask Sony how that philosophy is working out for them financially.

Investing in their first party games has helped pay dividends even with inflated cost expenses. They need to manage their costs a bit better as they can't have every game cost 300 million to make. Which is why we may see them mix in some smaller AA style or shorter games in between the heavy hitters.

So all rosy then?

Not always as they had to shutter London studio and remake Japan into Team Asobi. Sony has always invested into their bread and butter though and never diverged out until they started dabbing in live service games. We will see how that goes but Helldivers 2 is a good start. Concord is supposedly coming out later this year.

I told you to stop drinking Tylenol.

I think what many of us, myself included, took for granted that MS is not an endless pile of money for Xbox. The assumption was that because they are a trillion dollar company that they would be OK with funding Xbox at a loss or single digit profit margins. And that seemed to be the case for a while. But I truly think the ABK purchase was the turning point on that line of thought. With that purchase and the fact that Gaming, of all things, is now Microsoft's 4rd largest business behind their Server business, Office business and Windows respectively, the shareholders, board and CEO have got to be keen to take a closer look at the business of xbox. Wouldn't surprise me if so execs were under the microscope. Same thing happened after the PS3 launch for those of you remember that. After the launch and disastrous performance, then Sony CEO Howard Stringer cleaned house.

(ex) Tango is really salty about the closure...
