VR confirmed today. If theres one type of hand that accels over traditional monitors/tvs, its cockpit style VR games. Its literally head and shoulders above a monitor. I'll be there the first day can play it in VR. It went from a maybe, to hell yeah.

would the drawback be reaching for buttons?

Looks like the NDA is lifted so we're getting a lot more outside videos. Game is still in private beta.

The big downside seems to be that the console version still sounds like it is a long way off.

This guy is playing and showing off the fps and I must say that fps in the 30s on lower end PCs is not bad at all. The old game could barely hit 30s on a top tier rig. I'm betting they have really done something with this rendering engine.

This guy has it running on a high end rig, but it isn't like this is crazy specs. I can't wait to see what it does on my 3 year old 1080. Based on what I'm seeing, the game should be very playable at medium settings and maybe even a little more.

Digital Foundry has a video up, but it isn't their usual deep dive yet

Chasing Storm Isaias in Microsoft Flight Simulator

Sometimes it's fine to just talk about the weather. The past couple of days a friend has been telling me, over one of the WhatsApp groups that's kept me sane the past few months, about the storm that's been hitting his part of the world. Storm Isaias hit the Carolinas earlier this week before tearing a path up through Virginia, New Jersey and the east coast of America. It's a ferocious thing, leaving millions without power - it left my friend in Connecticut in the dark - and sadly much worse, claiming lives on its way. I was curious to see it up close, from the safety of my own home, via the new Microsoft Flight Simulator.

Real-time weather - or as close to real-time as you can reasonably get - is a key feature here, with data being pulled in from Meteoblue, where observations are combined with complex predictions to get something approaching accuracy. I'm no meteorologist, so I can't speak precisely to its authenticity - and I'm afraid my own methodology when exploring how accurate it is isn't particularly scientific. All I know is that when I went to check the progress of Isaias on smart weather visualization site Windy and tabbed back into Microsoft Flight Sim, it was close enough to not be bothered by the difference.

So I set off at first from Richmond International Airport, heading north into the tail-end of Isaias. And it is, as you expect, absolutely miserable, with next-to-no visibility. I'm still a relative newcomer to this flight sim lark, so while I should be beholden to instrument flight rules and use the intricate array of dials and software to guide me I simply head straight into the murk to get a feel for what it's like flying in such extreme conditions.

An aerobatic machine like the Extra 330LT makes light of it all, the Cessna 172 gets churned up in the cloud cover while a short trip in a Daher TBM 940 just makes me grateful that I'm going to remain on terra firma for the foreseeable future as it dips and shears, often losing hundreds of feet at terrifying speed as it hits pockets of turbulence. It is, as it should be, not a particularly pleasant experience.

It's an effective way to get to grips with Microsoft Flight Sim's handling, though, as well as a decent way for the simulation to flex itself. What's impressive is how, even in all the gloom and grey of a sizeable storm, Microsoft Flight Simulator still looks absolutely splendid. On the runway the rain's almost falling sideways such is the wind, and it streams against the windows as we build speed down the runway. Its behaviour is even impacted by the prop as it whirls water out of its way.

The view from the ground in Connecticut - which thankfully only saw a mild example of Isaias' violence.

At low altitude you can just about make out pockets of Virginia, but it's in the heavens where the true spectacle can be found. Three and a half thousand feet up and you can break cloud cover at Isaias' tail, a small pocket of peace where you can see the storm whirl and flash away while you're up above and oblivious to its fury. It's one of what's now running into dozens of moments where Microsoft Flight Sim has made me catch my breath, letting me check in on the phenomenal conditions that are gripping the other side of the world. What a staggering thing this game is turning out to be.

I'm really pumped to try it on PC on the 18th. I'm thinking based on what I've seen that my older PC should be able to handle medium just fine, which is mind blowing.

The only thing that has me wondering a little is the flight dynamics. For all the info we're getting now, I've yet to see anyone talk about the flight modeling at all. The commercial jets look like they have way too little weight to them, but the GA stuff looks better. It looks like they fixed the "flying on rails" from the past, but now everything just seems to bounce around all the time. Hard to tell if that's accurate or not.

I wonder if it will be all looks but no personality. Although even a tweaked version of the old game should be decent for general aviation I would hope.

It's the same company that made it, and maybe it's just an evolution of what they already had, but improved physics? If that is the case, this Flight Sim has been used for real life training.

Yeah, and there's actually a switch to go back to the legacy model or the new one (presumably for compatibility with old addons), so they should be similar.

Most of the training on FS was with instruments and procedures, the flight model has always been lacking. There's just a lot of things that don't simulate well like crosswind landings and such.

I just found it odd that there's zero talk on it, seeing as they must have lifted the NDA as we can see countless videos. Even Youtubers I know who review Xplane 11 flight models aren't talking about flight dynamics here so far.

Still no release date for the Xboxen?

hey if it takes them a while to smooth out any rough edges or streamlineer it a bit I’m cool with that.

the one thing that irks me about the day and day releases for ms titles on Xbox and pc is that the pc version always seems to have lots of issues. If I was a pc gamer I’d rather wait for the games like forza horizon 4 to be released later with little to no bugs as possible....at least less then what they current do

No, they've been super quiet other than to still say it is coming at some point.

Although they sort of dropped the PC version without much warning. We were basically expecting fall/winter for PC but then they suddenly were in beta and then launching this month.

It was weird that they left this game completely off their Xbox show. Everyone is looking for games with amazing graphics and we have this. MS sometimes...

At this point anything is possible. I could see it dropping in the fall or not until next year.

That's due to the open ended architecture of the PC. Last generation, I had very few (if any) problems with games purchased on the PC.

I notice their GamePass app on PC is very buggy (granted it is beta). I struggled to even get Halo installed which was not fun. I have to uninstall the whole MCC and reinstall just to get it to update. I don't get many crashes once I get the games running though.
