Mixer being Shut down

Didn't MS say they were going to assist in moving over the existing partner accounts (like Ninja) to Facebook gaming?
but what if their subscribers hate Facebook?

Good for them. Stupid of Microsoft to toss tens of millions of dollars away on these guys. Money could have gone towards more games. I wonder how much money in total they lost with streamer contracts. I bet it is over $100 million.

Is Nervusbreakdown on suicide watch?

BTW, why is Nervusbreakdown11 a user name here?
I'm not 🤣🤣🤣
Been very busy working.

Now far as mixer goes, I really like the platform but how ever it didn't go far enough and also this gen with its bad rap did also kill the platform with no issue.

I will do the wait and see approach on how they do facebook gaming.

Otherwise so far it will be only twitch. I don't like streaming on YouTube because they are so many issues where my stream is always getting claimed by people from Asia.

If those people transition over to Facebook Gaming en masse, they automatically have reach to 3x the audience size. With all of the stuff they've done to try and attract people to the Mixer platform, it barely grew year over year, like embarrassingly low levels even when bringing on all of those big name streamers.

This has little to do with intergrating Facebook inside of the Xbox. It is about putting a click to play button in front of millions of potential IG and Facebook users for Xcloud. Microsoft could not do that kind of deal with Twtich or Youtube because of the competing (or rumored) game streaming services on those platforms.

they did once push twitch before what ever name mixer was once, it’s name escapes me atm... YouTube already has stadia and google play pass.

Again with this move Microsoft basically says they don't how you stream games from the console. When Microsoft closed down Grove streaming they announced a similar deal with Spotify. There is no big integration into the dashboard for Spotify.

A couple of unrelated, yet somehow potentially related news bits happened today:

I've been saying for a while now that there is more to an Oculus/ Xbox partnership than we have seen the results of thus far.

What we have here, is Facebook/Oculus is getting serious about gaming. They made a deal with Microsoft for use of xCloud services, and Microsoft gets a Mixer replacement in the form of Facebook Gaming (video) streaming service. Facebook/Oculus also just bought Ready at Dawn Studios, who has actually been rumored to be a Microsoft purchase for the past year or so...

This is big news to me, as I think this has underlying Oculus partnership overtones, as Facebook owns Oculus.

So I didn't see any posts for either story when I posted this. Mods can do away with it if you want. Still, nobody seems to be considering there's definitely an Oculus side to one, and maybe even both of these stories.

Originally this news made me throw up in my mouth a little bit because I despise Facebook. Further details:

  • Microsoft keeps the low latency Mixer tech
  • The streamers are free agents
  • Facebook gains the brand name
  • There is no direct connection from Xbox to Facebook/Mixer unless they offer an app in the future

Disappointed for those Mixer streamers who had built anything. Hopefully there's a way that makes it easy for them to bring their audiences to Twitch. What it means for Xbox is that they are out of the influencer business. There's also a good chance that sometime in the future, when you get those gaming adds in your Facebook or Instagram feed, there will be an option to launch the game through Xcloud. Klobrille did a good job illustrating what that might look like.

Question from someone who never streamed and never watch streamers;
Why would anyone start watching another platform? Are there things twitch doesn't do/do good enough?
Seems stupid to go up against the leader without any new features or tech, no? Just look at that Jay-Z abomination when trying to go up against spotify.

I did.

I did.

You did, and I missed it.

I personally have no love for Facebook, and I have stopped using the app, and probably won't start until next year or so. However, I do love my Oculus Quest so far. I've been really excited about a potential partnership for a while now, so this news of them having a gaming relationship with Xbox is very promising!

The quest is selling like Hotcakes and this could pull in the several million quest owners to Xbox if true with the ability to link to Xbox.
And they are doing it with PC now officially over any single USC-C cable. I think this is pretty amazing. Of course, people are using Virtual Desktop to go wireless. It would be cool if they could get the same performance wirelessly through Xbox, but they could also just say wired support for Quest, and wireless support for Quest 2, which I would expect to be announced before Xbox would announce compatibility anyway.

I knew this would be the first thing to enter our heads haha. Not a fan of Facebook myself but I’m happy they’re in the VR space so they can put some of their mountains off cash pushing VR forward.

This deal with Facebook could be huge for Xbox X cloud and Gamepass. We knew this was coming with Amazon and Google entering the fray with streaming so MS will be able to put X Cloud in front of over a billion people with Facebook and Instagram. More Gamepass/X Cloud subs means more money for games we can all enjoy. Love how some tried to jump on this as a negative when in actual fact this is great news for Xbox gamers.
MS are always ahead of the curve, amazing how many people buying the PS5 are going for the "always online" digital version lol.

Mixer was baked into the Xbox dashboard and broadcasting your stream was made easy. There was very low latency which is really nice. You got some mixpot rewards watching Xbox events, like games. Aside from the convenience and low lag, less competition from other streamers than on Twitch there was no reason to prefer Mixer.

If you don't have an Xbox you stream on Twitch, because that's where every other gamer is.

I remember being able to listen to your own Groove stations into games like Forza Horizon (might have been 3). Was really cool and was disappointing that they don't really support that kind of thing anymore.

It stinks because I think people see MS and think "MS sux lol" and ignores when they actually have good tools. Plus, you hate MS, well have fun with Facebook.

I genuinely enjoyed watching Mixer at work, and I like the web interface so much more than twitch's. IDK if I'll watch twitch as much, but I'm gonna miss Mixer a lot.

The problem with Mixer is that even though it allows other platforms to stream on it, it is forever Xbox focused; the amount of PS/Nintendo streamers are a minority, most PC streamers are not there. It was never going to get a PlayStation app to stream or anything like that, so having an almost purely Xbox from the offset limited it's scope for growth.

Sony, with an even bigger console userbase, figured this out yearsssss ago and cancelled their UStream service in favor of Twitch; it just took MS longer to do it and for what they have on their pipeline, youtube gaming/twitch is probably a non-starter if they're looking to do similar functionality to what Stadia has in the pipeline with one-click playing on streams/ads.

Whatever the case, you can't say they didn't try... but year over year growth at like .02% is a pretty blatant sign that things were no longer expanding without doing some even more dramatic than the already ridiculously dramatic moves they made this year and last year.
