Zenimax Media/Bethesda

This guy is late AF on these bullet points as to why these games stay exclusive. I and many others saw this from the gate. Especially after Amazon announced. These games are a lock on the Xbox platform. This is also why Sony's not going to try and grab a publisher into the Frey, as soon as they do they begin a bidding war and they simply don't have the capital to go against the big 3. They'll probably keep trying to lock down temp exclusives though.

But, if they Microsoft comes out with one more huge acquisition like Bethesda, I suspect that'll end, full stop.

good read that. I actually was in the same position. Initially I thought there is no way they will go exclusive with the likes of Elder Scrolls considering how many units it would ship on PlayStation. But now I’m not so sure.

Yeah Tassi's waffling mirrored my own. People who tend to know stuff believe the games will be exclusive. While plans can change, I believe that's the plan right now. Nadella doesn't talk about consoles. He talks about Netflix of gaming. Phil talks about the ecosystem. Selling games on Playstation doesn't create engagement in the ecosystem. By the time ES6 releases, streaming will be a viable method of playing games for Playstation only gamers. Microsoft has created many options for gamers who buy Playstations:
  • Buy a cheaper Series S
  • Get console and all their games for All Access fee ($25 or $35 a month)
  • Play on PC for $10 a month
  • Play on Xcloud for $15 (and Playstation gamers can even use their PS controllers)
Xcloud is the biggest factor. Orion tech, Series X APUs in Xcloud, improving internet latency/bandwidth and apps on TV will make streaming a viable 2nd complimentary way for Playstation gamers to play these games. Microsoft would rather have gamers engage them that way than buy the game full price for $70 on PS5. At some point in the future when streaming is mainstream, maybe Playstation consoles become like Steam where Microsoft decides there's no other way to make money from those customers than put the games on the system. We won't be there for a few years though.

"I am biting my tongue. They have revealed to me one of the two studios that Microsoft has bought and has not announced yet. He has been a studio worker himself and I can't say more. But I give you my word that when it is announced, many may freak out more than Bethesda."

Maaaaan! I dont know, I dont know if I could take a huge investment like that again, Ill find a way though.

If they're negotiating with a publicly held company, they'll have to reveal the purchase before the deal is done. Those types of deals cannot get held back for a show. They'll come out as soon as both parties agree. That said, who knows a this point? Rumors indicate they could still add another publisher before it's all done which I think sounds crazy. Since Nadella spoke on it and said they'll add more, that gives credence that there's something in the works that isn't cheap. AA studios don't register as more than lunch money to Microsoft. I've heard they tried with Capcom before Bethesda....but again that seems a bit crazy at this point. I think a Japanese publisher getting pulled off of Playstation would be a hard sell to the employees of those companies. Just my hot take.

They want to establish mindshare in Europe (beyond the UK) and Japan. Not about selling Xbox's. About selling Game Pass over Xcloud. Some markets have better internet than the US. I predict something not cheap happening in Poland soon. Something big or small will happen in Japan this fiscal year.

Either way, Nadella isn't worried about dropping bombshells at this point. He's got an eye on the roadmap, making Game Pass the Netflix of gaming and making cutting off Amazon, Tencent and Google.

On one hand, this could easily be bulls***. Could be a safe guess. Based on Nadella's recent comment, there's more to come so it can also be an educated guess disguised as insider info.

That said, multiple people who said Microsoft was going after multiple publishers last year (which included Capcom) are saying there will be another publisher. It doesn't mean they will get any of them of course. Every publisher left is a publicly owned corporation so no deal will get finalized without the entire public knowing before the offer is finally accepted.

Microsoft as a corporation has been given directive to find long term investments with their cash on hand this fiscal year. With Tik-Tok falling through and Nadella seeing a great long term future in gaming, I don't think the question is whether they have enough studios to compete. There's an economies of scale factor when they keep acquiring tech and are able to share with each other. I believe they're looking for IP though. Not just studios. IP can be leveraged outside of gaming.

I hear there's two more acquisitions coming. I do hope we see some Ip gains though. Why on Earth they've never tried to buy Splinter Cell is the 8th wonder of the world.

Rumor is that two are finalized that they are holding for announcement. If that turns out to be true, those would be privately held businesses which would mean more announcements will happen before their fiscal year in June 2021 is up. I believe they'll have around 30 studios by June 2021. Satya's comments indicate some bigger things are in the works which likely means acquiring a publicly held company...or two. Just an educated prediction.

All my predictions are based off of reading comments from investor meetings and Nadella. Trying to figure out where gaming is within the scope of Microsoft's future. I believe Microsoft is serious about making gaming an actual pillar...as crazy as that might sound. Which is why the Bethesda deal isn't so crazy. Neither would another publisher. They have so much money and are looking ways to improve their reach socially. That's why Tik-Tok was a thing. They aren't nickel and diming gaming. Netflix's investment yearly is much higher than Microsoft's on content and Nadella truly believes in establishing that kind of reach. He's also close the guy who runs Netflix and learned a lot sitting on the board before Microsoft. A lot of people in the mainstream media will start yelling at Microsoft for all their buyouts soon...is my 2nd prediction.

If random people on Twitter pay attention to Nadella, it's a safe educated bet that they're negotiating right now.

But that means they don't know anything more than you do. If some random on Twitter says they bought someone they are BSing. They know nothing.
