New York's City Council has approved extending the city's strict smoking ban to include electronic cigarettes, which emit a vapor.

The measure was pushed by outgoing Mayor Michael Bloomberg and backed by public health advocates in the city. It comes just weeks after New York became the first major city to raise the age for buying tobacco to 21.

Earlier this month, New York City Health Commissioner Thomas Farley said that "more research is needed on electronic cigarettes," but that "waiting to act could jeopardize the progress we have made over the last few years."

Reuters describes e-cigarettes as "slim, reusable metal tubes that contain nicotine-laced liquid in a variety of exotic flavors such as bubble gum and bacon."

Bloomberg is insane. I don't vape in the same places I didn't smoke, because I think it's disrespectful. I'm pretty sure most vapers are like that, like a law is going to stop a******s who would blow smoke/vape clouds into your face anyway.

The point of the ban in the first place should be that cigarettes are a nuisance to everyone that doesn't smoke. E-cigarettes aren't.

But I guess in NYC their smoking ban is some nanny state law.

People violate the s*** out of these laws and it sucks.. grown men and women standing right next to no smoking signs. Just one person can make an entire entryway to a business stink.. I was at a mall the other day, enjoying some fresh air in their courtyard which is pretty damn big.. suddenly smelled nasty cig smoke. It was ONE guy.. sitting on a bench right next to a no smoking sign. Maybe a 40 year old dude.. entire courtyard reeked of that poison. Went in to Starbucks where my girl was getting something for like 5 minutes.. came back outside, guy was gone but it still stunk.

What a nasty habit for nasty people.. cigarette of course thrown on the ground, as if littering is totally cool, for cigarette smokers.

My set up, vaping Ice Tart at the moment... it tastes like cough drops. The Kanger Protank that I'm not using because I can't get it to not leak is filled with this crappy lime margarita flavor. Can't wait to get some good juice, my buddy hooked me up with all his that he didn't like... so I got awesome flavors like hotdog! Gross lol

Just flat out stupid, lets outlaw something that causes no harm because we think we are making the world a better place even though we have no research to support our opinion.

The land of the stop and frisk, keep it classy....

They ran this through not based on any evidence of anything, but because this city council and its speaker are on the way out. Banned Styrofoam cups too.

I've never smoked and never wanted to, unfortunately I grew up with smokers in the house so when I get sick I have a smokers cough and it sucks lol. I'm all for banning smoking in public places but E cigs? that's going too far.

What I don't understand is this: Of all things, why smoke? The most common reason I've been hearing is because of "stress." Really, I'm sure there are ton of different ways to relax your stress-level more safely: How about drawing? Writing (journal)? Playing sports? Workout? Talking with friends? Listening to music? Driving around? Playing video game? MUCH MUCH more!!!!!!

The hilarious thing is that nicotine is a stimulant.

It's like claiming you drink coffee to relive stress.

The only "stress" being relieved is the stress of addiction.

I'll never understand it either. And it's so expensive.

Bloomberg should promote the E-cigs since they are a tobacco free, smokeless alternative to Cigarettes.

I never got into smokes. Waste of time, money and it reeks. Some guys smoke outside at work or they take a puff in their car when it's too cold to stand outside. When they come in a big waft of fumes may follow them in stinking up the place. Or when I drive people at lunch, some are smokers. They don't even smoke in the car, but their jacket alone is enough to make my car smell like smoke.

Also, the money is insane. A pack of cigarettes (small pack) is about $10 here I think. So one pack a day is about $3,500 a year. LOL. Working backwards, that's like $5,000 pre-tax salary just on huffing and puffing. Of course people can buy cartons to make it cheaper, but it's still a big spend.

Then again the government doesn't seem to mind raking in the tax money. In Canada, approximately two-thirds of the price of cigarettes is tax revenue. Knowing how greedy the gov't is, I'm surprised they actually have anti-smoking campaigns.

I've never smoked either, but I know a lot of people who do. While I agree with policy that encourages quitting, I still think smokers get treated like crap. Some non-smokers have even developed extremely negative attitudes towards them. For example:

What a nasty habit for nasty people.

Nevertheless, I don't see why E-Cigs are getting banned. My parents us them and they've never bothered me. Bloomberg seems to be quite the authoritarian.

E-cigarettes may not have the same nuisances as regular ones, but a point of banning is also just the act of doing it. Imagine if smokers were allowed to do e-cigs at work or public places like the old days. It wouldn't smell bad, nor would there be butts around, but just the nature of it of people doing it at their desk or in a restaurant just doesn't look good. And who wants some guy vaping in your face?

E-cigs may help some people kick the habit, but for young people it's just a marketing ploy in hopes some people "grow up to the real stuff". Teen smoking is at a low point.

Also, banning e-cigs makes it easy. Because all it takes is some e-cig makers to make one that is half and half or something stupid and then it's another round of law making and walking a fine line. So there's no confusion between the premise and the person.

There's numerous reason why smoking is bad. For both the smoker and the non-smoker.

As a non-smoker, why should my tax dollars be funneled to health care costs because some guy wants to smoke a roll of tobacco? Why should I be in a meeting with you at work and now your sweater is stinking up the room because you were huffing during your usual 10 am smoking break? I have no problem driving you around somewhere, but yeah, I sure like how my car now smells like you. I enjoy airing out the car and spraying air freshener. Or how some of them are pulling out their butt and lighter and just about to light up, while softly asking if they can light up in the car. An empty request as the person is already in motion to do it anyway. Yeah, as if rolling down the window actually completely works.

If someone wants to smoke, go ahead but do it at home or in your backyard.

The problem with smokers is that many don't give a crap. They are probably used to the smell and their closet of clothes and car smelling no different, but the chances of a smoker not somehow fuming their scent on you is slim. If they put so much effort and money into smokes, sure;y they can put just as much effort into hiding the smell or airing themselves out first.

I quit 2.5 years ago using the patch. This ban is bs. I understand curbing laws for people to quit but at some point there needs to be a compromise to protect their freedoms. If I wanna walk down the street and blow bubbles then I will goddammit. Ecigs aren not a scientific anomaly. Pretty basic chemistry and shame on this douche for banning them.

Is it about protecting the rights of others? Or is it just about control at this point?
