New York City Extends Smoking Ban To E-Cigarettes

What I don't understand is this: Of all things, why smoke? The most common reason I've been hearing is because of "stress." Really, I'm sure there are ton of different ways to relax your stress-level more safely: How about drawing? Writing (journal)? Playing sports? Workout? Talking with friends? Listening to music? Driving around? Playing video game? MUCH MUCH more!!!!!!

Now there is little reason to, but there was a time when people thought that smoking was good for you and professional athlete's promoted them. We also thought the earth was flat. We aren't always the brightest species even though we are all precious and unique snowflakes.

Uh... vaping isn't smoking... you guys get that right? It's an alternative and personally is helping me quit.

Good luck man, I know how tough it can be. And you are 100% correct, it isn't smoking.

Is it about protecting the rights of others? Or is it just about control at this point?

Being that it is based on no long term study and was not based on any evidence or facts, I am going to have to say control.

I find it hard to believe anyone would think smoking is good for you. That's just an excuse to make cig companies the bad guy. It's like suing a knife company if someone stabs themself. People have to take blame.

When in life has anyone said breathing in dirty smoky fumes is good for you? When people are kids, the first thing they tell you when there's a fire is to get out of the house and cover your nose so you don't inhale the fumes. When cooking and something gets charred, nobody says put your nose above the burning food and inhale that dark smoke.

But when it comes to shoving tobacco in your mouth, lighting it up, sucking it in for hours every day it's somehow good for you?

People have to have common sense.

Cigarettes were marketed that way and there was a ton of science from the smoking industry that said as much. There was a systematic campaign pushed by the tobacco industry to willfully deceive the American public. That was why I said there was a time. It is really nothing like suing a knife company for someone being stabbed. No knife company that I know of willfully marketed to deceive their customers about the ill effects of their product.

And if we are so concerned about dirty fumes why are we only SO concerned with half measures like smoking? Why not go after the bigger culprits -- if we are so concerned?

I've never smoked either, but I know a lot of people who do. While I agree with policy that encourages quitting, I still think smokers get treated like crap. Some non-smokers have even developed extremely negative attitudes towards them. For example:

I consider having to walk through someone's poison smoke being "treated like crap" personally. People violating laws that were passed by the people of the State (all of our smoking bans come from votes from the public) is poor treatment of society.

Calling something that is nasty, nasty.. is treating people poorly? Boo hoo I expect you not to make an entire outdoor courtyard stink like acrid poison? I expect to be able to walk into a restaurant and not have my eyes and lungs poisoned by someone elses drug addiction? That's treating people poorly?

And I expect people not to litter as well. When was the last time any of you saw a smoker with an ash try full of cigs in their car? Haven't seen that since the 80's probably.. every single smoker throws them out their window. And since smoking is illegal all over the place here.. and they removed ash trays, expecting people to follow the law.. they just throw their cigarettes on the ground.

Not that an ash tray even stops them from doing that. Where there are ash trays you still see butts all over the ground.. I WATCHED 2 people in the last year toss cigarettes on the ground near an ash tray. More than once I've said "you've dropped something".. they look at me like I'm crazy.. like I'M the a****** for pointing out that they just committed multiple crimes and acted like a disgusting person.

Addictions make people feel entitled.. it makes them nasty people.. let alone just how putrid and nasty the habit itself is. Thanks for making yourself smell like s***, guy on the elevator.

Nevertheless, I don't see why E-Cigs are getting banned. My parents us them and they've never bothered me. Bloomberg seems to be quite the authoritarian.

I agree. E-cigs pretty much bother no-one.. they also don't produce constant litter.

I pretty much only vape by now, but i always feel unconformable vaping indoors anyways, or in a closed non smoking bar, so i just stick to the smokers.

I really don't care if people want to vape indoors. It's a small usually pleasantly scented odor. And they are generally very benign smells.. like cooking something sweet.

People with incredibly strong perfumes and colognes are far more a nuisance than vapers.

I go with whatever the venue says, if we can't vape indoors I'll happily do it outside with the smokers.

Holy smurfy!! Just when I entered this thread, all of suddenly I'm seeing ad about smoking! My PC is stalking me!

You have to be like 15 or younger. They didn't target me as a kid as much as they would have liked, but it was still a major deal, s*** I remember Joe Camel.
