You mean across the net? The PS4 was supposed to save us all from the tyranny of Microsoft and the Xbox One. It didn't. This proves that right now the Xbox brand is still the most popular in the world.

I told you all Sony was holding back shipments of the PS4 to cause more demand and it's going to backfire. Looks like the One has been selling just fine.

How is the Xbox brand the most popular in the world if the PS4 already has a 1.2 million console lead (and is still in the lead in the U.S.).

Why can't people just say....'wow...impressive numbers! Congrats Microsoft'

instead we get the defenders of the plastic corp.
This is for both sides....jeezz...give it a rest guys.

Because the PS4 has been released in more countries than the Xbox One has. The PS4 has a cheaper price tag and it's been on the market for a week longer. Not only that but Microsoft had all the negative PR coming into this gen and yet the Xbox One still outsold the PS4 in the most important month of the year. That's flat out impressive.

Looks like X1 sold more units in December in the US than PS4 as many of us thought it would since Sony was so much more ambitious with their global launch strategy.

Hardware:

Xbox One: 908K [Best selling next-gen console]
Xbox 360: 643K (-54.1%) [Best selling current-gen console]

Notes:
-Sony says they're still in the lead with PS4 when you add up sales of both systems over the two months.
-Nintendo's statement a few days ago would imply that the 3DS is somewhere near 1 million units, but we don't have an exact figure yet.
-The 3DS was the best selling system of both December and 2013.
-This was the Wii U's best month meaning it's above 460K. I'm unsure how Microsoft classes its generation to give us a ceiling.
-Aquamarine has provided a contextualized GameCube and Wii December NPD results post here for the interested (worst GameCube December was 573K near launch, worst Wii December prior to Wii U was 604K near launch): http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showpost...&postcount=407

Hell yes it is! I gotta say...

Taken from GAF. But avoid the tons of posts there if possible. It's a complete shytstorm there.

Impressive, Xbox One and 360 retail spend was 50% of the industry.

Additionally, Xbox 360 continued to see strong momentum with 643,000 units sold in December, putting it in the number three spot overall, and lead for last generation hardware. Together, Xbox One and Xbox 360 held 46 percent of the hardware market share in the U.S. and showed a 10 percent year over year growth from December 2012.

“We’re grateful for the excitement and support of our fans – many purchasing their next Xbox console and many joining the Xbox family for the first time,” said Yusuf Mehdi, corporate vice president of marketing, strategy and business for Xbox. “Our journey is just starting, with more innovation, games and entertainment coming in 2014 and far beyond.”

December 2013 NPD highlights include:

Total combined retail spend on the Xbox platform (Xbox One and Xbox 360) in December reached $1.39 billion, 50 percent of the combined software, hardware and accessories spend in the U.S. (Source: NPD Group, December 2013).

During the month of December, Xbox One held six of the top 10 spots on the new generation console game title list: “Battlefield 4,” “Forza Motorsport 5,” “Dead Rising 3,” “Ryse: Son of Rome,” “Madden NFL 25” and “Call of Duty: Ghosts” (Source: NPD Group, December 2013).

Fans continue to show their excitement for new generation Xbox One games, with U.S. consumers purchasing an average of 2.9 games* per console since launch.

As Mehdi mentioned last week in a thank you letter to fans, 2013 was an incredible year for gamers, entertainment fans, our industry and Xbox. You can read his full letter here.

Doing some NPD math....

X1 Nov 909k + Dec 908k = 1.82M

Since MS said 360 was third at 643k and Sony said the cumulative sales of Nov + Dec are more than X1, then PS4 Dec is about 800k (give or take maybe 50k)

PS4 Nov 1.1M (est. from GAF) + Dec at about 800k = 1.9M.

Well, I give Sony's PR team credit for innovative PR. Not too often you'll see a company say during a monthly NPD that "last month + this month = more than competitor X". And I thought today's NPD was focused on Dec, not Nov. LOL

So though PS4 is still leading US NPD but perhaps 100k, that ratio sure is 3:1. The ballpark estimate is PS4 at 1.9M and X1 at 1.8M.

Feel free to display the ratio 1.9 : 1.8. Or using integers 19 : 18.

Just as I said many times, despite the ratio wars and PS4 at 4.2M, when comparing both systems using a more apples to apples comparison, the sales are much closer than people think. All the "X1 has tons of skids of stock lying around" has been an excuse that has popped up in January. So for Nov and Dec where both systems were hard to find, the sales are pretty much equal in the US. And that's with PS4 having an extra week and at a $100 cheaper pice.

Good job MS on apparently outselling Sony in NPD territories for December.

I still see this as a battle of "who can supply the most," though, which isn't all that telling.

Funny thing is that unlike generations of the past where one system may get cast aside from third parties, just about every dev will make their games for X1, PS4 and PC, while Wii U and handhelds are a different beast. So whether X1 or PS4 go on to sell more than the other by 5, 10, or 30 million they'll probably all get the third party same games at the end of the day. And unlike Sega which crash and burned, MS and Sony being the main consoles butting heads have enough resources to last any battle unlike Sega which simply ran out of finances.

The 3:1 ratio that PS fans came up with sure was hilarious. We've got a dog fight on our hands. Both the Xbox One and PS4 are selling great. All we know for sure right now is that the underdog Xbox One overcame the odds and beat out the mighty PS4 during the most important month of the year.

No doubt about it. 2014 will be a banner year for Microsoft and the Xbox One. With all those amazing exclusive titles coming to the One it's almost a given that Microsoft will pull away with the lead in worldwide sales. Especially after they release the X1 in as many countries as Sony has released the PS4 in. Throw in a price drop and it's over.

I have no doubt at all that Sony would have beaten MS in NA had they been able to provide more units. The fact that Sony is still ahead in the US as well as globally should keep the MS fanboy stuff from getting out of hand here. Don't forget the PS4 has a more than 1 million sales lead right now, it's sold more consoles in every country they are competing in than MS has (other than Australia which I have heard is again due to supply). People keep bringing up the week long head start Sony had, that was only in NA, the rest of the parts of the world they are competing in MS had a week head start..

Now Xbox fans are saying the console war is over.

But besides Australia there is not a single country where Xbox one is in the lead. How do you conclude it is the most popular brand in the world then.

Yup, so like we've said before, it's worth reminding ourselves that whoever wins doesn't really win anything significant, certainly not the death of their competitor (which wouldn't be a good thing anyway), just bragging rights.

I'm not I disagree that "the Xbox is the most popular brand in the world." You agree with him that it is?

I never said I agree with him.
It is pretty apparent which brand MAY be more popular ATM...either way the generation just started so why the f*** are either of you arguing which one is more popular??

Doing some additional math....

MS said X1 sold "over 3M" by the end of the year. With Nov/Dec US NPD at about 1.8M, that means the other 12 countries shared the remaining 1.2M.

Sony said PS4 sold 4.2M by year end. With Nov/Dec US NPD at about 1.9M, that means the other 47 countries shared the remaining 2.3M .

If you want a lesson in math, assumptions and accusations, everyone's favourite orange coloured gaming board has tons of people breaking out calculators trying to convince themselves MS' 3M sales claim is false.

The thread is going too fast to keep up. I gave up at around page 7 or 8.

Maybe you and the three others that agreed with you could point out all the xbox one sucks and isn't selling posts.:p
Your honestly going to write that people haven't been saying plenty of X1 on the shelves but no 4s, Because 4s sell out as soon as they get on the shelves:cool:, If ANYONE tries to make a different suggestion on why X1 are on the shelves the fanboy or some other turn is thrown at them. 2 you got one person who has even said sone games look better on a 4 than on a maxed out PC yeah villiance talking about you.
Maybe I have 3 people who agree because only 4 x1 owners that keep trying to make this a thread where discussion can be made.:D

kids prefer it 7:3... That's pretty popular don't ya think?

Well, I know I've seen my share of people taking a picture of Best Buy and showing a stack of X1's. So according to those 7 pictures I've seen, no doubt it's representative of the entire world and that those stacks of X1's (green boxes mind you) haven't sold. In fact, despite them being green boxes and not the black Day One Edition, the posters are confident they are from the same shipment back in November. I believe them.

Nothing tells the truth more than a cell phone pic.

LOL

I don't see anyone arguing. Just making observations given the facts that we have. Which brand is more popular is up in the air and doesn't matter anyway. Right now it looks like the Xbox brand is still the most popular but it's close. All i was pointing out is that with the deck stacked against them Microsoft came out on top this round like they always do.

They've been the underdog since 2001 when they launched the Xbox and they continue to stand in there and go toe to toe with the juggernaut Sony. It's impressive. Everyone had the 360 left for dead at the start of last gen. Now they've got the Xbox One dead on arrival and come to find out the Xbox One was the most popular console this Christmas. That's saying something and in my opinion it's a sign of things to come.
