Personally, I believe the pandemic seems to have accelerated the digital adoption for games as people can't really go out to buy physically. They can only order online and get it delivered or they could just purchase digitally and download.

My own game purchases have been about 50/50.

While just a few years ago the number of physical games sold greatly outweighed that of digital sales, the scales are quickly being rebalanced, with digital overtaking the market across all console manufacturers. Such is the case with Sony, who has reported that almost 63% of all PlayStation games sold in 2020 were digital.

As reported by Ars Technica, “nearly 63 percent of [Sony’s] ‘full game’ sales for the 2020 calendar year came via digital downloads rather than games sold on discs at retail”. For the sake of comparison, during the 2019 fiscal year, digital sales made up 55% of all software sold. Just one year earlier in 2018, much less than half of all sales were digital, landing at 43%.

While COVID-19 and the global pandemic led to many highstreet retailers closing in a number of countries, there were many other avenues which players could buy physical disks, such as e-commerce. Furthermore, as is evidenced by the data, this trend began way before COVID-19, and is likely to continue after the fact.

With the release of the PS5, Sony have manufactured a digital only PlayStation home console for the first time, alongside the disk-based version. It will be interesting to see how these figures continue to change as more people get their hands on PlayStation 5 consoles. Will the current generation of consoles be the last ones to use physical disks? We will have to wait and see, but the current trend seems to suggest this might be the case.

I wonder how many bought the digital Version by accident or simply cause it was the only version available and they didn't want to miss out on a new console

I would like to see sales when stock isn't as restricted anymore. That should be interesting.

Gamers definitely waiting to get a PS5 before buying the new titles to experience the next gen version.

Marvel's Spider-Man: Miles Morales PS5 PlayStation 5
Marvel's Spider-Man: Miles Morales has been a mainstay of the UK's boxed games chart for many weeks now, but it's never quite made it to the top. With the latest results, though, it's finally crawled up to the number one spot, presumably driven by the PS5 stock drip-feed the country has had lately.

The hardware availability has provided a boost to other PS5 games too. Assassin's Creed Valhalla sells best on Sony's new console in this week's chart and jumps up to eighth, while Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War continues to hold its ground at sixth. Watch Dogs Legion also sells a majority on PS5, and bounces back from number 27 to number 12. It's a similar story for Immortals Fenyx Rising, which moves up to 14th. Mortal Kombat 11 Ultimate re-enters the top 40 in 18th, with 90 per cent of sales going to the PS5 version.

UK Sales Charts: Week Ending 13th March 2021

Animal Crossing: New Horizons

Minecraft (Switch)
Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War
Grand Theft Auto V
Assassin's Creed Valhalla
Super Mario 3D All-Stars
Ring Fit Adventure

Take with a grain of salt since it's VGChartz but interesting nonetheless.

Sony taking the crown as the biggest video game company in the world with that revenue, wow.

Tencent's revenue is impressive considering that they aren't even selling any hardware at all.

6.5 million ps5s sold so far and counting. PS train keeps chugging along from last gen into this one.

While Microsoft will be more competitive next cycle, especially in the key battleground of continental Europe where the company lost ground during the Xbox One cycle, the PlayStation brand still resonates more strongly than Xbox outside of the US and UK markets where the situation is more balanced. This is unlikely to dramatically shift during the next cycle however strong Microsoft’s positioning is,” said Harding-Rolls.

According to the company’s current data, PlayStation held a considerable lead as of Q2 2020, with the installed base of PS4 (all versions) standing at 111m, Xbox One (all versions) at 51m and Nintendo Switch (all versions) 57m. “Sony has built a formidable global brand in PlayStation over the last 25 years,” he added.
