PlayStation 4 and Xbox One resolution discussion.

We're going to see a lot of flip flopping on stance regarding resolution in the next few weeks.

We really should just create a template that people can fill in with the importance of resolution and the current rumors.

Well, actually they are. I have a small problem with a review event when speaking on the actual hardware around launch time mate. If you dont thats fine. But I dont share your opinion.
Like Qbert said they have been pretty quiet.

There are hardly any true 1080p games on current gen, despite most of us have 1080p tvs. But nobody seemed to care or pressure devs for higher res. Instead, people cared more for texture quality or frames per second. I can't remember any post or thread begging devs to go 1080p on current gen.

Because they know it's not possible to have 1080p with a decent framerate and details on current hardware, so I don't know why you're using this as an excuse for the "next-gen" consoles not being to do it.

They're starting a new generation of consoles that's behind 3 year old PC tech and 5 years behind PC standards, it's as simple as that.

Kind of funny coming from the person who before all of this was pretty happy/confident/excited/loved reminding Sony fanboys that XBO would have more games at 1080p than PS4. Now suddenly resolution doesn't matter at all.

lol, yup.

New forum, same intellitroll.

True. But not only because people are butthurt. Because they will see that it doesn't really make a difference. A lot of these games that won't be doing 1080p resolution are still going to be great.

You'll know answers to certain resolution rumors before the 12th. That's not why embargoes are separate for Xbox one. Think harder eyeroll.

I slightly hope he was trolling all that time after all, but probably not. That sure isn;t very professional for a journalist.

I have no idea what to make of this?

f*** all Hazard!! Right. So Sony didnt SAY anything, you're right.

But the issue still stands however.... we'll see what happens soon enough.
We sure will and on the matter of resolution Sony has been pretty quiet.:p

I've come to my own conclusion about that issue: Whatever the resolution ordeal is, it has to do specifically with the devs, not the machines. Albert mentioned this a bit ago, that they had no idea what resolutions would be in 3rd party games as they leave that detail up to the devs themselves to make that sort of decision. Seems like a smart way to handle that.

I was just thinking the same thing. I guess great minds think a like.:)

I said they have been pretty quiet. You make it sound like Sony is constantly talking shat....they aren't. If anything, we know nothing right now BECAUSE there's been little official talk.

Probably one of the best unbiased breakdowns of console hardware, past and present, I've read from a developer's perspective. The writer does not speak directly to any next gen hardware numbers and instead gives an amazing insights into the development process.

Cormack is not the writer but they do speak about the meaning of his quote.

"It's almost amazing how close they are in capabilities, how common they are... And that the capabilities that they give are essentially the same." - John Carmack on the Xbox One and PS4

The key part in that statement is that they have similar capabilities. Not performance, but capabilities. I read that as Carmack acknowledging that the differences in power between the two are negligible when considering cross-platform development.

Overall I walked away with a new perspective and no cares about keeping up with this next gen hardware shouting match any longer. It just doesn't matter when comparing consoles. If you want to argue about a noticeable difference then upgrade your PC,

Although these GPUs are not as fast on paper as the top PC cards, we do get some benefit from being able to talk directly to the GPUs with ultra-quick interconnects. But in this console generation it appears that the CPUs haven't kept pace. While they are faster than the previous generation, they are not an order of magnitude faster, which means that we might have to make compromises again in the game design to maintain frame-rate.

A few things that are over looked in this whole thing is resolution isn't the only measurement of graphics. Yeah, it's a big part, but frame-rate and what's actually being rendered is an issue too. I'm sure they could easily hit 1080p/60 if they drop the poly count, use worse textures, shadows, anti-aliaising, physics simulations, characters on screen, weather effects, god rays fancy particle effects, image filters... the list goes on forever. The fact is they're trying to find the balance so they can get these games out of the door, and each developer would have a different judgement call on those type of things. One dev might take a lower res for a smooth 60fps, another might except more jaggies to hit a higher resolution.

A higher resolution means less need for AA and jaggies though. I'd much rather crank the resolution and drop AA if needed versus the opposite.

Overclocking my 780 way above Titan speeds has made me greedy, I want higher res and more AA/AF.

I have seen plenty of XB1 BF4 footage. I have not seen any PS4 footage.
