Predictions on the length of this console generation?

If vr does really catch on in 3-5 years, I could see that as a part of pushing a neXT gen console. But ya, I thino the current performance is good for most average gamers. As long as there are lots of explosions and dudebro moments, they'll be happy.

I really like the idea of VR but I really don't see it being picked up en masse. The headsets are going to take console from $400 on launch to maybe $650? And once that happens, you alienate all couch-socialising. Unless you're willing to splurge for another headset, and I really doubt with the power they are handing out at the moment, that you could play 2player off of one console next gen...

I really don't see vr, be it oculus, Sony's one, or ms's, as being anything near mainstream.

The price of VR headsets is going to be a massive stumbling block for mainstream adoption.

Even thiough I said 7-8 years, I already play most multiplat on my PC! My PS4 which bought with Dragon age launch, I only really play one game, Dragon age. Play a bit of Unity, but did not get far, but man, is it pretty. I will probably used it more as as a NETflixer & play exclusives mainly.

If streaming becomes the norm and the cloud stuff takes off, this may be the longest generation surpassing even last gen.

I say at least 5 years I mean sony needs the cash and the PS4 will get cheaper and cheaper to make so they can turn a bigger profit with it and MS well after the showing of One they may not be in a huge rush.

Price will go down though just like any other new tech.

Sure but I don't think the Morpheus launches for anything less than $300 and that would be a best case scenario. Plus it currently relies on another peripheral - Playstation Camera - to function. A peripheral for a peripheral for a console.

I don't think VR will ever really take off as a peripheral - it has to *be* the sole platform rather than extension of another. The market is going to be flooded with differing headsets and standards over the next couple of years and nearly all of them are destined to fail.

Morpheus can at least sort of make you look like you belong in a Daft Punk video.

VR will be a mere blip on this console generation. A cool novelty.

Will start to pick up steam on this gen. I think you may be looking 1-3 years, where I am thinking 5 - 10. As you pointed out though, not a lot of people will be able to experience VR due to the price-wall. Have you tried a Rift Dk2 or better? The reason why this movement is picking up so much, is because VR is like religion on contact. There is going to be a significant release in demand for content once more people start using VR. Yes, the best experience is going to be on PC for now. PC gaming has always blazed the trail for console gaming. And I think VR is the next step for experiences and the hardware it requires.

I think this gen will be the 1st gen to have revised hardware every 5years. Every thing will be fully FWD and backwards compatible so U don't loose any digital purchases.

When launched both MS & Sony will sell the older and newer systems side by side.
$199 for cheaper entry and $399 for more expansive model. All games will have same package you will just be prompt to d/l a gfx patch if U have the higher model console.

6-7 years tops

I hope the 4-5 year estimates are correct. Last gen you got the sense that they were constantly trying to figure out how to exploit the consoles and utilize the multi core processors, but this gen it feels more like they are hitting the wall already. Developers constantly scaling back graphics and features.

This year will really tell the story though IMO. After 2 years with the 360 I remember being shocked that games like Gears of War and Assassins Creed could run so well on consoles, so I'm hoping some of the fall releases give the same kind of feeling.

Looking at the graphical downgrades so far this gen with Watch Dogs and others I'm more often thinking this is all they could do??

People forget how many games were downgraded last gen before release. Even Halo 3 was downgraded from it' s original showing at E3. When Halo 4 released it looked insane. Better than than Halo 3 before it was downgraded.

People say these console are underpowered but The Order 1886 arguably matches up to PC and I dont just mean graphically. The cloth animation is the best I've ever seen in gaming. I would say thats pretty good for low budget hardware. Of course you dont see the preformance and clean look of a PC.

I'm not sure what people are looking for but the graphics never have and never will surpass PC.

I seriously hope we have new consoles before 2020. This gen has been so horrible so far imo. I wish it never happened, please end it quickly.

Many of the games lately have been dissapointing, broken, delayed or glitchy. Devs are are milking the consumer for DLC and we had more features on last gen consoles. It's ridiculous all the BS going on the industry right now. Also you would think these company's are "special". Their decision making is rather odd at times. *cough* Konami *cough* From what I've played/seen these games are uninspired and I dont mean every game only the majority. Next gen consoles are over hyped IMO. Not much reason to upgrade.

It's really sad too that there are no more AA games or middle tier games like during previous generations. I feel like if you don't like indies and remasters you are screwed this gen. There hasn't been a single game on xbox one besides Ryse that interests me. I guess you can count Halo MCC too but even that is a remaster. It's not much different on ps4 either though it is a LITTLE better, for me anyway because at least I get the very few multiplat games I want on ps4 or pc.

I just think this generation as a whole has been trash so far. Half the games worth owning are from the previous generation. No one is putting out much of anything and we are already like 2 years in. Plus the hardware for both consoles sucks ass. If this gen lasts as long as the last one I will lose my mind.

Cloud aint taking off this gen and if it did it be at the end of the generation.

Next gen starts when Sony says it does, right? Not this time though. The cloud will dictate when this gen officially ends. With the power of the cloud, the Xbox One will become timeless.

Pretty safe to say it's be somewhere in the range of 2019-2021.

A bigger "what if" is whether will forge ahead with another console, or stick to handheld and mobile.

Out of the MS, Sony and Nintendo, a new Ninty system is most iffy. Nintendo doesn't like releasing systems at a loss and the recent trend is for MS/Sony to make a bit of money off weak consoles right off the bat. But the systems still go for $350-400, which is typically out of the Nintendo console price range. They can always go for another weak console, but I think people are smarter now as Wii was a fad, Wii U bombed and the existing gamer base is lukewarm at MS/Sony X1/PS4 console performance.

Nintendo has a safe haven with handhelds which their systems always do well, but whether it can hold off smartphone/tablet gaming is unknown.
