PS4 Japan launch/sales

That's actually a little better than I expected, I thought it'd be between 250k-300k. Reading comments in other forums some people seem to have unrealistic expectations out of that market. I saw people claiming it'd be close to a million which was just never going to happen.

A lot lower than my expectation. I was expecting around 600-700k. Supply issue or Japanese do not care about console as much anymore, or poor games lineup? I cannot see the acticle (most game sites are banned at my workpalce), can anyone shed some lights.

Nah it was never going to reach those numbers in Japan.

Actually a bit of a surprise it did as well as it has with them heading towards handheld gaming more now days.

Yeah Japan is a shrinking market when it comes to consoles, Sony will still sell better than the competition there but I doubt it does any better than PS3 has.

Yes, the signs are all there.
-More people going mobile gaming (Japan, especially those living in big city like Toyko, tends to travel more on trains & buses, so mobile gaming make more sense),
-less console game development from Japanese developers, even less japanese developers still doing console design tehir game for Japanese,
-& Japanese traditional do not play much game not made in Japan for some reasons.

I think those numbers are good and on target. They will probably move around 500k in a months time. Really it's about the games, from the top 5 anticipated games in Japan list I posted earlier in the thread, only FF15 and Kingdom Hearts 3 were from the PS4, both which are not out yet.

They've got a few Japanese games coming in out in March so I think I'll move another batch in March.

1998.11.27 [Sega Dreamcast] (¥29.800) - 101.490 (3 days)

2001.09.14 [Nintendo GameCube] (¥25.000) - 133.719 (3 days)
2002.02.22 [Microsoft XBox] (¥34.800) - 123.929 (3 days)
2005.12.10 [Microsoft XBox 360] (¥29.000 / ¥39.795) - 62.135 (2 days)
2006.11.11 [Sony PlayStation 3] (¥49.980 / ¥59.980) - 88.443 (2 days)
2006.12.02 [Nintendo Wii] (¥25.000) - 371.936 (2 days)
2012.12.08 [Nintendo Wii U] (¥26.250 / ¥31.500) - 308.570 (2 days)
2014.02.22 [Sony PlayStation 4] (¥41.979 ) 322.083 (2 days)

So about half of what PS2 did and three times what PS3 did. I think that's pretty good. No one should've expected numbers matching the PS2. That era has come and gone.

Seems like a respectable sales pace -- not off the charts or anything, but slightly higher than most people were expecting. Big improvement over PS3, that's for sure.

I agree. No way it was going to pass the PS2 launch. That launch was nuts in Japan.

On track for 1 million in a week. ;)
You winked, so maybe you were just kidding, but I seriously doubt it'll be a million in a week. More like 500K, if they're lucky, and assuming Sony resupplies (which they reportedly were doing).

Yeah, I was extrapolating from the 2 days' data. But yeah, it will depend on Sony's supply stock and if demand continues in Japan.

Well, the first two days would include all the pre-orders and the majority of rabid interest in the console. If you wanted one, you had either pre-ordered or could (for the most part) get one in those first couple days. So I'm expecting a pretty big trailing off in sales numbers, after those first couple days. Maybe 500K by the end of the week, if they're lucky.

looks like games aren't moving for PS4 launch...

Topping the list is Knack, which sold over 300,000 copies. However, Knack comes with every PlayStation 4 sold in Japan, explaining the one-to-one attach rate. The other nine PS4 games in the top 20 are as follows:

  • 3.) Yakuza: Ishin (82,540)
  • 7.) Killzone: Shadow Fall (32,336)
  • 8.) Battlefield 4 (24,799)
  • 11.) Dynasty Warriors 8: Xtreme Legends (14,356)
  • 13.) Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag (13,862)
  • 14.) Call of Duty: Ghosts (13,701)
  • 15.) Tomb Raider: Definitive Edition (12,093)
  • 18.) FIFA 14 (8,80:cool:
  • 20.) Need For Speed Rivals (6,602)

Yeah, much more coming out on the PS3 to their liking lately.

Solid launch for the PS4 in Japan. It's true though, they mostly only care about handhelds these days.

Is Microsoft even launching the Xbox One in Japan? Or did they already? Seems kinda risky after the 360 got slaughtered over there.

They haven't announced anything. I wouldn't expect them to rush to market, that's for sure.

Yeah, thought so. No chance in hell they package Kinect with the One if they do bring the console to Japan. If NA ain't buying into it they sure as hell aren't.
