PS4: Over 1 million sold the first day in North America

Seems like the limiting factor would be supply. I imagine that however many consoles MS makes available on Day 1, they will sell out. It is just a question of how many consoles they can crank out for opening day -- that's how many they will sell.

So another forum discussion pointed out that in reality, PS4 simply filled their pre-order numbers.. (which were also 1M)...

Again its certainly record breaking and just goes to show Sony met their "quota" if you will... now the question is - can they crank out enough to meet the demand for the holiday season?

I still think both systems will end up with about equal sell through numbers by EOY...

I believe theyre preorder numbers were WW.

The Sony numbers are great, that part can't be understated.

The only way MS has any chance of hitting those numbers completely depends on their production. Store allotments would suggest Sony has the upperhand in production.

You're expecting X1 to sell only 50-60% of what PS4 sold, in NA? That's rather far-fetched.

I'm not expecting 1M within 24 hours, simply due to the price difference, and the fact that the PS4 was released one week prior. However, I can see X1 selling 700-800K in the same time period, which are still huge numbers.

What I'm more interested in is seeing how the public at large has changed since the last generation launched. What are the demographics of console purchasers today? Will Microsoft's gamble on TV integration pay off for the company? Will PS4 owners use media streaming services as much as X1 owners will?
I heart wanted them to sell as well, my mind says half, next week, we shall all know.

I agree with availability! XB1 and PS4 pre-orders are gone everywhere. My 3 local gamestops have told me the pre-orders were almost identical as far as numbers go. I believe it simply comes down to how many consoles were manufactured and will be available. Whats funny, is XB1 pre-order sales on Ebay are going for more than the PS4 were at this time, which is adjusted for the extra $100 mind you... (just a curious tid-bit).

Remember though.. I always take everything Sony OR MS says over twitter with a grain of salt!

It's still early days, as a matter of fact, we're just starting and the Xbox has yet to start.

We shouldn't be too quick to assume.

To be sure.
I'm not saying it will be terrible....it just will not be near 1 million

I'm expecting 500k-700k realistically.
The price & uncertainty about the console will make it hard to break that.

History of first month sales numbers so far (to be updated later)...

Seeing as most people buy only one console, Sony coming in first and cheaper and selling a mill, that's gotta cut into the install base potential of the Xbone. I don't see them matching these numbers.

Awesome job, Sony. Hope it continue to grow more within the next few weeks. :)

Considering that the difference is one week, I highly doubt most people will buy PS4 just because its release first. A few months to a year, I can understand.

Also, one thing I just can't understand about America, is that in most nations, people prefer to buy local brand over foreign one, when they are comparable (i.e price/spec). You see a 100 BMW before you see a Lexus in Germany, for instance. The amount of Sony fanboys in America still amaze me. Its like there are as many Manchester United (most popular English soccer team) supporters as Bayern Munich (most popular German soccer team)Supporters in Germany.

I'm actually a little excited at the idea of Sony outselling XB1 this gen, hopefully just enough to get MS to invest more in 1st party titles like original Xbox, offer better/more deals etc. etc.

MS really got comfy and started to coast a bit with 360. Kind like Sony with PS3 for the first half of its life.

These things need to go back and forth for the good of the end user in my opinion.

But they're not the same price at all.

The Xbox 1 is 25% more expensive.

If you advertise a chevy at $12,500 and a Honda at $10,000 the Honda is going to sell more in N.A. even though the chevy comes standard with voice activated gps, radio, a/c.

This!

Well I've looked everywhere around here, and they are nowhere to be found. You can forget getting one online, I swear these people sit at their computer all day hitting the refresh button.

Yeah, I think I'm just going to forget about it for now. Maybe upgrade my PC.

PS4 has built itself some serious momentum, great news.

I think some credit is due to their competition and their lack of further educating the consumer (not everyone visits forums and reads articles), that's not to take anything away from Sony but the E3 clusterf*** from MS helped Sony and made Sony's E3 a lot easier for them to win many people, even Xbox fans.

Microsoft's E3 wasn't the problem - it was actually pretty strong, at least until Sony came out with the haymakers to close out their conference. Actually, of the time from the MS launch until the 180, the E3 presentation was probably the high... well, least low point. Sony's arguably been coasting on their momentum from the launch through E3 period since, but clearly they've got a strong product and are having a very fine launch. Good times for everyone.
