PSB: PlayStation is no stranger to publishing titles on the PC, but Horizon: Zero Dawn is one of the largest games to make that leap. Is there anything you would say to PlayStation fans? What does it mean for the future?

HH:
Sure. I think it’s important that we stay open to new ideas of how to introduce more people to PlayStation, and show people maybe what they’ve been missing out on.

And to maybe put a few minds at ease, releasing one first-party AAA title to PC doesn’t necessarily mean that every game now will come to PC. In my mind, Horizon Zero Dawn was just a great fit in this particular instance. We don’t have plans for day and date [PC releases], and we remain 100% committed to dedicated hardware.

The way it works, Sony isn't going to release a first party game on PC until they've got as many sales as possible out of that game on the PlayStation platfrom, not to mention it has to fit their narrative to even end up on PC to begin with. Dreams is a VERY new AAA hit that is still bringing in a lot of money for Sony on the hardware and may likely do so for an extended time, and the fact that it doesn’t have a sequel, it kinda narrows those odds down. So you probably won't see Dreams on the PC until the end of PS5's life cycle or even PS6 if ever just based on the type of game it is. It would be kool, though.

To make extra money from the PC, Sony could simply release God of War 1 or even Sly Cooper 1 on the PC for it sell well. PlayStation has a huge catelog of AAA hits that has never seen the light of day on a PC. If Sony has a money making series, or just wants to promote it for a similar game releasing in the future, then it's easier to entice those on PC to jump in to the PlayStation ecosystem by throwing them a bone like that. Spider-Man for example, is a well liked icon across the globe. By it being an exclusive money maker to PlayStation, even now, this will likely be something that'll never make it to PC or won't make it to PC for a very, very long time.

If you want to believe that controller really is a game changer then so be it. I remember when the PS2 was so powerful that it was suggested that Saddam Hussein could weaponized them against his own people. Sony and their fanclubs in the gaming press has a embarrassing history of hyping up their products.
Dude they said the same stuff for MS and Nintendo controllers. Literally the same kind of stuff. I definitely love rumble, but the only feature I am interested in is the trigger resistance...

it doesn’t make much sense to wait so long. They can just port over every ps4 game to pc to help make up for the shift in generations.

The ps5 is I’m hopes of selling 10 million by March of next year. And if you look at the numbers, at over 100 million sold (maybe not all in working order), Sony only sells about 10% (more or less) per first party game. 10 percent is much smaller of whatever they’ll sell from launch to March. I doubt any Sony first party game is gonna sell numbers like that of Nintendo when the switches first launch, where they sold more first party games for the switch then available/sold consoles

Actually it does when you think about it. A lot of these games end up on PS Now as a way to promote the service and PlayStation as a whole. Because PlayStation Now is also an extension to the PC market and will likely extend into the mobile space, my guess is Sony will adhere to that strategy as they are doing now by introducing their first party content. I don't see them depleting that reservoir just for the PC and setting themselves back on services and their PS4 platform as a whole. If anything, i believe there will be a balance between the two: release a game or two on PC to pick up a few extra sales, PC users sign up for PS Now or buy PS5, and PS4 gradually phases out with said exclusives.

The PlayStation's first party library is vast enough that Sony could just as easily pull any title they want from their catelog and move it to PC without removing the purpose and the face of the previous platform as it continues to sell down. So sales aren't just limited to the PS4. I think the focal point is PS4 since that is what the competition is doing, but at the expense of that, the platform has lost its value. Every game won't end up on PC in the very same way every game doesn't end up on PS Now. It will be a balancing act to get the consumer on board to PlayStation.

in a way, perhaps. But has horizon zero dawn shown up on psnow yet? It is their first big title to hit the pc market via steam. It sold very well too. And they now have a team that will be porting over a series over to the pc and other consoles. So they have the tools, the means and the mode, so why not take advantage of it and get those funds

It was on PS Now for a few months

No. Horizon isn't on PS Now yet. Sony obviously chose to put it on PC to show the PC demographic what they were missing out on and to also raise that same awareness for their next installment while profiting from it at the same time. It's the basics to marketing your product without chopping off your legs and setting yourself back in the process.

And you're right, there is money to be made on other platforms. But to devalue your own platform to get there is not a working, long term strategy, and Sony obviously knows that. To catch the bigger prize, you sample that experience out to get that consumer aboard. By doing the complete opposite of that, you negate any reasonable purpose for that consumer to become interested in your product. It is when you get that consumer aboard is where you make your money because now that consumer is within that ecosystem.

Because Sony is launching a Rachet and Clank for the PS5, don't be surprised if a Rachet and Clank title from the PS3 or PS2 shows up on PC to garner attention for the one on PS5.

but why put on something so old, that’s probably already been emulated on pc. Why not more relevant titles that are already in the zeitgeist? Like the latest, of ten, God of War games (not including the remakes or collections)? Hell give them killzone shadowfall or uncharted 4 or better yet bring back it’s multiplayer (even though it seems tlou2 multiplayer will come to pc soon)

how well did HZD sell, it’s only on steam no? Wouldn’t it have made more sense, for pc gamers, to release it on psnow with the free trial? If it garnered worthy numbers then release the for pc or other older games that that you feel they missed out on?

I didn’t get it because it’s their first entry in a long time and I’m the hands of another dev, not GG...it being a buggy mess was predictable

If the game has sold all it could on the PlayStation platform, why not bring it over to the PC -- especially if it has a sequel? You can't expect a game that has a lot of life still left in it to end up on PC when it is still selling on the console. All you are doing is slashing the life of that platform and in return, a potential buyer. The logical thing to do, which is what they are doing, is releasing games that has already ran its course on the platfrom. That's why the PC is likely to get an old build.

Horizon Zero Dawn sold very well but it ran its course -- obviously on PS Now, too. If you never signed up for PS Now when it was on there, it wouldn't make much sense to put it back on there to be played free of charge. It's easier just to port the game over to the PC and pick up a sale that way - especially since they already know how well the game sold just based on the software sales alone.

And so those may fall in a bin to be selected to move to the PC. But it has to be the right fit to move to PC rather than just a number of old games moving to PC just because they are old. They have lots of old games that'll sell just as much as those on their PS4. No selection is exclusive to the PS4. Horizon was obviously one of those games that ran its course on the platform and was a great fit to move to PC since another was launching down the line and it would raise awareness to that. Sony still has hardware to sell, so to think that they are going to deplete that library completely onto the PC would only cut the life of that console in half. I don't see that happening. The key is to get the user on their platform rather than killing the platform off just to sell that one particular game to that consumer.

but if they could keep things fresh with relatively new games or niche titles like “the last guardian”, shadow of the colossus, locoroco or knack they’d be given the opportunity to relish in those worlds that deserve a larger fan base and pc would be perfect

Releasing their first party games will have minimal impact on losing any sales on console. They will end up selling more overall and have even more saturation.

The fact that none of their titles are even on PC gives that same, fresh opportunity, though. I think the PC is important, but it doesn't hold the same importance as it does for their competition. So where you may feel like Sony needs to saturate that platform because people are running out of PlayStation content to play, for Sony that goal is simply to get some of their content on that platform to persuade that user into their ecosystem and to increase profit margins at the same time, not the opposite of that. But this is why they have PS Now. All of their first party titles aren't on that server and if they are, it's not completely new content otherwise people would simply stop buying the hardware. The same will apply to PC more than likely.

So, by them even releasing something like Little Big Planet 1 on PC, that user may feel compelled to sign up for PS Now and try Little Big Planet 2 along with a few other games. If they like that, maybe they'll feel compelled to pick up a cheap PS4 to try Dreams as well as a plethora of other pieces of content for that system. If that works, then they'll probably pick up a PS5 and try out the newer content. It's all a balancing act.

When Sony releases a platform, from launch to say 5 years, that platform has to sell. When they move onto a new console, the previous platform is still bringing in those sales for an additional 5 years as they try to get 10 years out of all their platforms. The only difference is Sony scales back (not completely) releasing much of any new first party software for that system. This is why i don't see them dumping all that content on the PC in one go. It will likely be rationed out without rapidly cutting the life of their platform.

Hey all. Over the next few days, we’re going to spotlight some upcoming games coming to PlayStation VR, including some announcements and updates for previously revealed PS VR titles.

It kicks off today at 3pm BST / 4pm CEST / 7am PST, and we’ll have further updates to share each day at the same time through to Friday.

And as mentioned, this is all about the games. So to manage expectations, there’ll be no PS5-related news.

And there it is...

I told you... Sony is going to run the clock all the way down -- likely to the wire if they have to, because they can afford to wait it out.

Luminous Productions shows off Luminous Engine

Project-Athia-Teaser-Screenshot-5.jpg

Lush environments are shown being built in the World Editor, with lakes and forests populating once-barren environments. The video is focused on the Luminous Engine's approach to procedural generation - the description notes that this proprietary environment builder has the power to fill open worlds "in a natural yet intentional way."

As well as an online session about procedural generation, the developers will present talks on collision-aware 3D path-finding and automating Quality Assurance using deep learning.

We first learned about Project Athia when it was revealed during June's PS5 event. The game is yet to offer a release date but is being written by Rogue One's Gary Whitta and a team of A-list writers and is described as a "thrilling, other-worldly adventure."

We’re working on the next generation edition of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt!

Developed to take advantage of the most powerful gaming hardware, the next-gen edition of the game will feature a range of visual and technical improvements — including ray tracing and faster loading times — across the base game, both expansions, and all extra content.

The next generation edition of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt will release as a standalone purchase for PC, Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5, as well as a free update for everyone who already owns the game on PC, Xbox One and PlayStation 4.

Won‘t the Xbox One hold this version back?
