Review scores will always have these drawbacks. There's no way around it. You can cite all the limitations and problems you like (I know the list as well as anyone), but if you want a simple way to summarize an evaluation, there is no better, simpler way than a number.

Granted, if you want all the information, you can read all the reviews. Sure, of course. That's not what I'm talking about, though. I'm talking about the summarizing process. How do you "sum up" your assessment. A grade? A category? A number? A set of stars? A paragraph? A tweet? What I'm saying is, the numerical/star system has advantages that the others don't. That's why these systems are in place everywhere you look, and why, despite their limitations, they are never going away (in fact, they're becoming more popular all the time).

but it isn't a summary at all, which is my point. A number does not summarize a 10 paragraph review in any way. You may read the review or play the game and feel the number is fair, but it does not summarize the pros, the cons, it does not reflect the reviewers position on features or bugs, etc.

You say if you want all the information then read the reviews, but you have to read the review anyway to put the number in any real context. A number of 88 on its own is pretty much worthless. You may say it shows that the is game good, but does it really? How many high rated games have you played that you just didn't like, games like watchdogs for example. How many games have you played with low scores that you loved. Plenty on here are enjoying the crap out of Destiny & Dying light. despite there relatively low scores of 76 & 73.

A number on its own is worthless. It doesn't tell you a thing. It would be like Einstein coming out and saying here is my theory of relativity, E=MC squared. On its own the mathematical equation is worthless, only when you read his thesis does it make sense and then be applied.

What's really odd is the way gamers seemed to be conditioned to perfer "7" to "Recommended"

Which of those two is the better single descriptor?

Thoughts?

Nvidia Holding Press Event March 5th, Showing What Will “Redefine Future of Gaming”
by Chris Harding (12 hours ago) 46 @ChrisHardingTGC

PCNEWS

Nvidia are to host a special press event this March, at least that’s according to an email being sent out to numerous outlets from the firm’s Chief Executive Officer.

The email invitation, which you can see down below, invites attendees to an hour-long presentation that will be hosted on March 3rd by Nvidia where the firm will show off something that has been five years in the making and will supposedly redefine the future of gaming. Now that’s a pretty bold claim.

What could it be? Personally, I haven’t got a clue, but an educated guess would be something along the lines of a new graphics processor capable of rendering eight millions pixels at 3000 frames per second. Or not, but until the event happens, my hypothesis still stands as valid. Think Schrodinger’s cat.

On a serious note, it could be a many number of things as Nvidia have their fingers in a many number of pies. The firm released their first dedicated gaming machine with the Nvidia Shield and followed it up with a tablet, so could we be about to see an Nvidia console of sorts? We’ll have to wait and see on that.

It is a summary. A one-point summary. That's the whole point, purpose, and intention of it -- to encapsulate the reviewer's sentiment in a single point of data. It can be a number, it can be a category, it can be a set of different colors. You can continue to argue that these are poor summaries, and that they do not do justice to the whole of the review (which is fine, and I agree, but that's a different subject and not one I'm interested in rehashing) -- but they are still summaries. That is their purpose.

A numerical rating is not worthless. They have several advantages. Again, that is why they are so popular.

I give your post a 6.3. :tounge:

RIP AMD.

Cool, something to look forward to (and then be disappointed by).

The headline says March 5th, but the announcement says March 3rd. I think it's March 3rd.

Here it comes, the announcement of the Bethesda Cinematic Universe and all its Phase 1 details. They may also mention the opening of their new interactive theme park, Skyrim, with its dragon mounts and live "NPCs" who walk around and shoot people in the knee all day.

I feel like a broken record, but people keep bringing it up.

Bethesda is not going to stop using Gamebryo. They've been using it since the development of Morrowind (when it was called NetImmerse). It's a critical part of their tech, and has been for nearly two decades.

This is not a bad thing, and Gamebryo is not a bad engine. There are plenty of other games (Epic Mickey, El Shaddai, Rocksmith, Catherine) that use Gamebryo and don't have the same problems that Bethesda's games do. Bad animations are not Gamebryo's fault. High levels of bugs are not Gamebryo's fault. Bethesda's games are huge and complex, and they need better QA.

If, despite all this, you are seriously saying, "They'd better abandon Gamebryo or I'm done," then you might as well quit now, because the use of NetImmerse/Gamebryo/Creation is a foregone conclusion.

Next Gen OpenGL. Calling it right now. MS/DX12 be worried because Sony will be utilizing it.

Well, I know what's on my wish list. For now, I don't think we'll have realtime ray-tracer hardware yet.. but I would like a graphics card based on REYES architecture that can handle many many triangles. We are still bottlenecked with geometry in games. It's a real shame.. Until we tackle that.. getting CGI-like graphics is still a pipe dream IMO.

If Nvidia comes out with a sup-powerful console, I don't know if I will be able to resist.

I don't care about NVIDIA refining gaming. I JUST WANT MOOORE POOOWEER!!!~

I think they are annoucing GTX Titan 2, GM200. Long rumored to have 3,072 maxwell CUDA cores.

Well, time to stop spreading spiteful lies/FUD about H1Z1, right?

I see introllovision in here cheerleading Sony bankruptcy and Lying about their financial results. Protip: The sale of SOE did not make it on their latest quarterly report like he Lied that they would.

PlanetSide 2 creative director leaves company after layoffs hit former SOE studio
By Michael McWhertor on Feb 13, 2015 at 8:54p

Matt Higby, creative director on PlanetSide 2, announced that he resigned from Daybreak Game Company — the studio formerly known as Sony Online Entertainment — in a post on the PlanetSide subreddit this week. Higby's departure comes just a couple days after Daybreak laid off portions of its staff.

On Reddit, Higby said it was "time for a change," and that his exit from Daybreak wasn't exactly a spur of the moment decision.

"This is a move I've been considering for a while now," he said, "and the reorganization provided the right opportunity for me to exit."

Higby has served as creative director for PlanetSide 2, the free-to-play, massively multiplayer online shooter, since 2011. He joined Sony Online Entertainment in 2001, according to his LinkedIn profile.

"Planetside 2 is in great hands, with terrific people who honestly care about the game and the players," Higby assured PlanetSide fans on Reddit. "I can't stress this enough, the folks working on every aspect of the game, developers, marketing, community are talented, hard working people who care more than you can imagine — I'm fully confident they're going to do an amazing job on the next leg of the journey."

Higby later noted that "making video games is a team sport," and stressed that "A lot of that team is still there, still working their asses off, and they need your support right now."

PlanetSide 2 producer David Carey and technical director Ryan Elam indicated through Reddit and Facebook that they had also left Daybreak and PlanetSide behind.

Sony announced it had sold off Sony Online Entertainment to investment firm Columbus Nova earlier this month. The change in ownership resulted in a name change to Daybreak Game Company, but the San Diego-based studio said it would continue to work on existing and in-development games, like H1Z1, EverQuest Next and PlanetSide 2. The developer is in the process of bringing PlanetSide 2 to PlayStation 4.

Layoffs hit former SOE studio Daybreak Game Company, includes EverQuest lead
By Michael McWhertor on Feb 11, 2015 at 2:28p

The game developer formerly known as Sony Online Entertainment, the home ofEverQuest, PlanetSide and H1Z1, is undergoing layoffs today, according to former employees of the studio. The recently rebranded Daybreak Game Company is cutting back under its new ownership.

Included in the layoffs are prominent employees David Georgeson, former director of development at SOE, and Linda Carlson, former director of global community relations. On Twitter, Georgeson said he's no longer guiding the EverQuest games, saying, "Other dreamers will steer now." Carlson wrote on Facebook that she'd been "released from the best and most challenging job I have ever had."

The studio confirmed the layoffs in an email to Polygon and offered the following statement.

"As part of a strategic decision to rationalize the business, Daybreak Game Company announced today that it will eliminate positions in both its San Diego and Austin studios. This alignment of resources better positions the newly independent studio for future growth opportunities and developments, including delivering on its legacy of making top online games and establishing a solid foundation for future multi-platform success. These reductions will not affect the operation of current games and the company will continue on its mission to partner with its player community to drive the future and push the boundaries of online gaming."

The developer didn't detail the extent of the layoffs.

Last week, Sony Online Entertainment announced it had been sold off by Sony and renamed Daybreak Game Company. Daybreak retained ownership of its legacy and in-development games, saying it planned to continue work on projects like EverQuest Landmark, EverQuest Next, PlanetSide 2, H1Z1 and more.

Gamebryo is a solid game engine. Yeah it has quirky physics and on consoles it can have a mediocre frame rate sometimes (it must hit the teens when it's a clusterfuk of stuff going on), but it makes up for it with awesome scale and visuals.

Looking back, Fallout 3 still had among the best atmospheres. Not talking art style, but just wandering the landscape and looking around at various times of the day/night cycle and seieng things far into the horizon you could walk to. ES games are similar, but Fallout 3's more modern era gives way to more variety of structures.

If Gamebryo is going to live on, they just have to tidy up bugginess and improve the physics/animations somehow. The scale and variety is there. It's difficult because the game has so much variety of slopes, terrain and character models that it would take a lot to make sure it all looks right.

Not surprising that all characters and monsters have that glossy ice skating effect going up and down angles/stairs.
