I think its woven into the narrative & gameplay of living in some sort of time loop. Its in the title "Return-al". Ala you will die and return as many times as needed until you figure out how to progress. But yeah, if you have to constantly replay the same sections that could get old and put some off and compel them to stop playing. For me, it depends on how punishing it is and how much fun it is to repeat sections.

Listening to IGN's Podcast Beyond, they're saying dying actually opens up areas with story and upgrade unlocks for future attempts. if you don't die much, you might actually miss things and make the game harder.

Sounds like Demon's Souls/Dark Soul series/Bloodborne.

Yup, definitely sounds Demon's Souls like, where dying is part of the game to help you to learn how to progress through the level.

Eurogamer/Digital Foundry are the best. I have heard the game has FPS drops. Should be interesting to see what DF has to say about that.

I'm just glad everything seems to be working out for Housemarque. They really needed to step out of their comfort zone and get very risky here with Returnal and nice to see Sony stepping up big to support them.

Let's hope sales pays off for them.
So I shouldn’t buy it at a discount at Best Buy?

Yeah, the day 1 patch is like 13gigs. I wanted to start playing but the countdown is still up so I guess I'll have to wait until tomorrow to play.

That's a big patch.

Not sure if this is a game I'm going to put a ton of time into or not, it feels great though and the graphics are very nice in some ways. This kind of crisp shooting and traversal would feel good in something like Mass Effect, andromeda tried to do something similar but it failed.

I want to buy. The idea though of having play turns that extends upwards of hours is a huge turnoff. I have like one day a week where that sort of time commitment is available. Chipping away at this game doesn’t seem possible.

Just ordered from walmart. Not sure when it'll be delivered though. Their in-store dept is shut down bc of lockdown right now so can't even buy in store.

Watching lots of gameplay. I like the combat and flow. However, the story appears to be lacking.

I'm currently in the middle of God of War and enjoy the combat, but it's the story and dialog between characters and environments (puzzles, treasure, etc.) that really fill it out as a whole.

At this pace, it'll be awhile before I grab Returnal anyway.

Hey U2, thanks for posting the DF breakdown. This game uses Unreal Engine 4. And boy ohh boy, its a stark difference from Outriders that also uses UE4. I wonder if its due to differences in budget, developer talent or a combination of both. I am a little disappointed with some heavy use of Motion Blur, I've come to really dislike that technique but I can deal with it.

Just had a glitch after using the fabricator and now none of the doors open and teleporter doesn't work. Can only restart cycle as far as I know so everything lost very cool.
