Damian Thong (really!? :D ( The same Guy to predict slim and Neo, now claims that PS5 will be relased in fall 2018 with a reveal either at E3 2017 or a Playstation meeting close to Scorpios release.

It makes sense, pretty much a reversal of The tactic MS have been using for the past year.

If not officially announced by Sony prior to the release of Scorpio it's not happening.

That would really be really stupid. I have decided I'm buying a Pro. If they announce another console under a year later, I will be done with Sony. I don't think biannual updates for consoles will ever be a good thing. Especially if they went to a full "PS5" only 2 years after the Pro. There would be way too much backlash.

This rumor has to be a load of nonsense. They would look so desperate, IMO. It would defy logic. This is made up by someone who feels disappointed with Pro, obviously. Any time anyone says "spring" in the release date, it's a dead giveaway that the sh!t is made up.

Fall 2019, at the earliest. The whole point of the Pro is to extend the life of the PS4. They should wait at least 2 years before announcing something else.

no way. they are dropping 2 consoles in the same year and to have another one in a year later or 2 is just dumb. They have gambled and its not going to pay off. Also they are not going to outspend MS in anyway shape or form.

If this rumor is a Sony tactic ( which I seriously doubt), wouldn't it also hinder sales of the Pro?

Sony releasing the PS5 4.5 years into a gen they are dominating makes no sense

Edit: Some reason I thought it said spring so 5 years is more reasonable but still not happening

It doesn't make sense at all. The Pro would have only been out 8 months before E3 2017.

My guess is that they got wind of MS and Scorpio and felt they had to counter with something. Otherwise it does make little sense. Hey, we're winning 2:1... let's change up the game!

MS is likely the one driving everything. The Pro makes sense as a counter to Scorpio. MS is going to drop a monster box that maybe they can't directly compete with, so rush out something a whole year earlier in hopes of keeping that installed user base happy.

So Sony want to completely shoot themselves in the foot?

Or they totally fear Scorpio

It could happen. 2019 is probably more likely though. Sony isn't going to let Microsoft bask in the glory for long. But then it's Xbox 5 right after that so yeah.

Not sure why people think it would be stupid for Sony to release the PS5 two years after the Pro as if Microsoft releasing the 360 just four years after the OG Xbox wasn't stupid. Or the Scorpio four years after the One isn't stupid. We've reached a point where 2-3 years for upgrades is becoming the norm. Couldn't get your consoles right the first time huh? Thanks Microsoft.

The Pro is an upgrade, not a new console. If PS5 drops in 2018 it's right on target with the 4-5 year mark that everyone claims is the sweet spot. Unless Sony is doing it, i guess.

Wouldn't a "new generation" require a cut from the old? Otherwise, it's all iterative from here on out, as I expect. It would be way too soon though, imo. 2018 would be crazy.

It's not exactly iterative. The PS4 Pro cannot have exclusive games, therefore games will be held back by the original PS4 console. A PS5 would break free of that.

That's what I'm saying. If it is a whole new gen, then old games no longer stay, and you have to start all iver again a year and maybe a half after Neo releases.

Eff. That.

I'd rather a slow fazing of old hardware, but my games stay compatible. I'm not even close to certain there is an appetite for that kind of release schedule.

Beyond that, we wl be having great games with consistently nice IQ and performance for said period. It's going to be a harder and harder sell, imo.

A 2018 new gen that makes your new/old machine obsolete will piss people right off. Look at the moaning now, and we hadn't even had 1080p under control yet!

Sony wouldn't go through the expense of starting a new generation that soon after the release of PS4 Pro just to counter something MS is doing a year from now. People keep hyping up scorpio but don't forget MS is releasing that a year after the Pro, probably at a higher price and nothing they have done up to this point has turned the tide when it comes to PS4 vs X1 sales. MS has to be more aggressive right now, anything less than what Sony does will be pointless as they (MS) are the ones trying to gain ground. Sony has no reason to rush the PS5, they aren't sitting in their offices crapping their pants at the thought of a stronger console releasing a year after their newest one and until MS sustains hardware sales gains for a long enough time put a big dent in Sony's lead I don't think Sony really has any reason to push a new console out for at least 3 more years.

We've all seen what happens when one company sits idle and rests on their past accomplishments. It makes perfect sense for Sony to not sit back and let MS catch up. We've all seen what happens when a company gets cocky and thinks it will just roll on to the next gen. PS2 - 3, 360 to X1.

This rumor is full-on reactionary butthurt from Scorpio. No doubt that even Sony execs will do nothing to quell it either as their shorts have brown streaks too.

5 year gen is fine but its hard to believe Sony wants to go back to 5 year gens when they are releasing a console whose purpose should be to extend this one. It doesn't make as much sense for them to want to start over as it does for Microsoft.

2018 is two years away, not one. So there is still that. But yeah, five years is too short. Unless they make it all backwards compatible, then I don't think I would mind.

That would depend on when in 2018, but Neo is releasing at the End of this year. I did say "and a half", though. Even two years is not enough, imo. Especially if it's a "new gen" that starts from scratch.

"and maybe a half year." They aren't releasing January 1, 2018. PlayStation consoles have always released holiday season. So over two years actually.

Still too soon. I don't think you can treat consoles like iPhones. Usually what goes on phones is disposable junk, and phones always seems to start running like crap when the new ones come out. That and the actual important stuff carries over. I know I'm at a place where phones are good enough that I don't need or feel compelled to get a newer model. The benefits, while there, are just too small for it to matter.

Still, its all up in the air now, who knows how it's going to pay out.

They wont make another console for a while. They are dropping 2 which they cost tons of money, a VR which is going to fail. There is no way SONY can come up with the money to make another console in 2 years. I can see maybe 4.

They are not going to out spend MS that is for sure.

I didn't say it wasn't too soon. But it's not a year out. And it's not analogous to smart phones. Console generations typically have a life span of five to six years.
