Steam in-home streaming is live for all users
by Jessica Conditt @JessConditt (1 hour ago)

Steam's in-home streaming service is available to all users starting today – for now, the hosting computer must be a Windows PC, but Valve says SteamOS, Linux and Mac OS X hosting is coming soon. Users with multiple computers on the same network are now able to play PC games on lower-end computers, and play PC games on Mac OS X, SteamOS or Linux.

Yes, Dark Souls 2 on your Macbook Air.

To stream, users must log into Steam on a Windows PC (for now), and then log into Steam on another computer on the same network. Then check out your Steam library and start streaming some games. Once a game is installed on one computer, there's no need to install it on the other streaming computers. As Steam describes it:

"When you play a game using In-Home Streaming, video and audio are sent through your home network from your high-end gaming PC to another device in your home. From here, your keyboard, mouse, and controller input is sent back to the remote computer."

Steam's breakdown of the in-home streaming service can be found here.[/quote]

So you can play your console from the "comfort of my couch or armchair".

Well, that's cute. I can play my PC games from the comfort of my bed using my 5 year old laptop.

The PC crowd approves :)

Wow....that's kinda awesome.

It is. I plan on testing it out with my laptop later tonight. I wonder if settings like resolution get changed on the PC running the game or just for that instance. Either way would be somewhat bothersome. If it saves to the host PC that means I have to change it back when I play on my gaming PC, if it saves just for that session then I have to change it each time I play off my laptop.

Still, it'll be kind of cool to be able to hook my laptop up to my living room TV and play my games out there if I want or as I said in the OP, be able to lay back in bed and play a game on my laptop (I have a dinner tray that would work awesome for this).

Cool.

Have you tested this out? Post some screenshot comparisons and lag/delay guess-timations. My wives laptop is currently dead or else I'd test it out myself.

Looks pretty laggy.

I'll have to get to it this weekend. Apparently I don't have a proper network setup and I'm too lazy during the week to bother doing it. If I spent more time in the living room than I do my media room I'd be more inclined to bother but I don't so it can wait.

But I'll be sure to report back with my personal findings as soon as I get it all up and running.

As for the laggy part. That could prove true on any device but in my experience my iPad and Android tablet wi-fi are notoriously slow. In the same area of my home my laptop will run youtube videos @ 720p without ever buffering while my android tab and ipad buffer every 15-20 seconds.

I have to imagine this would work the same way nvidia shield works with mostly the same performance regarding lag. I guess it also depends on the quality of your router/network/wi-fi adapter.

That would be cool if I could do it using a Ipad. I only have one comp though so doesn't really do anything for me.

I heard Shield also got better over time, so we can probably expect lag to be mostly cleared up after a while. Very cool feature though, this will be great when I finally get around to doing my next build and maybe feel like playing in a different room or whatever.

Not the same thing.

Can playstation now stream PS4 games to your ipad, mac or windows PC? Can it stream games to all of them? Can you play a PS4 game on your PS4, decide you want to move to another room then start the game on your laptop in that other room and pick up from exactly where you left off?

Can consoles do this? Nope.

Can PCs do this soon? Yup.

Can PCs do this without noticeable lag? Nope.

Have fun playing a streamed game in another room that requires a hint of reflexes and as little lag as possible. However, if the intent is to play Chess, then sure, go for it.

I see you have extensive experience with this new Steam feature. Please do share with us the games you have played, including any videos you've recorded showing latency times.

Better yet, write up an "article" on your "gaming site". With your apparent vast experience with this new feature you're sure to get many, many hits from curious gamers such as myself.

Why do I need to test it out to prove lag? That Batman video above testing it out shows lag already.

This is true so 4get about MP games.
True. Granted, playing games like chess is a gentle jab at Idle (which he got mad about as usual), but for games that don't need pinpoint response, it's probably fine. But anything like shooters, fighters and racers where millisecond lag can make or brake you forget it. Play games like that direct on the hooked up PC.

Damn it! I knew there was something I forgot to do.

I forgot to get emotional over someone's uneducated assumptions!

BBL, gotta go get mad about it.

You can move to another room then start the game on your PS Vita in that other room and pick up from exactly where you left off. So Playstation actually does have the Steam equivalent of this.

Somewhat, yeah. But it's only that one device. It's more like nvidia shield than Steam streaming

But yeah, for the most part they do have it.

So yeah um SSF4 Ultra will be smooth online using this....

Depends on your network. If you're wi-fi then you'll probably have a fair bit of input lag but not as much as is caused by playing online to begin with. If your network is hard-wired (like mine is) then it shouldn't be much worse than the input lag created by your monitor or gamepad/arcade stick.

PS4 has done this since day one. It may only work with the Vita right now, but it's basically the same thing.

But only vita.

This is actually pretty cool as you could set up any old small cheap pc near a living room tv without moving main pc from desk area.
....and do that for any tv in the house.

As for lag, we don't know what pc hardware that video is running the game on. It's streaming from within your own home network...so there should be less lag than dealing with the cloud, which console gamers hype to no end.

We also don't know what kind of delay is introduced using a pad as the screen.

We all know that different sets have different delays. Right? We know that, right?

It's cool, but honestly not very useful for me with already having a gaming rig hooked up to my TV.

Indeed. For me though, looking ahead, I see possible scenarios playing out. I can now make my spare room into a game room without moving my pc desk. I haven't done so because that's our main pc, and it's the pc my daughter also uses to game....and I really didn't want her in a separate room away from prying eyes on the pc.

I'll see how this plays out, but I have one old pc and 2 old laptops....might be nice......

I am gonna give this a try, def am interested, I just don't have a low spec PC in my entire house that is currently hooked up , I have a Athlon XP 2800+ machine, a P4 2.8GHz w/ HT machine, and a AMD 64 X24200 machine all sitting in my basement but they would all boot up if I wanted to get them!

Vita TV, right?

I was just going to edit my post when I thought about his PS4 comment in there. This news is not new....at least to me anyway
