Take this fwiw
Christ I feel like I never really recovered from 2008. I got into truck driving and I can't get out of it. I really don't want to still be doing this crap in my 50s or even beyond.
At least I'm making money in my current job, but it's frustrating trying to make some long term plans. There has already been slow downs in Trucking that seems like a bad sign possibly related to the Trade War.
More numbers like that and she will be dropping out soon
Holding someone's words up from the 1980s against a modern standard is just an impossibly silly purity test that nobody is going to pass. You mean Joe wasn't reverse woke 3+ decades ago?
The problem with this is once you start doing it, you instantly start disqualifying older candidates with experience and automatically accept younger ones. Don't vote for Biden because of what he says today, not what he said long ago.
To an extend I agree but look at someone like Bernie. He's been talking about the same things for decades. He isn't just taking whatever positions are politically convenient.
The positions you have held and the things you said shouldn't be held against the standards of 2019 but they do show the kind of leader they are
That's a fair point, but there's a big difference in flip flopping on a position over a year or two and doing it over decades. Plus, what Biden said back then was a big nothing burger. It only stands out looking through the lens of many decades later. I mean there's people in this thread who weren't even alive when those words were spoken. I didn't look up the year but I'm guessing I was a little kid.
There's a reason "progress" is in the word progressive. We need to cancel "cancel-culture".
People's stances can change. Looking at my Facebook memories, I was staunchly against Al Gore and the climate change people. As time went on, I saw more data, and I realized that my way of thinking was naive, short sighted, and carried bias. So, for me to have felt that way 12 years ago'ish, and to have done a complete 180 on it, I can think that someone 20, 30, 40 years ago could do the same.I don't think it really applies here. When you are on the wrong side of an issue it matters. Even if most people would have been on the wrong side.
The argument that he has been around for a long time so of course there will be some mistakes is fair to say but he can't use his experience as a plus and pretend any missteps along the way don't count.
Reagan would drop "Monkey," and would fit right in with the current nazi party.I was a hardcore Republican through Reagan and even Bush Sr. It took Bill Clinton to show me that Democrats weren't the crazy people they were made out to be, and eventually W Bush really showed me what the once great GOP had become.
If the point isn't to get people to change for the better, what is the point? You can't even compare the politics of the 80s and 90s to now. Heck, Reagan today would be run out of the GOP as a "libtard". Back then, people still stood for some principles, even if they weren't perfect. The polarization we see today barely existed back then.
Change is good as long as you show real change and leadership. It can't just be "oh it was X number of years ago so who cares"
If you don't like him now, that's perfectly fine. Don't dislike him because he didn't have a view on drugs back in the 80s that people didn't start having until the last few years.
He should, but hasn't he? Does his policy since those years answer most questions? He has to answer for past positions. People should be willing to hear those answers.

I feel like he has been pretty evasive but I'm just saying being wrong in the past isn't irrelevant just because a lot of others were too.

What instead of addressing anything, Biden just starts telling weird anecdotal stories
Something about having a record player going. Or standing up to gang leaders called Corn Pop.
This is the problem with the internet. We just clicked on this video today. Is he going to need to re-explain it every single time the video gets a hit? That's exactly how we end up with nobody hosting the Oscars in our current SJW climate. Maybe he already has? Or maybe nobody's asked him? I honestly don't know.
You're acting like he was caught being racist or wearing blackface. If this were something major I'd say absolutely, but this? The 80s were "just say no" and drug users were looked at as criminals. This wasn't some edgy stance back then.
My point is be careful where you set the bar, because I think you're setting it somewhere we don't want it to be. Obama was against gay marriage in 2008. Should we never mention him ever again? That's the danger of cancel culture.
We should all have a record player.Actually its the exact opposite. You are equating it to that. This is normal politics before Trump lowered everyone's standards. 30 years ago he ran for President and was forced to answer for his plagiarism. 14 years ago Howard Dean blew up for yelling Byahhhh. Explaining a past position is hardly anything outrageous. And its just one video talking about it. Big whoop.
He isn't being canceled. He is leading the primary and is leading in black voters. And doing so after a debate where his dentures almost fell out and told parents they should play a record player for their kids.
