The Interviews Of Phil Spencer - To P3 And Beyond

I’m no hardware/software engineer but I’m sure most games would work just fine on the series x and s. Seeing as how powerful the Steamdeck is, which is just below a series s.

I think Phil has been talking about working something out with Steam since he took over during the Xbox one era.

If it happens with said stores I think it may be limited to games that are “certified” for ease of use/play.

They would need to be ported like all most games these days as it's not currently just a flip of a switch if they want native games running . They don't use the exact same API for Epic/steam as the XDK.

I could see steam, but more than likely not for egs…. Phil’s been talking about steam working with Xbox since he first took over for don. But I don’t see all games being compatible like how Steamdeck works, some games will be compatible others won’t. I dono

Sony annexing cities must be ok though 😎
The cities were begging Sony to liberate and starve them.

“(FYI) Jez Corden has heard that Microsoft had an all-hands meeting recently with Phil Spencer.

They discussed what the future of Xbox looks like, and discussed the rumors of going third-party.

Phil said The decisions we take today, are about ensuring Xbox's future not for years but for decades to come and Xbox will be stronger in the years/decades to come and he specifically said that includes hardware.

Also, an Xbox higher-up recently DM Jez saying “There's a lot of things that we do wrong at Microsoft, and there's a lot of things I would change and there a lot of things that maybe I understand people being worried about. But there's one thing you shouldn't worry about and that is, the commitment to gaming.”

According to Jez, there has been a disruption in the brand, and part of that disruption is how costs have grown in recent years. Everything has gotten more expensive and that's why they put Sea of Thieves on the PlayStation. Rare has no cash flow apart from SoT, and with expenses going up, especially in the UK (Brexit/COVID), adding another revenue stream to SoT is crucial!

Microsoft wants each division to stand on its own two feet. Every team needs to stand on their own two feet eventually.”

It seems the Gamepass model is not as sustainable now as previously thought with increased costs for AA/AAA gaming. Especially when they continue to cannibalize Xbox sales further while most GP users wait for MS to pay to put games on the service. In the short term, it was nice for consumers but with rising costs everywhere it seems all good things must come to an end in some way or another. Some devs came out recently about how the Gamepass funding has "dried up" now relative to couple years ago. MS can't just rely on subscription revenue with the acquisitions of ex-multiplat publishers which relied heavily on multiplatform sales for most of their games. Something needs to change as the XS is selling worse than the X1 now for a while and MS knows it too because they have decided to port out their exclusives in order to fill in that revenue gap.

For said “some devs” it seems to be not the dev cost but the “dried up” funds seems to be more like their contracts being done.

Phil and other heads had said each GP contract is on a case by case basis.

Some devs have said that they get a lump some up front and additional funds per download and or play time. But could part of said stagnation be partly to blame on the dev and or publisher. Like communication with fans and advertising, keeping that messaging actives amd alive to gauge player interest and engagement, besides assumed patches and or dlc.

Besides the ps5 is selling worse than the ps4 now, that’s why they cut back their projected numbers.

The only one in the green is Nintendo, maybe even the Steamdeck, definitely the pc and mobile market as well…maybe?

Phil has been talking about sustaining growth. Maybe they realized their old ways weren't bringing in as much as they thought so they need to expand in other ways starting with sharing their exclusives to Nintendo and Sony.. back when acquisition rumours were going on, many had questioned how they could sustain the sales of Zenimax and Activision , we now know how they are starting off at least.

Dried knows that Game Pass is profitable (as is Xbox), and sustainable. He also knows that GP contracts vary and MS doesn’t fund most games on GP. He also knows that GP is only 10-15% of their game revenue and they said it won’t exceed that. He also knows that Activision was an asset move and was already a profitable company. MS doesn’t need to make up for that either.

What a load of nonsense.
