The Order: 1886 (Official Thread)

A lot of people also telling the truth in here and expressing their honest opinions, if you think that's trolling well then you're a moron.

As long as they've actually played the game I have no problem with someone coming in and voicing their opinion. It's when we get people coming in who've never played it and never had any intention of playing it talking about how they don't like the streams or commenting on the amount QTE's or cut scenes it's hard to take them seriously because it's obvious they are just spreading misinformation and not posting any kind of informed opinion.

Renting it today, looking forward to it but going in with an open mind.

What's basically happening is the opposite of Ryse. This time Playstation folks defending, Xbox folks making fun of. What's sad is people from both sides miss out on good games when they do this.

So you are saying it's reverse Rysism?

That's pretty damn clever.

Just finished it. What a game. It didn't feel that short at all to me. It's definitely the second coming of Uncharted: Drake's Fortune. That felt like 2007 all over again. Greatness awaited and now it's here. LOL at the hate for this game. Gamers are a sad bunch these days. Like really, the game was good. You can argue if it's an all time best game or not but it's a solid game no matter how you slice it. Ready at Dawn was ready and they didn't disappoint. The Order: 1886 is an early showcase of what awaits us on the PS4. Mission accomplished.

Glad to hear you liked it, TD.

Here's some entertainment. Who says the game has no replay value? You can replay it to see what happens when you fail the QT events.

Luckily I have messed up the quick time events enough that I have had the luxury of enjoying them the first time through. :)

I think this is a great review, he hits on a lot of the things I've been saying/thinking so of course I like it lol.

Did you watch the whole thing? lol

I did. I could have taken him more seriously if he didn't callout the other reviewers, suggesting that they may not be in the right profession.

Overall his review was a little generous imo. I haven't beaten the game yet (chapter 11) but at this point, I just want to get through it.

I think the other reviewers needed to be called out a bit, why judge a game based on what it's not? it should be reviewed based on the quality of what is included IMO.

I agree. But maybe they just didn't like what it is?

I'm sorry, but that guy reviewing comes across as amateur. How can you expect someone to respect your critique, when you label others as jackasses?

I remember in the good ol' days, they used to give different scores on value, gameplay, graphics and so on, and then give a score that wasn't an average. As long as people know what they're in for, that's fine. Reviews aren't the be-all-end-all determining factor.

If you're wary, as with any game, rent it, or buy it/return it. Buyers remorse is a harsh feeling, but its better on missing out on an experience that could be just what you need.

Reviews are a guide, but sometimes evengirl guides get lost!

So based on your impression, good 1886 reviews (rare) are the ones that reviewed the game for what is was, and bad reviews didn't review the game for what it was, and those bad reviews don't count?

I just want to make sure I understand your line of reasoning. Because if that is the case, there is a s*** load a games out there that have been reviewed wrong.

I just beat the game. I loved it overall. I'm not saying this because I'm blindly defending Sony either, I veer towards Xbox, more importantly I veer towards the games. I love great experiences like this.
As for the reviews? Increasingly I am out of touch with reviews today, it makes me miss the "review crew" of past egm. The cinemas didn't overtake the gameplay like Metal gear can. I bet if the metal gear games premiered today they would be torn apart! Being legacy titles though they like others will get higher reviews. (nothing on metal gear, I love those too.).
Even though this is a rental I will be purchasing this soon, I can't wait to reenter this world!

Well, I finally beat the game today. I have no idea how long it took. But with all the dying, maybe close to 10 hours? I played about 5 days at a couple hours per day, so that seems about right. The length felt about like what I experienced with Alan Wake which I loved and didn't find necessarily short.

I'll try to give it a review in a similar format to JinCa's guy.

Visuals

Let's start off with the obvious, visuals.
I'll be honest. At first I wasn't completely blown away. Obviously the graphics were good. But the softness of the environments and objects in it because of the filter and depth of field gave it a look that is unique but one hat you have to adjust to.

By the end of the game, I learned to appreciate the subtle approach they used to texture their world. Things that are supposed to be shiny are shiny. Things that aren't, aren't. Even for material like wood. Wooden book shelves with a high level of gloss shined. Floorboard that were weather beaten did shine, but were appropriately dull.

The fabric materials are second to none. Character clothing is just stupidly detailed. My favorite part regarding materials though was on the airship as our heroes repelled down the side of the ship/blimp. The canvas, or whatever material they use on blimps would crumple under their feet when they landed. Something simple that makes you smile for the detail put into the game.

Interior designs were pretty immaculate. Dinning rooms, kitchens, mansions, whatever were just incredible to looks at. Capcom needs to see what RAD did and emulate that for future Resident Evil games. Games can look RE Remake in full 3D. Not everything is destructible. But things that aren't necessary for cover seems to be shot up pretty good.

Characters are nearly perfect. The Lycan transformations looked really good.

Ok, enough babbling about visuals...there's so much to point out, but I give the visuals a 5 out of 5. Enough said.

Story

The underrated aspect of the game imo. I won't spoil or even try to explain what is going on. But I'll just say that I thought the story was great. I've seen big budget movies with less of a plot.
I'm not saying it's Oscar worthy or anything, or even as gripping or thought provoking as The Last of Us. But it was good.

There was a missed opportunity for choice at the end.

Gameplay

Gameplay was an up and down experience for me. Most of the game is very linear and feels like a shooting gallery. AI is not great for the most part. Grunts will hide behind cover and stay there and pop their little heads out on occasion. Also, when you do take one out, another will run to the same spot and behave the same way.

RAD increased the difficulty by employing others guys ( I'm terrible at remembering exact names for enemies) that have better weapons and they will run at you, well... they will run to the sides of you, to give the impression of being flanked. Then the next level baddie are the shotgun guys. They will advance on you, sometimes armored sometimes not. They can be pesky little bitches.

Then we have the big weapon guys. They primarily stand back and shoot grenades or thermite at you. Other lesser guys will sprinkle in hand tossed grenades as well.

overall the gunplay is fun. But feels cheapned in the way AI behaves. Also you pretty much always have cover. It never gets destroyed unless you advance further up into the playfield.

The dreaded QTE's lol. This was a mixed bag as well. I loved the qte boss fights. But I hated opening doors or overriding electrical circuits. But I understand why those things are there.
Some of the branching qte's were cool, but confusing as you have to focus on where it is you're supposed to line up the reticule to trigger the button prompt. Overall QTE's immersed me in the story and didn't get in the way as suggested from reviews and whatnot.

There are a few sneaking missions that are cool but undercooked. I would have liked more of those scenes and more fleshed out. Enemy AI in these were bad though. I practically just shot everyone without me or the dead bodies being noticed.

The Lycan battles ( Non QTE's) were just kind of there. No need to explain further.

Fun.

There was a stretch in the game where I wasn't having a lot of fun. But after Chapter 12, things picked up a lot. The story was coming together at that point, and enemy AI was better as your foe was more heavily trained. I won't spoil it.

Overall I'm glad that I got to experience the game. Just the amount of detail and work put into it is amazing.
The game has flaws as do many games that we enjoy. Watching the enemies react to being shot never got old. They did a great job with that.

Replay Value

I probably shouldn't give a score on replay value since I probably won't play it more than once. But I'll give it a score to round out my final score. 2 out of 5. I think it's time for some Majora's Mask via trade-in-value.

17 out of 25 is 68%. But I would say that I enjoyed it more than that number would suggest, at least the last part of the game.

Some of you will play the game multiple times. So that score will go up if you do.

I just think it's a mistake to keep bringing up other games in a review, I've seen gears brought up a bunch of times and this isn't a gears game and it's not just a cover based shooter either. I've seen it marked down for not having co op or MP but I don't think co op would have worked in this game the way it's structured but again some reviewers knocked it for not having it. I do think you should base a review on the quality of the title and not how it compares to other games, especially those that it's not really directly comparable to that's all.

I agree that games shouldn't be marked down for not having multiplayer. But I can see why some would be disappointed that it's not there. The base mechanics would be fun as a multiplayer game.

But if they added a separate DLC package later with maps designed for it. That would be a better approach than rushing out something just to say you have it.

That about says it all.

I'm enjoying it. I really love the art style and mood of the game. I don't mind the core gameplay, it is generic as hell, but not bad. However I am hating these QTE and how they are presented. It really takes away from the game in places. I'm at chapter 5 and some it feels like I am pushing myself to play it, but the story is the most interesting element overall.
The visuals are downright awesome, but the motion blur is annoying.
