The UnionVGF PS4 general impressions thread! Got a PS4? Share your impressions.

They originally said it were DLNA, but I think they've clarified it later on that streaming only works with Windows PC, and a MS-program called Play to, not other DLNA-compatible devices.
So if you want to start using Play To then you can stream, I think.

It's essentially killing the media extender of old and doing it the Windows 7/8 Way. You either use Play To or the applications that do it for you.

The old school way "Media Player / Shared Files / Streaming" still works. You can still locate PC's on your One.

Load times in general are annoying me on the console, and will be similar on Xbox One.

Trying my patience really.. just playing some COD:Ghosts "Squads" with my fiance last night and the rather small map takes ages to load.. it's just the catch 22 of RAM usage.

More RAM usage to render any given scene = longer load times.

I have my 2nd PS4 untouched at this point and I think I'm going to install an SSD right off the bat, but still not entirely undecided.

Engaged? Congratulations!

Got my PS4 like the UI I have only tried Resogun and didn't care much for it but will give it another try. I can't wait to play BF4 after it downloads in ten years.lol

I'm playing games on my PC with my PS4 controller while also playing games on my PS4 with my PS4 controller! Guess my secret! :D

The PS4 version of Flower is beautiful. Only did the first level, but I'm surprised by how much better it looks. Really pretty.

You plugged it into your PC via wire after turning it on your PS4 via Bluetooth?

Killzone looks remarkable. I don't like the controller though. Well, not the entire controller, but the Share/Options placement and shape. Why are they so low? Playing with the lights off and it's very ldifficult to find them on the controller. Why aren't they raised a little bit?

They are raised slightly at the very top. I'm glad they're that way to avoid hitting them when having to use the touchpad.

I agree, I was worried before I had the controller that the options button would be difficult to locate without looking but it's actually really easy since the top part of the button is raised.

Just bought 2K14 and NFS:Rivals on PSN. I spent so much money :(

Literally one click away with my credit card linked to my PS Account. They make it so easy the bastards.

Really? I'll be able to stream Anime and stuff to my console?
don't know if this is answered but yes.

You can't browse the files from your Xbox One but you can use your laptop/desktop whatever and push the files out to the X1. Did it today. Worked well.

Had a chance to play on a friends system today for a bit. While the games look fantastic (Killzone specifically) I just don't dig the design (looks like a squished oversized Wii to me) and just don't like the new controller. I preferred the DS3 to this by a mile. Overall this is a great system but just not for me.

I loved the 360 controller more than any other controller until the DS4. With the changes made, I don't really notice it feeling much different than a 360 controller in my hands. I absolutely hated DS controllers until getting to use the current one.

So, I downloaded Killzone yesterday.
Seems like Killzone, Fifa, AC4, NFS, Resogun and Contrast is available in the Norwegian digital storefront before their and PS4's official launch-date at November 29, if I recall correct, so that were pretty good.
I launched it and sat in the main-menu.

But I also got my new PC - since I'm working 12 hours days for two weeks I need to be effective with my spare-time to be able to both game and catch Z's, and drive to and from work - so I figured I could install the basics like AVG, Opera, Steam, LastPass, and set up my mailbox on my new PC, and start downloading X Rebirth, before trying the Killzone campaign.

I assumed I had the most of important stuff on my USB-stick like 6 email accounts - ready to go
Unfortunately, my new PC is running Windows 8, and Microsoft dosn't like third party email-addresses, it's basically impossible to import .iaf email-accounts wich is the only way to export from Windows Live Mail wich were standardemail-client in Windows 7, to Windows Mail app wich is standard on Win8.
And when I looked at Microsoft forum with other people with the same problem, they were basically told to use the outlook-email, or ask in a different forum, for the new mail-client, wich told them to look in the old forum for their old mail-client,
The new mail-app also fells exactly like a online mail-reader.. horrible..

Tried some migration-tool, unplugging my new pc, replugging in my old, transferring my email-accounts to the MS-cloud instead of the USB-stick, then plugging back into the new one, and import, but failed miserable.
Ended up finding a .iaf-decoder on a hacking website, and manually restoring all codes, to a third party mail-client like Opera-mail - have had great sucess with Opera before - so why not try their mail-stuff aswell... Never gonna use MS-mailclients ever again (and hopefully no other MS products) - they don't support their own products from one iteration to the next, allways wants all your data into their newest fancy, be it skydrive, outlook, live-mail, or now mail app.

Steam-os can't come soon enough.

Suffice to say, the only thing I got tested with my first day of PS4, were the setup-process, wich were super-easy, download, and the automatic shutdown, at my 4 hour time-limit idle in games, wich I sat.

KongRudi - I don't think you and I are really disagreeing here - read my response above. Obviously everyone wants to give everyone everything, but in the real world some things are prioritized above others, and not everything is available at launch, and not every feature is deemed as important enough to warrant the cost it would take to do it right.

Of course options for adjusting both speed and size are good, but to do so responsibly come at a cost. MS has bet that the bigger bang for the consumers buck (at least initially) is in making external storage super easy for them. I plan on getting a 2TB external drive for my box, personally... increasing the size easily was clearly the priority call over giving the tiny percentage of 'tinkerers' the option they'd want, which would be to replace the HDD with something not only larger, but faster... and I get that desire. I'm not one (personally) who would be willing to spend the time or the money to do something like that, considering the relatively tiny return on my investment (for both time and money), but I get why it's important to others... in any case, which would you personally prefer - more games/better games at launch, or the ability to swap out your hard drive at launch?

I know what my answer would be.

Increasing the speed of your hard drive should not need to be tested. It is a pretty simple change that should have consistent results. Near zero chance of it doing anything other than improving user experience. And it is an "at your own risk" feature as far as what result you'll get.

And designing a case to allow this one component to be replaced isn't difficult either.

Has yet to cause any security issues for Sony either.

Doesn't mean MS has to support it but I think you are exaggerating the effort if takes Sony to support this feature.

And really... Potential for fairly significant load time increases is only a small gain?

How can you type that honestly? So MS invests no effort in load times? Not a priority? Lol

So having both next gen consoles I definitely prefer the PS4 at this point. I've finally gotten used to the controller too. BF4 is amazing on PS4 and on Xbone I dont find Forza 5 to be all that impressive visually. Trigger rumble is sweet though.

Hoping I don't set off the Xbro alarms here, but while Forza 5 looks great and would definitely be a title I'd buy if I had an X1 right now, it's clear it was a rush job to get it ready for release. I don't fault MS or Turn 10 on this though as it's definitely a seller. That said, as I won't have an X1 until later next year I can either get F5 for really cheap by then or wait until F6 which I'm sure will be a more full featured title.

This is based off the Digital Foundry review of the game.

Both MS and Sony rushed their systems to meet a fall 2013 launch. OS's aren't done, Knack and KZ are lousy. KI and Forza have gimped content. Various other lousy games on both systems.

It's the typical launch paradox. Being the first kid on the block with a shiny toy is great, but shinier and more polished toys will come out next year.

Haven't played Knack yet but from reviews... lol. I still want to pick it up when it's cheaper. As for KZ I absolutely love it, but I'm also playing with blinders on as it's one of my favorite FPS series.

As for X1, for me personally I think Quantum Break will be the first must have title and could really show what the system is capable of.

I don't think any of these launch games show a glimpse of their potential. No different than any other launch. Launch games have some sizzle, but 3 years later it's a totally different ball game. I don't think even next years big hits like The Division, Titanfall, Destiny, Witcher 3 and such will be as impressive as 4-5 years from now.

Many of the launch games are simply games with better visuals, resolution or frame rates. The gameplay and features are basically not really any different than 360/PS3 games aside from some X1 drivatar stuff in F5.

The good thing about getting a launch system is that at least there's a slew of solid third party games to complement MS/Sony's first party games. In the past, many third party devs would release lousy launch titles. At least, X1/PS4 got some good editions of EA sports, CoD/BF, NFS, AC4 and some more I forget.

I agree with all you are saying hold the KZ is lousy part as I find it to be a very good 8.2/10 surely could of been much better...but thankfully will have much DLC to sweeten it a bit.
KI could of as well as it should of been 1080p...but that doesn't mean its not a great game(haven't played it but think it looks great)
Yup we got great 3rd party games and the 3rd party games are the best games for both platforms.

I got to play the PS4 and the XB1 yesterday, a friend got both systems w/Madden and BF4 for each system(?) and Forza 5.

From what I played yesterday on the PS4 I really liked it. What I really liked the most about the PS4 is the DS4 controller, finally a Sony controller that just about equals the previous/current XB controllers. The sticks feel great, the touchpad is in a user friendly position and the bumpers and triggers have great tactile feel to them, gone are the rubbery/spongy buttons from the DS3. The controller feels great in your hands, my only complaint, and its prolly a personal preference, is I like the asymmetric layout of the analog sticks on MS controllers better, other than that the controller is top notch!

The system itself was pretty easy to navigate and the system start up was quick as was game startup/resume, I'd say the XB1/PS4 are pretty on par with each other in this aspect. The PS4 was a little louder in operation than the XB1, no big deal though.

I only got to play Madden and BF4 on the PS4. Madden as far as I could tell was just about the same as on the XB1. BF4 was awesome, graphically it was a smidge better than the XB1, less jaggies/shimmer, though unless you go in looking for it you'll prolly not notice it. The increased resolution wasn't super noticeable though certain assets did look better. Definitely an awesome showcase for what next gen gaming is all about.

Overall I came away with a great impression of the PS4.. The system has some great specs and an awesomely re-designed controller in the DS4.
