Official Thread VR Headset

Yea but at that point how virtual is it? Just because you have screens strapped to your head that may be 3D doesn't really make it VR IMO.

IMO you have to be engaged and exert yourself for it to be VR, to walk you should be on that treadmill, to shoot, you should have a have gun peripheral in your hands where you have to legitimate sight up your targets, if not, you're just playing a video game where the screens are strapped to your face.

You sound like you've never tried out the Rift. I have, and can unequivocally state that Rift is an unbelievable experience. It's legitimate VR.

It is...very virtual? Is reality not reality when you are sitting down in real life all the sudden because you're not walking around or shooting a gun? This is the dawn of VR and there still are problems to be solved, but you can look around in a 3d world now. Think about it, when you have the headset on, everything in-game is to scale in full stereo 3d just like how we perceive the real world. That does not interest you at all? I mean, input is an issue right now but Oculus is working on it. For now, I'll use my 360 gamepad, G27 wheel, kb/m, flight stick and enjoy the hell out of it until input evolves more. But to say VR is not VR without being able to replicate every physical interaction as in the real world is not very fair.

I realized how awesome this could be when watching a vid a member posted a while back where people tried it out on a simulation of a roller coaster and they were leaning to and fro and some nearly fell down because of the immersion, this is something that doesn't happen when looking at a static screen in front of you.
I think this could kill off the need for TV's and Monitors for gaming in the future if it can be made light enough not to be too fatiguing anyway.

I imagine what it would be like to play a game like skyrim or FO3 and experiencing the world by simply looking about , then add a mock gun or sword peripheral that can be tracked with something like the Kinect and boom !

You mean videos like this? lol

And I agree with you too about making monitors/TVs/phones obsolete in 10-20 years when they are the size of regular glasses without needing to be tethered to a PC. Why have a 3 monitor setup on your desk when you can have a 100 monitor setup in VR while in the middle of a rainforest with your friends around you? Really does have the potential to revolutionize our way of life. I see VR now as cell phones were back when they were the brick sized hunk of tech back in the day. Exciting times ahead!

LOL, Exactly.
That wasn't the same vid but it demonstrated the same thing.
Love the way that guy freaked out when he was pushed, see if that happens when watching a wall sized HD screen ..Nope.

Here's a cool little video that shows the dk2 screen filmed through the lens. Its recorded with an iphone so the quality is pretty bad but it's the only video like this that I've seen.

Hopefully Oculus announces the shipping dates soon. The wait is almost over.

I see what you're saying and somewhat agree. Just because you have a screen 2 inches from your face doesn't mean you're in the game. To me the perfect VR will be when we can think that we are actually in the game and our thoughts control our actions. Obviously, that's at least a couple years out. Until that time though, I think this is as good as it's going to get. I think this does look awesome even if it's not sci-fi VR.

I cant wait to try one out in Star Citizen. I watched some guy on YouTube walking around his hangar when they first released support for the OR and he was saying how massive the ships looked and made him feel like he was actually walking around his ship.

I understand what some people are saying regarding actually walking/running around with peripherals in hand would be the ultimate VR experience but the OR as it stands now is already achieving Presence and if I can get the experience that I'm actually standing/sitting in that world then that's good enough for me.
Last generation as a console gamer the mp experience totally blew my mind but that's wearing a bit thin now, I see the OR as the new thing that will take my gaming experience to the next level, as someone who was born in the late 70's and a child growing up in the 80's, this is something I've been daydreaming about for a long time. Super excited and will definitely picking up the consumer version day one.

My offer still stands btw, when I get my DK2 and someone once to drive to NE Ohio to check it out let me know and I'll be happy to give you a demo and not drug you then take advantage...probably.

Can this thing be used as a monitor? For example, if something did not support it, you could still use them maybe without the 3d effects or whatnot? I think it would be cool if it just functioned as a large screen with darkness around it for immersion while playing a game or watching a movie. Then, for games/movies that did support it, it would be even better.

There are quite a few programs available now that offer similar functionality. Two popular ones are Riftmax theater and VR cinema. Both are virtual movie theaters where you can watch videos stored on your pc or streamed both in 2d and in 3d if the movie has it available. The VR cinema developer was even hired by Oculus last year so it will be one of their included first party apps. Supposedly it is pretty amazing as it really feels like your sitting in your own private theater with a 100 foot screen. Riftmax allows multiplayer too so you can get together with your buddies in the virtual theater to watch a movie. They even just released a 4d effects editor. Basically since its a virtual theater you can add custom effects to the theater that add to the video. Imagine a shootout scene where bullets are flying into the theater and striking the seats and walls around you or watching Frozen and having snow and ice fill up your theater. It really has the potential to become the best way to watch movies. There is also a few vr gaming rooms built around emulators for playing old school nintendo games.

Virtual desktops as a productivity tool are a little further out but in the long run I could also see this being a huge market. For example, imagine a virtual desk where you can decide how many monitors you want. You could go with 1 massive virtual screen or with 2 or 4 or be completely surrounded by virtual screens. They could also offer different environments so your virtual desk could be on Mars, in a jungle, or at the top of a mountain. I think it could do a lot to make work more enjoyable, especially for those stuck in cubicles.

Well, I went ahead and ordered one (dev kit 2). I just really want to try one out. I also don't feel like waiting another year for the consumer version, and if it does come out earlier than I expected, this one looks "close enough" that I might be able to keep using it for a while. I think the quality will be good enough to enjoy it. Since this new one has better resolution and reduces motion blur/sickness, it should be fine for now.

I think it said new orders aren't shipping until September. Oh well. On the bright side, maybe it will give people more time to refine the software for it and get the bugs out.

Awesome, congrats! I really believe we are on the cusp of something big here. Think of it like this...the later we get the rift, the more content there will be for us to experience! :)

I personally enjoyed ready player one more but both are great. Also, minecraft can be played in multiplayer in vr. So that'll be great fun.

Well I just finished Ready Player One. Really great book and so addicting I ended up finishing it in 2 days. Got me all hyped up about the Rift again with its depiction of the endless possibilities of VR. It was also a little scary how plausible a company like IOI seemed with the recent Comcast-TWC merger and "internet fastlanes" controversy. Anyway thanks for recommendation. Enjoyed it a lot.

Oculus VR announces inaugural "Oculus Connect" developer conference
http://www.techspot.com/news/57329-...ural-oculus-connect-developer-conference.html

Virtual reality pioneer Oculus VR on Monday announced Oculus Connect, a developer conference designed to bring engineers, designers and creative minds from around the globe under one roof to share and collaborate in the interest of virtual reality.
In a blog post on the matter, the company said attendees will be the first to learn about upcoming Oculus technology through sessions and workshops led by Oculus engineers and industry pioneers. Devs will also have the opportunity to receive design and engineering feedback in hands-on labs.
The event will be led by keynotes from Brendan Iribe (CEO), Palmer Luckey (Founder), John Carmack (CTO) and Michael Abrash (Chief Scientist) - or in other words, pretty much every big name in VR will be there.
The inaugural event will take place September 19-20 at the Loews Hotel in Hollywood, California. Oculus said the full session list will be announced as we inch closer to the event.
Those interested in attending can submit their applications starting July 10 with confirmations going out the following week. Note that while it is open to the public, space is limited and this is a developer-centric event. Oculus VR also reserved a block of rooms at the hotel so registered guests will enjoy a discount during their stay.
In the event you can't make it to the show, the keynotes will be livestreamed around the world. Full details can be found on the Oculus Connect website.

Yeah I don't understand where people are coming from who are saying "RIP Oculus" because of the Facebook acquisition. It's now owned by arguably one of the most powerful companies in the world.

As long as they keep to their vision of an affordable experience, I'm all for it. It should definitely become a thing now!

300 bucks Facebook, 300 bucks.

I wouldn't doubt if they came out with multiple tiers of it, tbh.

First batch of new DK2s are shipping now. Unfortunately I'm not in first batch. :( Should have it within a month though!

Yup me too. I waffled back and forth for a few days before ordering on March 23rd. Now I'm kicking myself for not ordering right away.

I can only imagine how awesome this thing would be on road trips or business trips. You can pretty much take your own private cinema with you as long as it could interface with your phone.
