What is Your GOTY 2018?

I don't know. The game I enjoyed the most was Yakuza Kiwami, but that was a remake of a game that came out a long time ago. Otherwise, I'd have to go with God of War, although I wasn't as enthusiastic about it as a lot of people were. I haven't played a couple of the big ones from this year (Spidey and RDR2).

I think Astro Bot: Rescue Mission deserves a lot more hype.

Yeah, it definitely sounds like VR GOTY.

Dark10x from DF named it one of his favorites.

I also saw this yesterday (cued up to Astrobot):

I was a VR hater but quality games like Astro Bot changed my mind. Sony launched VR with too many tech demos now gamers think it's not worth it. That why all the good games on VR this year get over looked.

Yeah, and with stuff like Ace Combat and Kingdom Hearts VR coming next year, it's looking good for 2019, too. I look forward to seeing what they evolve it into for next gen.

In terms of total package, trying to be objective I’d say God of War. The gameplay was better than the story. I liked the tighter game design than other open worlds.

My personal GOTY is Dark Souls Remastered. I assume it doesn’t count because it’s an unimpressive remaster of a last gen game. This was my first full playthrough and it’s the best single player game I played in 2018.

Dead Cells was my runner up. The most addictive single player game that was new in 2018.

Red Dead 2 just never clicked with me. I feel like I’m punching in for a job when I load it up...and I try to grind a little further every couple days hoping it’ll start to feel different.

After finishing AC:O, I think I'll withdraw my nomination. As I'm finishing these GOTY candidates, I'm seeing average to good games out of them, not great games. Still need to finish Spiderman and start God of War.

I think VR will catch steam when everything improves and you don't see a lot of wires.

Well, that wraps it - the guy who is the coach of a team that's winning just over 25% of their games says it's Fortnite so... it's anything but Fortnite.

Well he did manage to climb to the absolute pinnacle of his profession, but let's ignore that for now.

Regardless, it belies the point Fizdale made. Fortnite is now a game that multimillion dollar athletes are choosing to play over going out or even sleeping. There has never been a game with this level of impact.

Old paradigm games like RDR2 and GoW are simply not engaging enough to have this type of effect on people because they play to the mediums weaknesses as opposed to it's strengths. Storytelling vs story generation.

The next five years will mark a clear delineation between old paradigm games and new paradigm games, all thanks to Fortnite.

If that's not GotY, I don't know what is.

I am not convinced Sunset isn't a Fortnite Troll. Seriously. It's not possible to be truly up one games ass... is it?

Hitman 2 is just behind RDR2 for me.

6 levels will put some off but you have so many ways of completing them it's got a crap load of replay value.

Has some key gameplay improvements and to top it off all those features and upgraded graphics carry over to season 1 for those that own it.

Looks really nice in 4K as well. Only let down would be the non animated cutscenes

I'm not even sure if you are paid or if you are pushing a video game in this unhealthy fashion for free... if you aren't getting money for this, I truly recommend seeking professional help, your family must be worried.

We could have leant into this with our choice of game of the year and picked a game that captured the zeitgeist and pointed the way to the future. (We very nearly did: see 'The other game of the year', below.) We could have picked one of those surviving bastions of Big Gaming, a God of War or a Red Dead, because the scale of craftsmanship they display is often extraordinary to behold, but our hearts wouldn't have been in it. These games stirred admiration in us, but not passion.

Instead, our choice for game of the year is a game to cut through all this noise and make a nonsense of all this talk. It's a game of utter purity, a contemporary take on a timeless classic, and a genuinely inspiring and uplifting experience. It doesn't care about the zeitgeist, because it is, in itself, the history and the future of video games rolled into one. It's Tetris Effect.

As I'm finishing items off my 2018 backlog, I'm leaning toward, Ni No Kuni 2 and God of War as my GOTY. God of war is just epic in every way, even if Kratos is still an unlikable ass. And Ni No Kuni 2 is about as close as I'm going to get to a next gen Suikoden with Konami still squatting on the IP.
