What's the buzz in real life?

Plenty of ways to gauge interest outside of polling a Teamxbox forum. Lots of online and offline polls (one of which was semi scientific by Reuters), weekly and yearly sales charts on the world's largest online retailer and third largest any retailer (Amazon), online auction sites such as eBay to see what the preorder prices are being sold for, etc. Hint: one console is winning all of these pretty soundly. BTW if you think COD players don't have the internet and don't spend at least a few minutes reading reviews or deciding with their friends what the superior version to get I have a bridge to sell you. The PS4 version is already outselling the X1 version on Amazon.

The OP isn't asking about stuff on the internet, though. He's asking about the opinions of people around you -- family, friends, acquaintences, etc.

My friends (four) and I are getting PS4s. Two have a 360 and PS3; the other two just PS3s. No one is getting an X1 at this point, but I am pretty sure one of my friends will when Halo comes out.

My nephews--ages 16 and 13--have a 360 and PS3. Only interested in PS4.

That's all I know.

I think the last console release came when there was a huge buzz about HD - TV, video, cable... everything was going HD and people were excited about that and these gaming systems took full advantage of their new TVs. Cables and movies weren't there yet so these systems literally ushered HD into people's homes.

Now HD is commonplace. 'HD' has been run through the ringer to market everything so nobody gets excited about it anymore and frankly the next gen is not the same jump it was last gen. They only people getting excited are gamers and even there you see this disparity between both consoles and the PC that never existed before. For the first time in history a moderately priced PC is running games better than either console.

If you showed the IGN Battlefield video to most regular people, the one comparing ps3, 360, ps4 and xbo, I think you would get shrugs. A vast majority would struggle to see a $400/$500 difference between this gen and the next gen, let alone see a difference between PS4 and XBO. Same thing will happen when they stand in a store watching demos if there is no fan boy at their side pointing out the unobvious and unimportant.

I don't think Microsoft or Sony needs to fear the comparisons between their new consoles, but their old. Same games (at launch) with only modest visual improvements is not going to sell a lot of new hardware. Not saying both systems wont sell out, they will. Gamers alone will easily gobble up the paltry first manufactured batch of both systems. Most are calling PS4 to outsell XBO but I am not sure. I think the buyers are there for the first few months no matter what. I think its the supply chain that will dictate who wins the launch round and at this point there is no indication what those supply chains looks like.

I think we need to wait for all this to mature. A year from now the games out on PS4/XBO wont be on the current gen . We will also have a solid grasp on all the other features beyond 'pixels' as well as and issues or shortcomings. Next Christmas is going to be were things start to become clear.

well people I spoke with said they are staying with Xbox because they already invest money in many things beside games and all their friends are on XBOX. They are not going to split up their friends.

Those are going to the PS4 are people who are cheap and dont spend a dollar on anything.

Not going to touch that one.

So from what I'm mostly seeing in here is:

PS4 fans claim everyone they know is getting a PS4.
X1 fans claim everyone they know is getting an X1.

More like people who buy ps4 are
Wiser.
More powerful and lower priced.
See I can play this with you.

Like this gen its a mix of people getting XBox or PS for me with it slightly more in XBox's favor.

No one even talks about the Wii U.

real people who do NOT read gaming forums etc
moms and pops?? who do not buy at gamestop, but buy at walmarts etc

Xbox one, it is different, can do more with it
High prices can increase perception of value

You know what else high prices do? They make people do some research before dropping that much cash on something. What happens when mom/pop takes 5 minutes to research these pricy machines and learns that the $400 machine does most of what the $500 machine does? What happens when they spend 5 more minutes and learn that the last consoles these two released had the Sony product with a low defect rate and the MS product with such a high defect rate that RROD became a meme and that MS had to publicly acknowledge it along with offering free repairs and shipping?

Your post basically says "My friends are going XB because their friends are there so they're not going to get a PS4 as well, but those that only get a PS4 are cheap".

Also, cheap like me? I"m only getting a PS4 but I'll be spending nearly $3k on my new PC rig in the next 2 months.

Nice try though, that whole "you must be a poor loser to choose PS4 only" tactic.

Well that's kinda why they are still available.
Huh, yeah if pre-orders aren't selling then they would be available, was saying that if there was already an abundance of available pre-orders there is no logic to open up even more available pre-orders that are likely not to sell.

Yeah perhaps I am misreading the context lol. I read it as MS opened up more pre orders because the orders they already had were not selling.

It seemed like he was saying that, but we have no idea if that's really what he heard. Could be, but there are counter examples like yours and mine. Most likely he was just jeering.

Yeah reading it again I can see it meaning MS opened up new pre-orders and they are not selling.

My siblings and I are split right down the middle. 3 of us are getting an X1 at launch and the other 3 are getting a PS4 at launch. We'll all get the other respective next gen console next year or so.

A friend and I are getting PS4 only switching from owning both 360 and PS3 this gen. My other friends are all getting PS4 either to flip or keep. Noone I know is getting an Xbox One... yet.

Guys I worked with were pretty bitter about Microsoft's initial DRM policies on the Xbox One and were not swayed when they did a 180.
They're all getting PS4.

other then my brothers, I don't know anybody else getting a xb1.

I have 1 friend buying an XB1, everyone else is getting PS4 thanks to kinect.
