Windows 8.1

Ok. So I can not get FIFA 14 to play under Windows 8.1:smash: Was working fine in Win 7. Compatibility modes ain;t doing jack. :( Hope AC4 works.

I keep getting a blue screen saying Windows ran in to a problem and needs to restar, but it never collects any info. It says it is a Kernal inpage error or something like that. I have scanned HDD's with Chkdsk and no problems. I also scanned my RAM for issues and had none.

Anybody got any ideas ?

Well you just ran into something that shouldn't happen. Friend bought Windows 8 laptop two years ago and a week ago he encountered his first ever bluescreen on it, and that's not even a norm.

Which makes me think it's a hardware issue. What were you doing when the computer crashed? I've seen some crashing while browsing, this usually happens with Firefox or indicates that something is wrong with GPU, or your PSU is having a power shortage.

Does anybody know how to remove how it now requires a Password or Pin Code to access my profile after upgrading to Windows 8.1 I did it when it first came out, but it's been bugging me. Also, my Lock Screen won't let me change the picture, it's stuck on an ugly one. I've done numerous Google searches for these questions, but nothing seems to ever help me.

I have had the BSOD rather frequently and it happens at random times. This particular time I wasn't doing anything, it was just left on the desktop and when I came back it had the BSOD. Other times it has gone when browsing the web, playing a game, watching some kind of video. Just random.

All my hardware is in perfect working order. All the cables and such are nice and tight. ChkDsk was good. Ram test were good. Windows is managing my filepage stuff. All my hardware drivers are up to date. I have ran out of Ideas.

If all else does not work, you might have to rely on PC reset. But sounds like one of your hardware might be faulty or too old to be properly supported by newest OS, that's when what you have described usually happen. So if you have anything that runs on legacy driver maybe you should remove that hardware (though reading between the line this seems doubtful). Also be sure to remove Firefox if you use that one, since combined with Flash player it frequently crashes certain PCs. Lastly, I have encountered similar situation some time ago back in Windows 7, but what is your VGA card? Certain models might be susceptible to the same problem I have encountered with HD4870.

So I guess you do know how to access that, right? In the PC setting app in Metro mode. Sounds like you are not asking for that, and the problem is even when you change the setting it's just not changing. Well in that case, be sure to deregister PCs that are not in use. I don't remember where you do it, must be on Microsoft account setting on the web, but sounds like it's a synching problem where old, not-in-use hardware takes priority and ignores all the changes from the PC you are using right now.

Pretty sure Faulty hardware is not the cause. I had no issues on W7, but had this issue almost immediately after installing W8. Old Hardware though, very possible.I running an old Quad core Q8200 and still on DDR2 Memory. My GPU is an ATI 6950 2GB.

Well there goes an easy answer. But anyways, 4870 which I had was a very big and hot chip with hot VRM, and with a blower cooler, apparently the cooling wasn't great either, so it started acting up like crazy after 3 years. At first I couldn't pinpoint the problem because the issues were flying around everywhere, but in the end games and GPU-accelerated browsing were two biggest culprits of BSOD and reset by a very small margin, so when I changed it to 6870 everything just disappeared. So when I read your case, first thing that came to mind was VGA.

But 6950 is a much more stable card, so the hardware itself wouldn't go crazy at once like that. First I would recommend reverting to oldest Catalyst driver possible. Recent ones focus on 7000/Rx200 GCN cards so it may not work really well with old VLIW4 architecture. Windows 8 drivers would still work well with 8.1, so find the driver that works best with HD6000 series and go back to that. Q8200 also sounds worrying, not because of CPU, but because Intel's support for mainboard chipset isn't that great either. That could be running on a legacy driver, not sure as a Phenom II user though. In this case, it would be good to find out if those using the same CPU and mobo chipsets are suffering from same problems.

Windows 8 has a lot of compatibility issues with games. I know I can't run several games in fullscreen mode without my usual framerate being cut down to a tenth. I'll played a game at 60fps on W7, but on W8, I get 3fps in fullscreen mode. And I don't like playing in windows mode.

I'll give the out of date drivers for the GPU ago and see if that does anything. My GPU is fine though, stable temps, is on of the Twin Frozr models from MSI so is well cooled.

I actually got it working perfectly for a good while, but for some reasons it doesn;t want to work today. Every time I try to load a career or play a game it just goes to desktop. Grrrrr.

I think I may just go back to W7. Life was so much simpler.

Well no way that MSI card would burn because of high temps. Windows 8 as a whole is a very stable and fast OS, but I've seen quite a few people who stumbles on instability. Come to think of it, something must be wrong with certain drivers, and something tells me it has to do with Intel's terrible drivers. Happened with my slate back in 8.1 preview actually. Good luck.

Yes, that is the problem. I change things & it never applies. You'd have to direct me where to do the other online thing you were talking about. This is the only computer I've had this Windows 8 on, it shipped with Windows 7 I believe, then I paid to upgrade to 8, then obviously got the free Windows 8.1 update from their store.

Here another question.

Any way to snap both desktop and metro together ? I want to to read a book via metro's PDF reader, but also need to be on desktop too to easily follow along. any way to do this ? I like the PDF via Metro more than Adobe's desktop variant.

Yes. Just go to top of desktop and drag it down, you can resize the desktop into a snap window.

Hello guys, I do not want to start a new thread, but anyone can recommend the best Windows 8 base Tablet, & must have stylus support?

Is Surface pro the best?

It depends on what you want. If you want the lightest ultrabook that is also one of the fastest of the bunch, Surface Pro 2 is the way to go. If, on the other hand, you want a real tablet that is light, easy to hold, with some sacrifice in terms of performance (though there isn't all that much difference in terms of general use), you might want to try Dell Venue 8 Pro or Lenovo Thinkpad 8. Venue 8 Pro is cheap like dirt with a relatively low-res screen but is still such a steal for its price, and if you want a high resolution screen you can go with Thinkpad 8.

Edit: Oh so you need a stylus as well. Thinkpad 8 is out of option then. Venue 8 Pro has stylus but it's not Wacom it's Synaptics. The first rendition was horrible but the new one seems usable for note taking and stuff. Asus VivoTab Note 8 supports Wacom stylus, but the battery is smaller.

I just reinstalled/rebooted Windows 8, and it was a pain. Why can't we just update through the Microsoft website instead of using the buggy/broken Metro PC Settings? I have had to constantly use the Troubleshooting option available in the Control Panel to get updates to download and install and still wasn't even guaranteed success from then. And by default, even for default Windows 8.1 systems, all files will open in Metro applications. It was no fun, and it was a lot of time and a lot of googling just to get it all working right. I can't wait for Bill Gates to have his influence on the company take effect again.

Thanks for the detail explanation. Appreciated it.

I have a surface 2 pro and it is awesome, if comes with a stylus, i havent used it yet but other people i have talked to that do use it often say it works great. The only downside is the surface pro 2 is little on the heavy side but the 2 position kickstand definitly comes in handy. I would say the surface pro 2 is the best windows 8.1 tablet out there now. Also not sure if u are interested but it can play pc games pretty good on it. I have steam installed and play borderlands 2,skyrim, kingdoms of amalur regularly on it. I would suggest getting the type cover for it too if u do pick the surface pro.

Sorry, but I deiced to forgo a tablet & get a new PC rig instead. But thanks for the info.

Personally never really cared that they got rid of the Start menu, but it'll be back soon. Looks pretty nice!

Hey now, there might be a catch to it we don't know yet. I still remember when Microsoft trolled us with the whole "we are bringing the Start Button back!" lol

Well they didn't lie. ;) The button is back and now they're slowing bringing back the menu.
