Xbox Rumors and Speculation

Courtesy of Resetera, one more rumor.

According to Klobrille (first guy to report the Playground buyout and Obsidian offer) says that Microsoft is considering IO. This one is pretty vague but Klobrille usually only says something when he finds strong smoke.

IO seems like a good two way match on many fronts. After Hitman bombed, my guess is IO’s last hope of staying alive is a buyout and Microsoft may be offering their devs the most independence of the major publishers right now. I’d be happy for that studio. Would suck to see 300 talented people loose jobs after 2 solid games due to mistakes from their publishers.

IO would be a better pick up IMO than Compulsion Games was. More established and better pedigree studio.

I think the title is a little misleading, but I like the sounds of this:

Microsoft is Offering Unlimited Budget to Newly Acquired Studios for Xbox Exclusives

Microsoft is a giant corporation with unlimited resources. Still, the company lost the battle to Sony in the game market. It was mainly due to a lack of exclusive titles on Xbox One and Xbox One X. The quality of games provided by PS4 remained unmatched throughout this generation.

The plethora of games offered by Sony Studios led PlayStation 4 sales to close in on 100M. Microsoft has accepted second place for Xbox One and the company is looking to the future, looking to Xbox Scarlett. How can Microsoft redeem its brand and bring back the audience it lost to PS4? A change of strategy is required that this exactly what the company is doing.

With Xbox One and Xbox One X, Microsoft spent little to nothing on first party studios. The focus remained on buying exclusive deals from third-parties to boost Xbox One’s appeal. Sadly, that didn’t work so well but Microsoft has realized what it needs to do. As we head closer to Xbox Scarlett release date, Microsoft is focusing on Xbox exclusives by boosting its first-party studio line up.

The Redmond giant has acquired many studios recently and it aims to make their “wildest dreams come true.” Microsoft is reportedly throwing large sums of money at these newly acquired studios for Xbox exclusives development. During a recent podcast, renowned Youtuber Boogie2988 recalled a conversation he had with Mike Ybarra of Microsoft.

During the conversation, Boogie asked Mike “why would Microsoft buy so many studios at the end of a console generation.” The reason is pretty simple, dominating the next generation. Speaking about the studios they bought, Ybarra basically implied the following, according to Boogie:

He (Mike) said we basically went in there to those companies and said: “what project do you wanna make?” And they are like “what’s our budget?” And he’s “I don’t think you understand, that’s not our question, our question is what games do you want to make? We are Microsoft and we have the budget, we just want to know what game you want to do, what are your wildest dreams”.

It sounds like Microsoft is going to use its financial power to possibly create the biggest Xbox exclusives line up for Xbox Scarlett. This explains why Microsoft is silent about what’s to come from these studios, they are not announcing anything for Xbox One at the moment, and all preparations seem to be for the eventual release of Xbox Scarlett.

The release date for Xbox Scarlett is still two years away, at least. Sony is also rumored to be sharing its next-gen plans at PlayStation Experience 2019. Both companies are ready to go toe to toe, it is definitely going to be an interesting battle this time around. Sony’s strong first party line VS Microsoft’s unlimited resources provided to newly acquired studios.

Cool, the MS Game Studios has a new look:

It's probably not happening but a PlatinumInsomniacRemedy would be an E3 reveal megaton that would break the livestream.

If and when MS were to purchase another studio, say this year or early next, do you think they’ll hold off till E3?

It’d be cool, but there’d be so many leaks just blueing us till then.

Anyways I’m hoping for some neat reveals at the VGAs

There have been leaks, but they managed to keep Ninja Theory's acquisition for example a secret.

MS have the stage at E3 this year, (literally) with Sony skipping this one. It's the perfect time to drop a bomb like that.

Cool. Yeah, Ninja Theory seem to have a visionary, original and dedicated team. That's refreshing. I can see why he might feel inspired. I could imagine feeling that way, if I worked there -- especially under these new circumstances, which have kind of set them free to pursue their ambitions unfettered, rather than constantly worrying about the wolf at the door.

Not that there was any reason to assume Microsoft was done...

But Benji, a verified US Sales Insider at Resetera responded to a statement about buying more studios with “they are coming”.

Again not breaking news. Just more confirmation that question should be “who” and not “if”. This was on the heels of Nadella reiterating continued investment in gaming as a focus for the company at the investor call that’s been summarized today.

MS's investment into the Xbox brand really is exciting. You know they are not going anywhere and are going all in.

Correct me if I'm wrong (which is like...hardly ever) but Microsoft is the first American company to successfully enter the gaming realm and make this kind of impact without folding?

I agree, yup! Microsoft is probably the most exciting company right now out of the Big 3.

Atari was an American company too.

Not for nothing, and this isn't an attempt to fan console wars but, I swear I predicted this s*** was gonna happen. After MS released the X, I mentioned that they were working in steps. First, Live, then the hardware and finally they were going to remedy the software situation once and for all. All those who kept saying, "Xbox has no games." I kept telling those same people that, what was coming, they brought on themselves. And here we are...

Microsoft 'investing aggressively' in gaming says Satya Nadella

Microsoft is going all-in with gaming.

A few days ago, Mat Piscatella, an industry analyst with The NPD Group, said that the Xbox One X was "performing phenomenally" this year. NPD tallies game and console sales in North America. This news came after Microsoft announced that it had acquired acclaimed developers like Playground Games, Obsidian Entertainment, and inXile Entertainment. This aggressive expansion is unprecedented for the company, and seems to indicate a desire to go for market leadership, especially when it comes to gaming subscription services like Xbox Game Pass.

According to a report by WCCFtech, Microsoft head Satya Nadella discussed the company's gaming ambitions during the yearly shareholders meeting. The report added that Nadella talked about the company's plans to aggressively invest in content and cloud services for gaming. He said that he was "pursuing an expansive opportunity from the way games are created and distributed." You can read an excerpt below.
In gaming, we're pursuing an expansive opportunity from the way games are created and distributed, to how they're played and viewed. We're investing aggressively in the content, community, and cloud services across every endpoint to expand the usage and deepen engagement with gamers, including the 57 million monthly Xbox Live users. Finally, we added seven new gaming studios to bolster the first-party content for fast-growing gaming services like the Xbox Game Pass subscription service as well as Mixer.

It's great to see that Microsoft is committed to the Xbox division. Hopefully we'll see quality first-party exclusives on the level of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and God of War soon. WCCFtech added that another Microsoft representative further emphasized the company's committed to this space. You can read the comments below.
Today, four billion people are connected to the internet and over two billion play games online. Over the next decade we're going to continue to create amazing content and games, invest in the cloud, and build communities that allow anyone to participate. We have a mix of incredible games for people of all ages, but we want to make it easier to discover new games and play them either on your Xbox or your PC.
Hopefully this will be a fruitful endeavor for Microsoft going forward. We desperately want quality content. In order to sustain this growth, the company needs to make sure that it always has "the most powerful console in the world" during any given generation. Hopefully its long-rumored "Xbox Scarlett" will maintain this advantage. We should know more about it at E3 2019 in June.

Remedy and Insomniac! Gotta get those two and their destiny will be complete. Not to mention with those two mentioned, MS would have a powerhouse in development studios.

I don't think they'll get Insomniac, for reasons I mentioned earlier.

Remedy? Maybe, I guess, although my sense is that the QB partnership wasn't all that lucrative, and MS and Remedy probably want to both go in different directions. But, you never know.

Insomniac just has too much of their value tied to Sony. Its not going to happen.

Remedy just doesn't make sense. They parted ways for a reason.

It makes plenty of sense. The fact that Microsoft is giving these studios creative freedom this time around to make what they want could make this work for both parties. Financial and technical backing without any of the uncertainties / back and forth regarding Alan Wake or QB they had in the past.
