Sales Comparisons v. 1.9

Kaz announced on stage at the CES conference that the PS4 sold OVER 18.5 million units worldwide to consumers as of Jan 4th. How can this have been any clearer? If you are lost in regards to this, its because you choose to be.

But what if North Korea kidnapped the real Kaz and in his place put a doppelganger?

That person could say anything.

Although it wouldn't get past Kreten.

Analytics! Stolen from GAF, naturally:

"Strategy Analytics predicts that by 2019, Sony will have a global installed base of 80 million PS4s. That would give the company a 40 percent edge on the firm's projected 57 million worldwide installed base for the Xbox One. As far as comparisons to historical systems, the firm notes that the PS4's 18.5 million units shipped in the first year on sale is much closer to the pace of the dominant PS2 (20.1 million) than the initially disappointing PlayStation 3 (10.5 million)."

"Looking at the Xbox One, the system's 12.4 million systems shipped for the first year surpassed the initially supply-constrained Xbox 360's first-year performance of 10.4 million units. However, the report noted that the Xbox One has suffered from some of the same challenges the PS3 faced, like a higher price point than its competition."

"As for the Wii U, Strategy Analytics acknowledged its anemic 5.9 million in first-year shipments, but added the system has been "staging a modest comeback" on the strength of first-party software."

It still baffles me even today that Nintendo, without any major advantages, were able to go toe to toe with this mammoth (Sony) and still pull ahead -- once with their console and completely unstoppable in the handheld market. As much flak as these guys get, i have to say that i have nothing but respect for them.

It needs to get up to a 65% edge so it can reach super console status. The industry works better in that type of situation.

Consider it done. The PS4 will shatter sales records. Greatness awaits.

I would say it's because they still are a very Japanese cultured corp. That's why they are getting destroyed, at least on the console side, in most if not all markets. They really do understand the handheld market better than anybody, but damn am i going to be bummed if the next 3ds or whatever is still using a sub-hd screen. They release a ton of japanese oriented games for the 3ds.

Sony has become very westernized in the last 15 years, especially on the gaming side of things.

Nintendo is not that small and the whole company is more focused on videogames than sony is for now.

Net worth

Nintendo 16.62 billion

Sony 20.15 billion

Nintendo are still a giant in this industry and cannot be written off.

They have $4.8 billion in cash and deposits from their last balance sheet and are now back in profit. Their frugal saving during the peak profitable years of Wii and DS meant they could absorb recent losses.

They have had the most disastrous home console in their history for sales in the Wii U but I would never undermine them as a 'plucky underdog'.
