Sony is the one with all to lose here, every inch MS gains is huge for sony. Sony already admitted the PS brand is their new frontrunner of the company, it has to be now. For MS, Xbox one could completely dominate PS4 and still the console wouldn't be their bread and butter, they are truly a corporate giant unlike sony and they could survive without xbox easily.
If MS really wanted to beat sony they would buy them and stop PS4 production tomorrow. They'd piss off everyone in the process and would win this gen but would lose the next gen(s) because one if not all of these 3 Google, Amazon, apple would come out with a console. Then MS's xbox division would have a reason to worry.

MS not squashing sony is in their best interest by keeping these others @ bay. They wouldn't dare throw a console in the mix knowing the losses they would have to endure to compete against both ms and sony.

Calling a Fortune 500 "desperate" is laughable let alone 1 in the top 10.

LOL. MS isn't the one giving away a piece of hardware that came out 3-4 months ago which was originally $100, then immediately slashed to $80.... now a free toss in.

When was the last time you saw Apple, Google, Roku or any of those media player hubs being free?

But no worries. Sony will make back the money 10-fold by selling PS3 game streams for $45/quarter ($180/yr) to the millions of gamers out there. lol

And if that is too rich, I'm sure they can get a Sony fan to pay $30 for a 30 day rental of Saints Row. A game that can be ouright bought for $10-15.

You forgot to mention PS Plus being a bad idea, too. Oh wait.....

Point is, PS Now has just launched. It's value will get better as it remains available to the user no different from PS Plus. For now, however, it's vaule is more than worth the price for those that have a job and looking for an instant library without the need of remaining stationed at one specific device. And its $20 dollar not $45 unless you are going for three months. Either way, that is relatively cheap if you have a job.

I think MS can afford to lose more upfront. Its a bit odd to call MS desperate. Losing a few more dollars per console is a joke to them, they are a corporate monster compared to sony. They know they'll make it back on software, and even if they don't, they are still way ahead of sony overall.

MS games division is in far worse shape than Sony's. Shareholders don't look at the Xbox brand and say "Oh our division is losing multiple millions of dollars? Who cares?! March forward." and really, that's the only thing that matters.

Sony was about to put Microsoft out of business last gen with the PS3. They got cocky though and didn't execute the plan. I think Microsoft should just be glad that the Xbox brand is even still around. After the beating the PS2 gave them and now the PS4 is giving them it's a feat that they're still afloat. I think the PS5 will be the console to finally cease Xbox operations.

I know $20/mth is an option. The only options are $20/mth or $45/qtr. I picked the $45/qtr = $180/yr option as that's the cheaper route to go. But at $20/mth it equates to $240/yr. lol

Who ever said PS+ was a bad idea? Xbox gamers had been used to paying for XB Gold for years. It was Sony gamers making fun of paying for online. PS+ comes around and for PS4 it is mandatory for online. And suddenly paying for MP is ok. lol

As sure as the sun will rise tomorrow. There will be a PS5 and it will end the console wars. Sony is like the John Connor of the industry. They're on a mission.
Seems plausible.

John Connor would be dead if he didn't get help from an outside force to stay alive. That holding company took over SOE. So going by that, PS will continue with someone swooping in to bail them out.

Microsoft made it okay to pay for online. Sony's hands were tied. It's amazing that they were able to keep PSN free last gen and stay profitable. They missed out on so much money but stuck to their guns because they knew it was the right thing to do. Gamers don't want to pay for all those bells and whistles. They just want to play online. If Microsoft didn't force the issue then it would probably be free to play online on both platforms or $25 cheaper at worst. PS+ is an incredible value anyway, unlike Games With Gold that just gives you old games that you can get for less than a dollar at your local GameStop. So i don't mind paying for the superior service.

I KNEW you were going to say that. Your bias makes you very predictable.

Ok, first of all, from the words of Sony, they are looking to decrease this charge in the future for PS Plus members, but because it just launched, kinks are being ironed out.

Secondly, $180 to $240 a year is not being paid up front. Its broken down in installments, a very small fraction of that. That's like a happy meal a week or less than an adult meal for two weeks. You probably blow that kind of money on a case of booze or a night at the movies. I could go on and on. But instead of doing that, I'll just go straight to the source....

IF YOU ARE A GAMER, its natural that you'd probably throw $60 dollars at ONE game a month. PS+ is $20 per month or $45 for 3 months. You already spent LESS than you would have on one game, and THEN you got over 100+ to choose from no matter what option you go for.

Now, less say you only get bargain choices for $10 a month. Again, you already got an entire library by spending less even for that.

What about trading a bought game in to half the cost of another ($60÷2)? Again, the money you used to half the cost of another game has already granted you an entire catalogue for the month and more than half way there for 3 months.

Even if you bought another system, by using PS Now, you have already paid less and you got over 100 games up front. I could get a better deal here than if I had taken my butt to Red Box.

If push comes to shove, you can pay every other month since you are not bound by contract, and you will still come out with a better value.

Did i also mention that these games will rotate every single month so that the player doesn't get bored? Yeah.... A huge rip off. If you have a job, the value is great.

Assuming there is a PS5.

Actually, if Sony keeps losing billions here and there..... assuming there is still a Sony in the future.

Oh.... And PS+ granted users with discounts and free games. THAT is where the charge came from or rather its value compared to what their competition was doing. That is why people don't really mind. Why do you think it has been used by competitors? It was a great idea whether you want to admit it or not.

And we heard this before. Yet, they are the one doing better than the rest right now. But hey....don't let me sink your ship. Keep hope alive. o/

Damn I would hope sony's games division is in better shape, that's all they have. My point is MS doesn't need xbox, sony's survival rest on the PS brand, MS's xbox does not.

That is the problem with the Xbox brand though.. MS doesn't need it and could drop it like a hot potato if things got 2 sour.

I think anti monopoly laws would have something to say about that, Microsoft can't just do as it pleases.

I want to thank everyone involved for adding quality content to the site. Bravo.

It's so refreshing to see PS owners rationalizing how it's perfectly O-KAY to pay for online play---just like we use to do.

At least we are getting some real value with the subscription services with the monthly plus and games with gold games. Other than a unified friends list old school live didn't give you much value.
