Sony and MS working on PS4.5 and XboxOne.5?

Thank you for actually replying and giving a reason to my post instead of just laughing about it.

I disagree. Sony is making a killing right now because the hardware is a bit more powerful which manifests in better performing games. Word has spread of this fact since the beginning of this generation, therefore Sony has reaped the rewards insurmountably with 1080p playing more like a Sony slogan than "Greatness Awaits". (Although I will freely admit 1080p is hardly a real benchmark)

Then why did the 360 and PS3 end up virtually tied while getting outsold by the Wii? Why is the Playstation 2 the best selling system ever? You can even look at handhelds too. Is there any evidence that power is the top factor for sales?

Previous two gens were very different as both consoles were released very far apart.

Also last gen the difference was extremely minor and it was not publicized. This gen, the "performance gap" has been talked about a ton. It isn't just digital foundry counting pixels. Most mainstream reviews talk about power and how the PS4 has more.

The 360 came out first and it didn't finish first

I heard lots about 360 having the best multiplats. It was no big secret.

who that's silly
I agree, that is silly. It's brand recognition, price and performance that has given the PS the boost this gen. The game line ups are very similar, so my guess is that had the Xbox One came out $100 less, better performance, and less focus on the casual Kinect and TV features, it would be doing better than it is now, though still not as good as the PS.

Even then it wouldn't be good enough because it wouldn't be winning a generation.

Which was more powerful between 360 and ps3? I bet a lot of gamers don't even know. The ps3 was supposed to be way powerful, and maybe technically was. Remember when ps3 fans laughed at the 360 before it came out saying it was going to be a joke?

The sales difference or performance gap that gen wasn't significant enough to draw any conclusions from in my opinion. I would argue that it will be a long time if ever that an Xbox "wins" a sales race worldwide.

Try finding any mainstream comparison of ps4/x1 that doesn't bring up resolution and hardware differences.

The differences this gen in performance are arguably small, but they are measurable and non-debatable.

MS really lost this gen before it even started, with the stupid "always online", "no used games" debacle, with basically zero clarification from MS. Weaker hardware w/mandatory Kintect was just the icing on the cake.

I bet they knew it wasn't the Wii

Combined Xbox One, Xbox 360 and Xbox Original sales are around 130 million consoles. I don't think MS is unhappy with that at all. And with 50 million people on Xbox Live, they surely have a huge revenue stream.

You can add in PC gamers too. Being able to play Microsoft games at 4K is an option for those that have the hardware. But that's a negative somehow.

If you add PC, that makes the Microsoft Eco-system too big. That wouldn't sit right with some.

Sure. However over time all of those have been fixed (price too) except one. MS is doing better but still not very good. Something still seems to be blocking it. What else would it be other than performance? I don't see exclusives being it (I'd say Xbox1 is better in that regard or at worst the same).

Brand name recognition and the initial launch momentum that the PS4 is still riding now. People still see it as PS4 being cheaper and being more powerful than the Xbox. Also worldwide support in every country, friends are more likely to see a friend with a PS4 so they buy one too and the cycle continues. Positive feedback loop.

The PS4 also has a more diverse game library in my opinion but that is subjective.

I know one thing, I'm really looking forward to E3. I hope both Sony and MS reveal upgraded consoles. I really want to be playing Battlefield 5 on a 4tf console October.

I don't think either is cranking out the hits just yet. But Sony has more mid- teir exclusives and also a ton of great indie games that are either truly exclusive to the console or appear on PS4 months before Xbox gets it.

I can't really even get excited for E3 anymore.

I know both manufacturers will show footage of games that were announced 2 or 3 years ago. And they'll have new announcements for games that are 2 or 3 years off still.

Of course they will have a few surprises.

I'll be interested to see if Nintendo reveals anything.

They ARE doing well, though -better than the 360-, just not in context of the "War" which only exists in fanboy minds.

If the business is profitable, they will keep on keepin' on. It's the reason Samsung still makes phones and Visio still makes TVs. Being number one gets you clout and bragging rights. If they bring in more than they put out, then they are good.

Very true, however they really can't afford another big "ding" to their player numbers. Xbox will never beat Sony worldwide anyway, but they still need to make sure they stay a viable #2 and not a niche.

They are doing fine and have recovered nicely from the early stumbles. However they need to avoid another big hit.

Yup but that's not why the PS4 won this gen.

its a negative for there console business yup.

Money all spends the same way regardless of where it comes from.

You realize there are tons of companies who's business strategies include competing against themselves with similar products. Diet Coke did a number on Coke's sales but in the end Coke became a larger company because of it.

I just feel like there's something for everyone on the PS4. Good point about the mid-tier and indie game exclusives though.

The PS2 has outsold the entire Xbox brand of consoles at about 155 million sold. Add in PS1, PS3, and PS4 sales and it's a bludgeoning. I don't think Sony is unhappy with that at all. And with 50 million people on PlayStation Network, they surely have a huge revenue stream. So who wins?

Both?

I was reading a thread were a developer was explaining how much more work these new consoles add to their pipeline. Basically its ridiculous how much extra time is needed, and they will need to hire a crazy amount of staff to do it.

The funny part is Gafers were explaining to him how they should approach their development differently to get more work done.

These are non game developers, gamers, who apparently know every god damn thing in the world.

Listen folks, just because you play games, even if you've played them you're whole life, if you're not a developer, don't pretend to be one. Its not the same thing shockingly.

So damn true...

So true. As someone who has worked in IT for many year (not in gaming) I can't help but feel this way:

What do I do?
