Super Lucky's Tale Is A Simple And Gorgeous Platforming Exclusive On Xbox One X
A whole new tale to tell.
One unexpected surprise from back at E3 this year was the announcement of Super Lucky’s Tale, bringing one of the best received VR games from the launch of the Oculus Rift to the more conventional world of gaming on a TV. This is an Xbox One and PC exclusive, but not only that, it’s an Xbox One X launch title.

If you hadn’t been paying attention, you might be forgiven for assuming that this is a straight up port of Lucky’s Tale. However, this isn’t taking that game and disentangling all of the VR wizardry from it, it is instead a brand new adventure with the same characters and world, as Lucky sets off to try and rescue his sister and the Book of Ages from the evil character known as Jinx.

One thing that’s instantly clear from picking up the controller is that this isn’t the most taxing of 3D platformers and boasts a distinctly family friendly affair. The game is incredibly bright and colourful, and looks simply gorgeous in full on 4K through Xbox One X, and it really calls back to the classic days of platforming on N64, albeit in much, much, much higher fidelity. It might almost be a bit too chirpy and happy, with an eternal smile on Lucky’s face, but there is an undeniable charm to it all amidst the recent 3D platformer revival.

It even borrows their style of dialogue between characters, as a foolhardy ninja cat named Master Mittens mocks and challenges Lucky to progress through the level and reawaken the Great Golem that looms over the centre of the hub area. He happily meows his way through the dialogue, thankfully avoiding the annoying gibberish that Yooka-Laylee went with, and instead managing to sound as conniving and shady as you’d expect.

Lucky runs around at a relatively slow pace, it feels like – even if watching back the footage shows this to be categorically untrue – and that feeling really helps to keep the game nice and easy to control. Lucky has a bunch of moves in his arsenal, not all of which make a huge amount of sense for a fox. He can pull a neat spin attack and bounce off an enemy’s bonce, of course, but then there’s his ability to burrow underground, letting you collect coins that have been buried under little mounds of dirt or allowing you to hide from enemy attacks, only to spring out and surprise them.

In terms of the actual platforming, it’s not terribly challenging going on the section of the game that I saw, but exploring the world and figuring out what you need to do is a joy. Our main task here was to bring a series of robot heads back to their bodies so that they could ring the bells and awaken the Golem, and that in and of itself limited the scope of the challenge, as carrying items slowed Lucky down and meant that he couldn’t jump. Instead, this meant that we were waiting on platforms to raise, lower or spin, while dodging fireballs and outwitting enemies that doggedly follow you.

The challenge does increase when you have to battle against various enemies, from choppy plants to stinger firing bees, as they’re only stunned when you do a swiping spin attack, and you need to follow this up with a second attack in order to make them disappear. With three hearts per life, it’s got that old school vibe to it, that’s for certain, though again, this demo area didn’t appear to be terribly challenging.

There’s not a huge amount more to say about this game, I feel, which is both a blessing and a curse in a way. The original game was certainly boosted in its profile by being attached to the Oculus Rift launch, and I’m sure that same thing could happen here with the Xbox One X, as Playful find themselves as the only exclusive game releasing alongside the console – no pressure, eh? Super Lucky’s Tale might not be groundbreaking, but it’s charming, simple fun, and boy does it look good on Xbox One X!

I don't know about anyone else, but I do. I got a really sweet deal on Panasonic ZT60 a few years ago and it still beats *most* of the 4k stuff I've seen...so far.

It's just a matter of time before I upgrade though.

That was an amazing TV. Perfect end of an era set really, RIP Plasma.

Correct analogs here :p

Still no Doom on the list either, despite showing it numerous times in their montages at the X conference.

Doom is back on the list btw.

thats a plasma right? the only way you will be satisfied with a new TV is if you get an OLED

Already have Super Lucky Tales Pre ordered. This is the type of game I preorder to show MS I want more games of this ilk. Normally I never Pre order games.
I was wondering if they were making a wireless version of the Legendary Duke Controller. It would suck if they only make a wired version.

That's really the best way to show them.

I am sure Amazon doesn't count this week, but whatever....

"After opening pre-orders for the Xbox One X yesterday, Microsoft’s upcoming gaming console is already at the top of the charts on Amazon, currently sitting at Number 1 in the Video Games category.

As many had predicted, the Xbox One X has already sold out on Amazon and most other online stores due to the hype surrounding the device. Stores should be getting more stock in though so if you haven’t pre-ordered your console yet, it’s worth checking the item page on Amazon on a regular basis to grab one when it’s available. Amazon also allows users to sign up for email notifications for when new stock is available though these don’t always get sent out in time."

Sold out in Canada too.

Xbox One X’s 4K Resolution Has No Impact on CPU, GPU Allowed Increased LOD And More Objects – Dev

Though Microsoft’s Xbox One has been touted as the “most powerful console ever” – and make no mistake, it certainly is – there are some noticeable imbalances in its hardware. While the 12 GB GDDR5 RAM and GPU are certainly stellar, the processor seems to only be marginally better than the Xbox One. Though you could attribute this to Microsoft wanting to keep costs down, it certainly seems more like a half-step of sorts rather than a big leap forward. Or is it?

GamingBolt posed this question to Wargaming technical director Chris McCue, who’s worked on the free to play title World of Tanks. World of Tanks will certainly run in 4K on the Xbox One X but what are McCue’s thoughts on the Xbox One X’s CPU? Will it really hold back the console?

He replied that, “We’ve actually found the CPU and GPU improvements to complement each other quite well. Increasing the resolution from 1080p to 4K uses much of the additional power of the GPU but has basically no effect on the CPU. With those extra pixels available to display fine detail, though, we’ve chosen to extend our LOD ranges so that more objects render in the distance. That kind of change has CPU cost that is a good fit for the improved hardware there.”

Of course this is one example and we’ll have to see how other games, especially those like Forza Motorsport 7 which run in native 4K/60 FPS, will effectively exploit the Xbox One X’s hardware. The console is out on November 7th worldwide for $499.

So it's not made by MS?

Passion project by one of the former MS Xbox creators, Seasmus Blackley. It is officially certified and the design is used with the blessings of MS/Xbox and being produced by Hyperkin using his design tweaks + OG Duke spec.

I'm buying one regardless but to be clear expecting MS, Logitech or Hori build quality might by iffy.

Some of their stuff seems to be hit or miss. I've got my fingers crossed that since it's a slightly big deal to have a direct deal with MS on this that it ends up on the upper spectrum of that.
4k vids of Tomb Raider that can be watched directly on 4k TVs! Gotta love Gamersyde

These are nice as hell.

Digital Foundry has 4k HDR footage of this game via their Patreon sub btw if anyone is interested in that.

So can I watch this on my One S in the browser and it will be 4K if I have a 4K TV?

I believe so, but double check the site as far as the HDR is concerned. Not sure if they are in HDR or not.
