Official Thread Middle-earth: Shadow of War

When Halo 5 first launched, it got killed for paid REQ packs. I've put near 1500 hours into the game without buying one of them. My total cost for that game is still $60. As long as these microtansactions aren't required to complete the core game, I fail to understand the controversy. Factoring inflation, games are actually cheaper today than they were a decade ago, offer far more average content and are much more expensive to produce. I suppose publishers could match inflation and start selling games for $80...or continue to rely on a handful of people with money to burn buying micro-transactions.
This.

Thought for sure Shadow of War would crack 90 on Metacritic. Barely beating out the first game at 85 right now. Guess people don't know a masterpiece when they see one. I mean, really. If it's better than the first then it's going to be amazing.

Why is Gamespot the arbiter? They're just one site. Even then, they have so much turnover, you can't rely on any consistency of opinion.

Disc based games went up in price to $59.99 at the beginning of the PS3, 360 generation, before that they were $49.99 for what seemed like forever. That being said your point still stands, as long as the optional charges aren't things you absolutely need to get the full gaming experience I'm fine with it. Honestly I'd be fine with another price increase if it means making the industry more stable, even just $5.00 a game would likely help a lot and they'd make more money that way than by getting what is likely a small percentage of overall players buying loot boxes.
I certainly remember 60- 80 dollar carts back in the day. I do remember when prices dropped because discs were cheaper, though...

Same site that changed their Shenmue score cause people moaned and of course the whole Kane and Lynch drama.

Yeah that's why I said disc based games ;) Cartridge pricing was more like what I think should happen now, more content meant you paid more. Of course that was because they needed more storage in the cartridge so that's why the cost was passed on to the consumer but I think that's a fair pricing model now as well. It's either charge more up front or all pubs start doing their own subscription based service where we end up having to pay not only Sony or MS but also having to pay a sub fee to a publisher when it comes to playing their MP games. I'd much rather spend an extra $10 up front than worry about any other kind of pricing models.

I think it's fine now. Obviously they are still trying to find the sweet spot, I think. They have the lower, base tier at 60 bucks, then you can buy ultimate editions and the like. That is actually what you are asking for. Just buy the ultimate editions- you get DLC packs and what-not, and you pay a bit extra for them.

People only look at pricing from that end-product standpoint, not from one where the amount of content the developer can sustain on that initial 60 dollar end budget. Employees cost money. Of course, these same people will get up in arms when they hear about some companies not paying their employees enough. Silly, and driven by their desire to have everything.

The reason I'd rather they raise the base price and get rid of deluxe editions is simply because season passes/Map packs screw up the MP component long term, last night I went to play the old Battlefront and I couldn't find anyone in Starfighter matches on the DLC maps, I had to go to the maps that came with the base game. I agree people need to realize some games cost more to make than others and we as the consumer may have to put the money out to cover that, especially when it's a high production value game with a ton of content that also has licensing costs on top of it.

So finally got my game downloaded after a day of frustration.

I loved the first game, and from the little I played this sequal isn't going to dissapoint.

I’m absolutely loving it so far. Did you get it on PC or Xbox ?

Xbox.

I would have been playing yesterday but there was an issue for a small group of folk that caused it to download extremely slow. Seems MS managed to fix it in the early hours today.

So playing the first. Is it like Morrowind in that I can go straight for the boss? Or do you have to deal with the story?

I'm only a few hours in, and I'm loving the game... But the colour pallet feels so wrong. Maybe not wrong, just ugly. I can't put my finger on it.

I think maybe the greens are too yellow?

Anyway, it's strange that I found the first game so alienating at first, but I've been playing Cuphead a lot, and this feels like a nice calm stroll by comparison.

From memory, there's a few missions you have to trigger to get the second last boss to trigger, I think... You need to get the gates to open, as well as go to a different zone (that reminds me of the cow level in Diablo).

Go for the boss? There are like hundreds of bosses in this. You can’t start building your army until Act 2 so the story is important. I’m really enjoying the story. It’s taken some liberties with the Middle Earth mythology but so what.
