Q: When's the last time you had a meeting with Sony about Syphon Filter?

A: Nineteen ninety ...

I'm really liking how it looks, the skin on the character models faces is really impressive.

Watched the first 10 minutes. I didn't want too much spoiled. Looks like an interesting world. I like the realism they're going for. Motorcycle riding looks solid. I'm in.

Andy, I thought that guy did great again in that question shoot off. Pretty funny, and honest. I like the "he doesn't swim, but he can swim" reply.

Yeah, I also liked his answer about predicting E3 reaction to their showing. He stopped the guy when his thumb was still pointed down. He seems to know the game is getting a lot of flak. I have some sympathy for him. It must be tough to hear that, when it's your baby, you've worked so hard on it, and you're proud of it. But he has a sense of humor about it.

He's a humble guy and a little anxious, but he's not a phony. I like him.

IMO, the game looks like cat piss.

I watched about 10 minutes of the video, skipping around a bit, and my brain literally shut off. Shut off! I could have died, but it restarted due to my strong will to live.

Literally everything they talked about and showed, were things other games in this industry have been doing for years.

I remember watching Harvey Smith (Deus Ex, Dishonored) say in an interview once that your game should have one big innovation and everything else you do should follow best practices already established.

All Sony Bend did was throw out the innovation/creativity and do nothing but best practices.

This feels like one of two things. Either a "training wheels" type game to get Sony Bend up to speed on AAA game development, or the last game a bad development house makes before they close up shop.

5 years for this? Sheesh!

Hey remember when you said that about God of War a couple months? Good call on that one

But when someones posts are not consistent or credible then its a different story.

Or when someone has a long reputation for trolling and permabans and likes to sh*t on everything that isn't PUBG or Fortnite...

No difficulty settings. That's unusual. They're talking about it as if the game is meant to be challenging.

I just thought it was funny how he intimated my opinions were not real and I lacked consistency.

Let's live in a world where words mean something, am I right? Up top!

Heh.

I don't think your opinions are unreal. I think they're arrogant and condescending, and they seem designed to just stir other people up and get attention, but they're real enough.

A friendly reminder, if you would like to continue to post in this thread, you will need to avoid being yourself trolling, sh*tposting, saying crap just to annoy people or stir the pot, etc. It's fine to express negative and critical opinions -- plenty of people do -- but you're on a shorter leash than most, and the post above contains the usual stuff (e.g., after watching for less than 10 minutes, the game "looks like cat piss," has zero originality, your brain literally shuts down because it is so terrible, etc.). So, fair warning.

If you have any arguments, questions, or insults, just PM them to me; don't post them in the thread; I don't want to derail things.

I think it looks great tbh. It looks like players choice and systems will be integral to whether this game is really good. I like the sound of most buildings being explorable and the choice that is available.

Hands on impressions of the game in the first section of the video.

Here are GI's impressions. Sounds like they liked it, even though they had open-world fatigue going in. In terms of differences from other open-world games, they highlight the tone, the destination-orientation of the game (vs. lots of random side activities and crafting items), and the ambushes.

In terms of "another zombie game," he talks about how the narrative push is stronger here than with any other open-world games are. They also seemed complimentary of the studio, their open embrace of their influences, their sincerity and passion.

I like that you have to keep a watch on your bike's condition and gas, and that if you don't watch it, you can get stranded. The newts sound cool -- teenage freakers, lower on the social totem pole, won't attack necessarily but you have to keep your eye on them. I liked the fact that you have to make lots of choices with regard to how you treat Boomer, and there are 20-30 other characters that will play significant roles in the game.

This team has been together since the mid-90s. Garvin is the main/sole writer. He and the other leads worked on Syphon Filter.

This gameplay picks up basically after the 1st hour of the game that was shown yesterday.

Don't want to spoil it for myself. I just want to get a feel for the mechanics of the game. I think I've got enough now and am probably going to tune out on additional coverage.

Reminder that the game is still nearly a year away, so lots of development time still left to go.

I would like to see that second hour as I don't think judging a game based on the onboarding process is really fair. It won't load for me but good to hear it picks up.

Does anyone have any theories why we're getting all this media exposure to the game right now? Doesn't it feel like you should be showing off the first hour and forty minutes a week or so before release? This just seems really early and unecessary at this point.

It is weird to be showing the first hour so far out from release. It could be a reaction to the negative stories that have floated around the web. There seems to be a healthy bit of skepticism surrounding this game. I like what I've seen so far but it doesn't have that "wow" factor outside seeing a horde of zombies. Its not like when they first showed Aloy facing off against that Thunderjaw for the first time which made everyone take notice.

A few things occur to me. I think they want to give it a spotlight before E3, because they want to give E3 to the other 4 heavy hitters. They want to give Days Gone a "deep dive," too, but they know another E3 showing would be overkill. Plus, the game doesn't seem to show well at E3, for some reason. Like Busterman says, it doesn't have the "wow" factor that makes it stand out. So maybe they think an extended GI feature would do the game more justice than an E3 showing -- which I think is true.

As for why they are showing it before E3 rather than much later, it could be several things. One is that if it didn't go before E3, people would wonder why it wasn't there. Is Sony ashamed of it? Is the game in trouble? You know how people speculate. The game is having a hard enough time in the press without adding those sorts of rumors. Another reason (probably a big one) is that they are trying to correct misperceptions about the game -- they want to help people get past first impressions ("eh just another zombie game") and have a better understanding. They want to do that as soon as possible, which is smart -- you want to try to correct perceptions when they are still soft and maleable, rather than waiting until they have set like concrete. Another reason could be that they are ahead of schedule (which is what I've heard), so they are confident enough to show it in the current state, even though it's got 9 or 10 months before it releases.

My guess is that they'd also rather wait until Paris (if they have a presser this year) or PSX to show it on stage again since we've seen it at two E3's already. Spider-Man is coming out before any other trade shows and the other games will likely be debuting gameplay so I think Days Gone would just sort of get lost in all of it. Probably the same reason it was pushed back until early next year, there simply isn't room for it this year in the schedule, especially with two open world games coming out in the fall that will be massive sellers (Spider-Man and RDR2)

I agree. I suspect they don't want to focus on it for yet another E3, but they still want people to remember it's there. Smart.

This is better, as I think E3 is better suited for reveals and they've already shown extended gameplay for it.

I love the detail in the world. Hopefully the combat and animation improve a lot before it’s released, which I’m sure it will.

The acting seems a bit below Sony’s standards so far as well.
