DirectX 12 Coming to Xbox One thread, v. 2

Azure is overhyped to a degree, but overall the AI functions, Dedicated Servers and a handful of other showings have been great thus far.
Over hyped as we don't really know wtf it is going to be doing for the x1 in the future.

But I can tell you it's real. I work for a company that provides most of this gear for the cloud, actually the only company that has all the parts for the cloud.

We did get word MS bought a ton of gear. Like 3B worth, word has it mostly for Azure. But who knows for sure. The deal did happen I know that, compute layer surely, storage not sure, as that's what I provide - I would've heard.

1000% though it's the future of a lot of applications, healthcare, gaming etc.

lol what? What company do you work for?

Excellent picture many felt those numbers weren't "hard" enough though?

Picture is clear, & I have no doubt about it. In fact, I think most people will feel the same way with this chart.

:) 3DMark is well reputated.

Is this chart for xbox one? if so color me impress. :)

If its on PC, then its widely expected, due to DX12 more direct to the metal on PC compared to DX11, but neverthess its a massive gain.

Xbox one is an 8 core CPU with 8 threads, these show only 4. So not likely Xbox one.

It's only a matter of time before developers unlock the power of the cloud. Now they've got DX12? We're about to see some amazing games.

Alright gents, this was posted randomly on another forum, and I absolutely cannot find where it came from. If anyone can find the original source, please let me know. I am not trying to start another 'X1 vs PS4' fight. If anyone can confirm/deny any of this please do. Otherwise here it is (could be total BS either way):

"This was true of DX 11.2 as well. Neither the PS4 nor any product currently available for either NVidia or AMD supports the full tiled resources stack. AMD supports a tiny subset of it. NVidia looks more interested in brute force approaches with GPGPU. The X1 ~appears~ to be the only device that supports the full range of tiled resources."

"Anyhow, D3D 12 looks like it is fundamentally a first level of Reyes rendering system, and they are pretty clearly killing off z-buffer rendering. The tiled resources hardware is needed for the bucketing that happens in Reyes, and the yet to be demonstrated ray trace hard ware in the X1 will be used for lighting the scene."

"So yeah, hardware like the PS4, and every product from either NVidia or AMD is basically obsolete by the DX 12 announcement, as z-buffer is fundamentally incompatible with Reyes."

"DX 12 (and the Imagination ray trace accelerator) is basically the smoking gun that the PS4 is a hail Mary pass on the part of Sony, as a fundamental shift in how games are rendered is now happening."

"My posts in the lead up to the DX 12 announcement were ~mostly~ correct, I was correct in the shift, just incorrect in where it was going. Looks like Reyes instead of directly to ray trace and that makes a lot of sense."

...TELL ME MOAR!!

DirectX 12 is now a console API
http://www.tested.com/tech/pcs/460527-ten-things-you-should-know-about-directx-12/
Direct3D 12 will run on the Xbox One. The execution environment has been described as “console-like,” which probably means the layers are thinner. This makes sense today, since most modern GPUs are really highly parallel and highly programmable. What this means for future versions of Windows is unknown, since Direct3D is the rendering API for Windows 8 and beyond. I hope Microsoft doesn’t “freeze” the Windows API at D3D 8. We’d once again be in a situation where application developers might end up using different APIs than game developers.

Multiplatform support means better ports

Given that Direct3D 12 will run on mobile platforms and consoles (well, the Xbox One, anyway) as well as PCs, that means game programmers can focus on one API across multiple platforms. Completely cross platform games that run on Sony and Nintendo will still need extra work. But outside of first party games, it’s likely that game developers will write code on one platform, and compile/build for the rest. (It’s already been noted that the Forza demo shown at the D3D 12 event at GDC was running on Nvidia hardware, which means it was running on a PC.)

I don't know much about tech but if there is any shred of truth to that it would be the biggest turnaround throwdown ever pulled out in the history of gaming. popcorn.gif

Can someone provide a reasonable explanation of why this would be impossible?

would

I cant on a technical level, but on a practical note ill say this. Microsoft aren't idiots. They didn't become the company they are today by being idiots. Im not saying they have some ace in the hole, or hidden power lying in wait inside the X1, but you cant tell people this is going to be a console that will last for a decade, like they have, and not have some serious plans for the future in terms of advancing its capabilities.

Everybody sort of thought Sony was going to be more the parity with PC this time around because of the off the shelf nature of its specs, but the more I hear about things being implemented into the future of X1 like tiled resources, and Direct X 12, the more im thinking its the X1 that carries that distinction. Not that either the X1 or PS4 can hold a candle to the capabilities of a fully upgraded PC, but there's never been a home console released to market that improved its capabilities a year or two down the road in the manner the X1 has the potential to. Well, not unless you're counting the 4 MB pack for the N64.

How about because the Reyes method does use a Z buffer. I believe it is used to send point samples from one algorithm to another. Which coincidently is also needed for ray-tracing.

I have been saying this before but that's fine. I will let the people think what they want to believe.

Sounds like xboxneo and he was making it up as he went along.
