Football/Soccer Video Games Discussion

If not for it coming free with my console I would have held off on this years version.

Some new details on the next generation versions of Fifa:

News: New FIFA 14 next-gen details and screenshots released - CVG UK

Elite Technique

Thanks to the power of the new consoles and the EA SPORTS IGNITE engine, FIFA 14 includes more than 1,000 new animations which create hundreds of new skills and behaviors. New touch passes, slices and lobs have been added, along with behaviors like off-balance shots, panic turns, missed shot reactions and more.

And for the first time ever in the FIFA series, multiple players can compete for balls in the air. Not only will there be situations where three or four players can all vie for ball, but each will also have greater control with a variety of new headers. Players will be able to adjust the power, angle and direction of the header as they contest for the ball.

Pro Instincts

Players make decisions four times faster than on previous consoles. Decision-making is now based on multiple frames per second, resulting in players that are more aware of their surroundings and react accordingly. Depending on the situation, an attacking player may check his run, back into a defender or brace for an incoming tackle. During a sprint, a player may feint or leap over a sliding defender while still maintaining possession of the ball. Defenders will recognize more opportunities to support and pressure the opposition to help create balance.

Gameplay will be dynamic and continuous in FIFA 14 on next-gen consoles. Players will actually interact with sideline characters throughout the match, rushing towards ball boys if the clock is winding down late in the match. In the build-up to corners, players will jockey for position in the box.

Precision Movement

In FIFA 14, gameplay is built around True Player Motion and delivers a whole new feel in the game. Players will have unique step animations instead of blended run cycles, which means that every step counts. Foot slides have been eliminated and players will use true bio-mechanics to shift their weight from one leg to the other as they run. This dramatically changes the feel, look and realism within the game as players will be more grounded as they move across the pitch.

Players will gradually gain or lose speed as they run but will still have a burst of speed available. Using it incorrectly or relying on it too much may prove costly. Momentum is preserved while sprinting, so there's a balance to ensure each match still feels authentic. And more player personality will be visible in the way each player moves around the pitch.

Living Worlds

Nothing compares to a stadium full of fans cheering in unison. With FIFA 14, the crowds come to life with 3D crowd technology that completely changes the atmosphere of a match and makes every stadium feel alive.

The all-new In-Game Director will make each game of FIFA 14 on next-gen consoles feel like a match from the real world. Over 120 different broadcast cameras are positioned around the pitch, each following different players to build storylines and provide stunning new replay angles. You'll even be able to trigger a replay of a previous important moment during any stoppage of play.

FIFA 14 on the new consoles features a new default camera that is angled lower and closer to the pitch to bring new 3D crowds life. The crowd is now a part of the action. Fans will react to the action on the pitch, ebbing and flowing with the action and emotion of each match. Larger stadiums in FIFA 14 will also feature stadium exteriors and broadcast-inspired stadium fly-overs to add more depth to the match-day experience.

The EA SPORTS IGNITE engine allows for greater graphical fidelity. New cloth technology ensures player kits look and react to movement just as they do in the real world. Particles of grass and dirt, and even splashes of water will be visible during matches. All of the enhanced detail helps each match tell a compelling story, on and off the pitch.

Been playing FIFA14 on 360 almost daily. Overall it's not a whole lot different from '13 but I do feel the improvements are mostly for the good. I'm really enjoying Pro Clubs the most though I have only been playing drop-in matches and don't have a club (anyone? LM 82, 40+ years of footie knowledge, currently have more assists than goals).

I plan on doing the $10 Amazon upgrade to the XB1. Happy that everything is going to seamlessly transfer over.

The big change for FIFA 14 on current gen is that LT action. A fantastic edition. Makes me wonder how I ever played FIFA without it.

So I played this today, mind you, Ive been playing the PC version for a bit now. I was excited to see some upgrades. I was disappointed.

The good-
turf doesnt look as flat
stadium lighting looks better at night
slight improvement in animation and responsiveness

The bad
Horrid flat crowd
jaggies on player and especially staduim and grass
Improved grass is better, but not impressive.
a bit pale looking (the pictures I took are over saturated by default from smartphone cam)

Overall, better than ps3/360 but the pc version looks better to me because of better crowd and no jaggies. Perhaps from 10 ft away in living room it wont be as apparent, and you most likely cant see it in these pics, but im curious what other think that have tried it out. Its the only game i tried today. Will go back for knack.

Hmmm....I thought FIFA 14 on the Ignite engine had 3D crowds ? They do not seem 3D to me.

What is obvious though, is from the typical gameplay cam, it doesn't really look all that different from current gen. Crowd does look better at a distance though. Seems a bit more refined and a lot less messy.

Seems like a few things in play here. Games that are on both current and Next gen at launch i tend to think are just port ups. I do think that we'll see this improve over time. The other thing is you are playing FIFA on the PC with i assume better specs. I think its natural that you came to the conclusions you did based based on that information. Thanks for the pics, they look good.

You know, better specs are pretty much Irrelevant here. The Ignite engine is supposed to be a next gen engine. It is supposed to be an upgrade, but based on everything seen thus far it isn't. Not really. All that appears to be different is born from the extra RAM on the console. I would bet my house that they could pee all over Xbox one/PS4 FIFA with the current gen engine on PC if they just bothered to taken advantage of the hardware.

Also ( not to start a war) but PES 14 has better faces and animations compared to what we have seen of next gen FIFA 14.

I thought the X1/PS4 versions were supposed to be this fancy new Ignite engine while PC would still be the old engine. Oh lawd

Whats weird is ive read several previews that indicate the next gen version will have 3d models for crowd and no jaggies. WHo knows, perhaps the demo is an old build?

Maybe the xbox version is superior ?

I went back today to play again after playing the pc version last night and my impressions are slightly different. First off, jaggies while slightly noticeable, are not from 6-8ft away. From 2 ft away it was. Re: the crowd, the first couple of rows are 3d and the upper section is the 2d/3dish cutouts. Turf definitely looks better on next gen. The tv the PS4 was on dynamic mode, so jaggies were a bit exaggerated. Overall, it was enjoyable and good looking.

EA are some shifty mofos when it comes to marketing. Every time they have a 'new engine' it is riddled with the same issues as the previous. It seems by 'new' they mean same - applying some new lighting and graphics engines on top of the old, rotting game play framework. Sure they might tweak the underlying Ai or boost the animations but don't kid yourself, they are not giving you a brand new game.

I think PES 2014 signals a big change in the soccer landscape. Maybe not a changing of the guards but the obvious beta test that is PES 2014 looks to have huge potential once it leaps to next gen. FIFA sounds like its doing its best to squander a years head start but come next fall I think EAs game is going to see its largest exodus ever.

FIFA will still reign on license power alone but the race will become much closer in 2015.

One thing about EA's sports games that I have noticed over the years, and that hasn't really changed with new hardware, is that they have terrible use of color. Not that the colors aren't there. Just that the tone is so bright and cartoony.

Yeah the fact the grass actually looks like grass satisfies me enough for a launch title. I expect better with time though.

I'll still be getting this at launch. It's still a launch title and hopefully will keep getting better with more titles.

You and me both. Do you remember Fifa's last offering in regards to a launch title when the Xbox 360 was released? It's come a long way. I remember playing that at my friends house and just laughing at how appalling it was.

also

I remember you asking for my gamertag in regards to Fifa on the Playstation 4, get at me it's: OfficialSono.

Animations look the same as current gen. In fact...the whole game looks exactly the same as current gen, except for some graphical tweaks and some differences in smoothness of direct change.

For those that held out getting it earlier (like myself) i could see picking up the next gen version, but doesn't seem to be worthwhile for others. Does explain the EA $9.99 trade up programs.

Ive got it for Xbox 360 but only cause Future Shop had a great deal that lets me upgrade to next gen for free.
I'll have to have a physical copy but next year I'll get the digital and when Im sure its better than the previous year I'll delete the old one.

It looked better when players ran into each other...imo.

Seems the same to me, or at least close enough to not really make a difference.

Curious ....Do you have FIFA 14 for current gen ?
my son has all the FIFA series....I was never a soccer fan but he is so into it that has made me get into the sport. We play a few times a week.
