Football/Soccer Video Games Discussion

I've been playing FIFA14 almost daily on 360 and I am seeing clear and exciting differences, can't wait to upgrade to XB1 ($10 deal is a no brainer). The animations are clearly smoother and there are many more including reactions. I can spot players about the field better by recognition alone and the new lowered angle really adds to the gameplay. Stadiums and crowds look fantastic. Did anyone not have headphones on listening?!? Seriously a huge improvement for putting you in the stadium with crowd roars and chants that have been missing from the game as of late.

This video erased any doubts I had on whether to just keep playing on or to upgrade. I am all in now!

It looks similar but smoother for example on the Playstation 3 when a player dribbles with the ball and you choose to go either left or right there's a slight pause, it doesn't flow, the video above flows. I'm not expecting a totally different game but if they can release it with fixes for example better game flow, the scoring from a corner 9 out of 10 times and the easy to score from a cross inside the box then I will be happy.

It looks like they've sorted a few problematic gameplay glitches out and I'm happy with that, the new graphics don't excite me it's all about the gameplay and it's one video; so I won't be counting my chickens just yet. The real test comes on Friday.

I'm not upgrading either, I will keep my PS3 version for online with friends/family that haven't upgraded to the next generation.

It looks as if they implemented all of the changes I listed above, I'm enjoying this a lot more then I did on the Playstation 3. Much harder game.

OfficialSono - all Union members that play Fifa send me a request.

I'll play, but I'd rather do co-op vs AI if possible or team game. I don't play these games much so 1v1 you're going to rape me. I can play defense or something in a team game pretty good though.

You'd like Pro Clubs then. Its team vs team mode. Its pretty much all I play.

Having played a few offline career mode matches I'm really enjoying FIFA 14 on PS4.
The game is so far more realistic than its ever been. The computer controlled team gets called for fouls now. Last night I actually got awarded a penalty for a defender hauling down my player as he went up for a header on a corner. Never have I seen that before. The computer controlled team will actually sprint full speed down the wings now on the counter and pass back to to defenders in order to restart the build up if all passing lanes are blocked. The ball has a really nice weight to it and the animations for off balance shots are spectacular. I can't speak for online play but I'm confident that once I tweak the sliders a little this will be by far, the greatest game of Sim footy ever made.

There are a few bugs for FIFA for the Xbox One. EA.com details the issues which include a controller bug and a few bugs that hit the PlayStation 4.

With the launch of new consoles, your continued feedback to our community and game teams is more important than ever. Already this year your feedback has helped us frame gameplay changes on Xbox 360, PS3, and PC, and allowed us to gain insight into instances of freezing and crashing which has resulted in the FIFA 14 crash rate dropping 71% since launch, and we will continue to grow that percentage on both console generations. Those are just a few examples of how we are working together to make FIFA 14 the best sports gaming experience. The constant communication in an effort to improve products and services is what we like about the gaming community - a few recent examples from the PS4 launch this week were highlighted in articles from GameSpot (on connection issues) and Kotaku (on hardware issues).

In an effort to keep you up to date, we’ll continue to inform our fans about title updates, maintenance periods, and potential issues. This starts today on next-gen and the following is an outline of issues we are aiming to address in the very near future. The first of which are issues we will address in a Day 1 Update: a potential controller bug that Xbox One users may experience when they initially load FIFA 14, and a bootflow issue causing problems to online features.
  • Controller Bug: Using two separate controllers, both assigned to user profiles, and then using controller two to navigate the bootflow when FIFA 14 is loading can result in a crash. The FIFA dev team will be fixing this issue as soon as possible (shortly after launch) but, in the meantime and as a workaround: please only use controller one to navigate the bootflow of FIFA 14. You can turn on and use the controller two once in the main menu.
  • Bootflow Issue: If you suspend the console (leave it inactive until it ’sleeps’) on the title screen in the Xbox One bootflow, you will not be able to access any online features when returning from an unsuspended state. As a workaround: don’t suspend the console when on the title screen. If you do, simply restart the console (XB1 Only).
In addition to the above, there are a number of known issues that we are working on solutions for. They include the following items we plan to address in a upcoming title update:
  • FIFA fans cannot join Friends Only matches via a friend’s profile (PS4 Only). You should: Accept the invite from the user when it comes through and you will be able to join the match properly.
  • Title crash in Co-Op seasons if the captain is using a custom formation and the non-captain does not have any custom formations (XB1 Only). You should: Make sure you have the same amount of custom formations as your teammate, or not use them.
  • The ‘Seasons Win’ item in the EA SPORTS FC catalogue will not be properly received if gifted to a friend. (BOTH PS4/XB1) You should: Hold off on gifting this item until the upcoming title update.
  • Compatibility improvements with Xbox voice commands (XB1 Only).
  • When playing as a GK in Pro Clubs, you will have no way of changing the camera off of the ‘End To End’ camera (XB1 Only).
We hope you find these small tips helpful while we work to push live the first title update on Xbox One and PS4. Well you keep you up-to-date on any other potential issues and let you know of any tips that we think will help in the meantime.

This is why it is usually a good idea to avoid EA sports games for the first year on a new console. Although, those don't sound too bad for the most part and will get patched eventually.

I'm a PES fan myself so really having a problem deciding on my next gen sport fix. FIFA sounds like an incremental upgrade - a better playing and looking port of the current gen.

It is tempting to pick up FIFA but at the same time NBA2K is sounds like the only sports game that is truly built from the ground up to be next gen - granted its pretty bare bones and I'm not a huge basketball fan. Everyone seems to be loving 2K's gameplay.

Part of me thinks to wait on FIFA's World Cup edition which we should start hearing about soon.

Lnin0 - Winning Eleven/PES died after number 5. I was a PES only guy but turned for Fifa when 09 was released (Hadn't played a Fifa since 95 on the Super Nintendo) and haven't looked back. The World Cup games are usually a poor showing so don't bother but 2014 it's a decent game, getting better all the time especially on the new generation. Like everything it's going to take you a while to get use to but once you do it plays a great game.

NBA on the other hand, I'm from London never played a NBA game or watched one until about 3 years ago for that matter but it's a tuff game to get on with, frustrating takes an age to get use to, lot's of shots, rules that I know nothing about. I'm still trying to get use to it.

Once the 'fox engine' gets to stretch its legs on next gen hardware I think PES is going to be very relevant.

I agree with you on the NBA thing. I just read so many people saying its gameplay is head and shoulders more realistic than any sport game before it. Those graphics kill as well.

That said, I am still hedging toward FIFA. Maybe WC will be released as a DLC expansion. How is next gen FIFA online. Is it all run and gun or does defense and tactics matter?

Lnin0 - One thing I can never fault with Fifa in the past 3 years is online play. 95% brilliant for me, lag free. You won't have a problem with that side of the game.

NBA looks and plays great, I just don't know how to play it yet. It will come. I will be a king come NBA 2K15.

OfficialSono we need to get a game together sometime. Can we do like 2v2 against AI or something? I suck at these games so you would either decimate me 1v1 or I would be worthless against other players. I need to try Pro Clubs sometime...

Bummer, hope they fix this stuff soon. I played the PS4 demo and thought it was a huge leap in graphics and gameplay over the 360 version I've been playing. So last week I did the Amazon trade-in deal for $10 to get the X1 version and am waiting for it to come. I hope I don't wish I kept the 360 version - surely EA will address these issues with their #1 selling game.

I used to be a PES guy back on PS2 and OG Xbox, but they never got it together last gen and have nothing to offer yet for the new consoles.

I may be talking to myself here but I just did the trade-up deal on Amazon where you send them your 360 FIFA copy and get an X1 copy for $10. It took them over a week to process my trade-in so I did a chat and ended up getting an extra $25 credit. Plus the price of FIFA14 on X1 is now $49.99. So I traded up and ended up getting PAID $25 for doing so! Hope they fix those problems on X1...I wonder what MS/Sony are charging devs for updates on the new consoles?

i never had problems, but i play offline

anyway i'll post this here as there doesnt seem to be a FIFA14 thread. recorded with X1, i found this goal so satisfying and looks great too

It's a videogame of a sport... but it's still a videogame at the end of the day. My biggest complaint with it is that EA have removed the cheap 'sprint down the wing attack' and replaced it with a cheap 'nearly every cross into the box gets a header' attack.

Sturgeon's Rule: "90% of everything is crap."

Haven't played the game in a while. Aside from getting destroyed from OfficialSono I've just done drop-ins with my Pro trying to get better. Definitely some morons in the game.

-FIFA has idiotic AI logic which leaves them often out of position.
-FIFA favors highlight reel gameplay so the defense is always over matched.
-FIFA players statistics and real world skills have almost nothing to do with gameplay outside of adding trick ball skills.
-FIFA allows you to use sprint/pace all game with no penalty to a players stamina.
-FIFA makes crosses and chipped through balls deadly accurate even from poor players.
-FIFA logic favors offense on headers to the point the ball will pass through even the best positioned defender.

Most gamers just want to hold the gas and go while being rewarded. To develop skill takes patience as well as failure so it is not a reward cherished by most of our attention deficit society. That is why most of today's biggest games are shallow, devoid of any thought or skill beyond basic twitch mechanics, and constantly drip feed the player some bs reward to give the illusion of depth or longevity. While twitch skills have their place in gaming, it is a sad state of affairs when everything must devolve into this single and lowest common denominator.

Therefore, a game like FIFA rewards you for low brow skills even when they exploit the natural tendencies of the real world sport which the game is actually emulating. Since people will take the path of least resistance, playing to the games weakness or in balance - no matter how unrealistic - will be the favored style of the majority.

Of course, this is all the more irritating if you are someone seeking a soccer game that emulates reality to some degree beyond a graphical soccer skin.

If you play on full manual controls like I do its actually an excellent game.
Soon as I take it online though I get matched up with full auto players who sprint pressure and hack like crazy on defence and then spam through balls and ping pong pass at hyper speed with no dribbling on offence.
That's not soccer.... that's Pong.

There's something about online sports games that bring out the worst in people. I don't know why exactly. Sure, every game has idiots online, but sports and driving games seem like most of the community is like that.

The game should be played on all manual anyway, not this automatic ping pong garbage.

Why is a sport with men wearing shorts kicking a ball in a girly way the most popular sport in the world when their are much better options? Why ask why?
