GT: 10 Series That Deserve to Die

Stories sucked terribly. Grade C movie material. It's the most overrated game series of all-time.

Is this the same person who gushed over The Revenant trailers natural lighting? And you can't appreciate Kojima's directorial presentation? Hmmm...

Metal Gear series is amazing, but with Kojima gone I would say yes make part 5 the last one. No way you are doing the series any better than the genius. Others on the list I agree with especially Fable, now those games are overrated POS.

Look at how many amazing Zelda games there have been that weren't created by Miyamato. There are tons of franchises that have maintained a certain quality without the original director/team.

Metal Gear Solid is a military, pseudo philosophical, science fiction universe. Ummm...Ill have some more please.

Konami should wait until the dust settles and see if they can put forth an honest effort with another mainline entry in the series.

Metal Gear Solid is a prestine example of illustrating how a long standing franchise should be run. We don't see sequel after sequel each year and each iteration plays much differently than the last. It's also unbelievably healthy in terms of how it's received by the hardcore.

It shouldn't be on the list. Simple as that.

Fable just needs a reboot. They need to look at what was promised with the original Fable and see if they can deliver the dynamic, open world experience they promised. The art style and gameplay alone merits a current gen effort, given the right team.

If they do a reboot, I think they should ditch the storybook art style as well. It's beautiful. But I would like to see a darker setting.

It doesn't have to be realistic or gory. I envision a kind of 80's Conan movie type aesthetic.

Do you even know what you post?

Yes. The first post was meant to illustrate how you used generic terminology to describe your distaste for the series. The second post was meant to show how you appreciate directorial artistry in film but fail to recognize this industries greatest director of all time.

And you fail to ever make a point that makes any sense.

He makes s*** stories, that are long, drawn out, boring, convoluted, uninteresting, and below b movie in terms of engagement. The stories are absolute s***, but, most video game stories are absolute s***. Kojima's just are at the top of the pile of s*** stories.

Metal Gear has been around for close to 30 years. The last ones I played were for Ps1 and 2. The stories were beyond terrible and I remember them being agonizingly long. So I take it for the last decade it's been more of the same? LMAO- yeah Metal Gear can go away.

Interesting. I think the art style is the only thing the series has going for it in regards to identity. The first Fable was one of my most anticipated games ever. Was also one of the biggest let-downs of all time as it wasn't 20% of what Peter M was selling. I'm not sure what Fable's real identity is outside of it's art style. It's combat isn't that great or fun for an adventure game. The RPG elements aren't that deep or sophisticated for an RPG. There isn't any story, world, or character carry-over from one game to another. There's nothing to be attached to.

What I would like is for MS to somehow bring the original Fable's vision to life. I think the possibilities of a simulated world are endless with Cloud servers. Make it part simulation, part adventure game.

I think the core gameplay and ideas from MGS were good. Problem is the story got so weird. I think it needed closure and then a reboot. Without Kojima, it's probably irrelevant. At best the series lives in name only.

Well gameplay would be rebooted as well. But your way would probably be more realistic.

Last MGS I played was MGS1. Solid game. But never bothered with any MGS games since then. The follow up games just seemed to turn too much into cut scene games with tons of bickering back and forth between characters.

At the same time, the whole stealth thing is r******d.

It was something different back then, but any game with stealth gameplay (Splinter Cell too) is a tired and silly try at gameplay.

Sure makes sense. Enemy guards spot you, but if you can hide or outrun them for 30 seconds, they magically go back to their normal patrolling as if nothing happened.

Typical shooters often have scripted cover mechanics or brain dead "bee-line" attacks, but at least they behave more realistically in that once they spot you they don't forget and keep coming at you.

List was good only miss was not putting Metal Gear as #1 series needing a complete reboot starting with Snake. Its taken a far bigger dive than the Fable series. Loved MGS2. 3 was an improvement in many ways but also was where the story starting going helter skelter. The VR missions were the only thing that brought something new since and I fully expect this next one to be the nail in the coffin.

Only other thing i would mention are the Guitar Hero/Rock Band phenomenon. Totally milked and too soon for them to be nostalgic enough for a return. I expect both nee versions to flop miserably.

Will be interesting if the musical instrument fad returns. I think the fad ended somewhere around 2010, so it's been maybe 5 years.

Looking at the new stuff, looks like the biggest changes so far is revamped guitar buttons and GH now has real audiences cheering you on using various recorded bits.

5 year gap vs. new buttons + live audience feedback

I replayed the original MGS several years back and couldn't believe how bad the story was, back when it was a kid it was awesome. I don't think the series was ever good, it was just different and one of the first action stealth games period, but the story is complete convoluted nonsense. The new MGS looks good though, and I do like the open world setting, and I liked Rising for what it was.

I don't even remember the story. I just remember lots of chitter chatter with that green box.

The gameplay wasn't anything special, but what made the game great was the smooth 3D visuals done in a nice gritty and dark colour pallette. whereas as most other PS1 games were sports or bright coloured action and platformer games, Konami launches a military action game.

Probably the first PS1 game that had the epic feel of a solid overall package of visuals, audio bits, scope and new stealth gameplay.

This will bring the nail in the coffin because Kojima is gone and Konami won't care. If its a question of quality the series has maintained massive critical acclaim.

Whew, Solid Snake is getting his butt chewed up in this thread.

I've never been a fan of the series (don't like stealth games, find Kojima's writing pretentious), but the GT video on which this thread is based is actually very kind to the series. They call it "one of the greatest franchises of all time" and clarify that its inclusion on the list "isn't a matter of poor quality or a dearth of new ideas," but it "has everything to do with Kojima's sudden and secretive firing."

I've cued it up:

They basically feel like Kojima's work on MGS is done, and since he's gone, there shouldn't be another MGS game.

Assassin's Creed definitely needs a nice long vacation. Not sure I agree with Soul Calibur as it isn't like the game comes out often. It probably could use some sort of change to it though.

Final Fantasy can kick it as well. I don't mean stop making games, just give each game its own unique name and identity already.

Solid Snake, more like Solid s***.

Metal Gear is the first series that needs a very long hiatus and come back with a new evolution of the game. It's by far the most stale video game series of all time. It hasn't offered anything new in the past decade, at least.... It needs a new creative lead since Kojima is a one trick pony it seems.

:txbmad:

Have you not seen ANYTHING on MGS5? I FEEL LIKE YOU'RE TAKING CRAZY PILLS

now: Fable and soul calibur have essentially been dead for a little while. As opposed to going away, it should be seen what they will do next.

jumped the gun with plainviews post and now reading the rest I see THE ENTIRE THREAD IS AGAINST ME. EAAAAARGH I'LL KILL LIKE THE DAMNED

Meh I like how stealth is in most games, games being the main word, I don't want all my hard work sneaking through a compound just to be undone because someone caught a glimpse of me, if they added a hardcore option so that once they see you that's it they start shooting, but random enemy patterns after being spotted would make stealth more interesting.

I'd love to see at least one more Soul Calibur.

Look at his actual criticisms of the game. There are tons of things to criticize about the Metal Gear Solid games but half of his criticisms don't even make sense. It strikes me as someone who hasn't really played the games or someone just trying to...troll.

Why would you want that? If Square-Enix do that, then it won't sell that well at all in the Western Markets and will be a niche title like Tales of [insert title here] and other JRPGs. The name "Final Fantasy" is probably the only JRPG title that can break a million copies easily.
