I think my Father is actually going to build a new computer!

Dad's PC will be done today. I'll have some pictures.

The motherboard is freakin' impressive. Half the board is covered in aluminum heatsinks. 4 x m.2 gen 4 slots, and then a "hot swappable" gen 5 slot which is pretty neat and I've already tried it out.

No point to it for my Dad at this time why would he want to remove his main drive.......meant for other people but still a nice touch.

So hopefully it's as simple as putting in the ram, cpu, thermal paste, m.2 drive, cpu cooler, booting it up and turning on XMP in the bios and setting the usb with win11 on it then m.2 drive as boot order?

Right?

What could go wrong? Haha.

Nothing went wrong. It went so freakin' epic! I'm so happy for my dad holy crap this thing is fast........ Windows is installing fast too but he wants to look up everthing before he completes the installation.

This thing does not make the slightest noise it's nuts and I'm jealous actually.

Turns out his old Dell monitor doesn't have an HDMI input and we're both like "s***......"

Then it dawned on me........"Dad, you just bought a 4k OLED TV......"

AHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Eureka haha. Oh man....

Anyway, the prophecy has been fullfilled.

Lighting is poor though :(

My 80 year old dad is tired and wants to watch soccer and have a beer now. He's earned it.

29 degrees C idle temps is impressive.

I think I've done my dad proud here (it's his money) on this build. Very future proof and runs like a dream from the get go with no problems.

And had lots of help from you and Kvally and Karmakid and others, and really appreciate it! Much love here. Now time for me to move on and do MY thing (got the day off and spent it changing phone companies and helping my dad with the PC build)

Time to relax with a beer myself!

Seems legit, but I guess you could use PayPal or a credit card form safety/insurance reasons. I might use them later this week for my nieces computer, I’ll post the results if it’s legit
The Dad wanted me to ask if you tried this, and if it worked out and was legit.

Thank you so much Karma!

Well now he wants a 4k monitor.

I think the plan is to go display port to monitor and get a big ass long HDMI cable to go to his 4k OLED tv.

He's not gaming, but wants amazing picture quality. Must have HDMI 2.1 and latest display port.........

Yeah. Monitors.....not my forte but let's figure this out. Size? Probably big but not massive.

Wouldn't the TV suffice ? It's 4k and really big already with an amazing PQ 🤔

You'd think so and I'm trying to convert him.

He wants both. He's looking at 27" monitor and going to that with Displayport, and then getting a 4K capable HDMI cable probably 20 feet to the TV.

I'm not kidding when I say he multitasks, and by multitask I mean he watches 3-5 soccer games at a time all day long. It ridiculous to me but that's what he's into and he's retired and earned the right to do what he loves.

If you're wanting 4k, I would say minimum 32" and maybe you could get a nice OLED or IPS panel (curved or not according to preference) too.

He's already told me there are 2 27" models he's looking at. I don't know what those are.

And even though he has all the money in the world........sounds like he's looking in the $300 candian range.

It may be, I’ve yet to try it….
It worked but with some difficulty, but that was maybe my fault.

I purchased a Windows 11 pro license, but my dad decided to install the home version.

I only bought the Win Pro version because there was no home code at the time.

Side chat in support, eventually Windows was accepted.

So thank you. Save yourself hassle though anyone out there. The version you install off a USB key seems to matter. I can't even remember what we did to get it resolved, but it got resolved.

Thanks Karma (I mean that)

You can't build a PC and expect everything to go 100% smooth. There will be troubleshooting but you also learn more and more each time you do a build.

That’s great, sorry for the delay, I didn’t get any notifications alerts. But glad it worked out. It did for my nieces pc, went with the pro version and just pasted the key through the the update tab and update product key.

I may have to do what you did for an old pc of mine, install windows on said usb. It stays at an ever looping logo and can’t seem to get past it through all the videos and google search’s. Or I’ll just cave in and take it to a shop to try and recover whatever was on the main hdd/ssd.

Hey not your fault at all! When I created the USB Windows install file, he decided to go with Home edition. When I went to that site you suggested on the day he wanted to buy his lisence, only Pro keycodes were available, and so that's what I purchased and what probably caused the problem. All it took was some help from someone on the site through side chat to get it resolved and it worked. $30 for Windows, better than the $180 retail. So thank you very much!

As for your Windows issues, you could try a repair install, which keeps your data but might fix your issues.

Thanks, I’ll look into that. Dono if it makes a difference, I think the reason behind it not working is she turned it off whilst updating, like it was doing it a thing after it was shutting down but she forgot to turn off the monitor and instead reached for the tower and powered it down from there 😆

I would think it might help. It basically re-installs windows while keeping your data and settings, it just fixes the registry and stuff like that, which is really important for a functional computer.

Pretty sure it's not that hard to go into safe mode and do this aswell.

It's worth looking into vs paying some nerd (I'm joking!) to do it.

When I tired it wouldn’t go into safe mode, it would just reset and go back to said loading screen.

Thank you tho, very much appreciate the info. Doubt I’ll be able to get to it today or tomorrow but will try, but may have to wait till Friday

Hey no rush right? Pretty sure there's ways to force your PC into safe mode and do this. But you'll have to do your research. I'm crossing my fingeres for you that you can figure it out. That kind of stuff is a headache for sure, I know!

But if it's showing any sign of life, there is hope in my experience.

Thanks, yeah no rush.

Speaking of no rush, I may sell my 4090 to my brother, since I only got a few things for said build. I’ll be able to pay it off immediately (but I got no interest for a year if paid in full by then) and maybe buy some other things for the build before getting another gpu. I do often see the 4080 and 4070 ti super go on sale on the Best Buy app. I think that may be better for the stuff I’ll use it for, since I’m not much of a gamer on pc.

Well he ordered his monitor.

It's this (and was $299 Canadian when he bought it the other night, it's coming on monday)

Should be a good monitor. Looks nice as far as bezel etc.

Yeah for picture quality IPS since I think your dad probably won't care too much for gaming. Otherwise competitive use TN or VA panels.
VA Panels are awful for competitive lots of motion blur and crushed blacks but good contrast and colors. TN panels are really bad color wise but are fast, IPS is the best of both of those worlds. I wouldn't consider VA or TN panels these days with IPS being as good as it is nowadays. OLED is still the cream of the crop though.

I have owned or own all of these types of panels and have seen them all first hand. My first "real" monitor was a TN panel. I have an OLED now as my main screen and IPS for my 2 others, and have an ultrawide VA panel stores away.

So do you think he made a good decision here with the Dell? He's not a gamer.

I think the idea is to go Displayport to this monitor from the motherboard, and HDMI to the 65" LG C3.

I don't think there's really any reason to buy a VA or TN panel over an IPS panel these days. Those reasons (that are very few) are so insanely niche.

My nephew (so my fathers Grandson) was over a couple weeks ago and I was like "hey man, Dad let me spec out a new PC for him! It's a monster!"

And so we all went down to the basement and me and my nephew were just like "dang!"

And my nephew said to my dad "I have a 1070 lying around somewhere if you want"

Boom! He brought it by today. Just gave it to my dad for free.

I checked the specs on it and yeah........why not right? Totally unnecessary for what my dad is going to be doing with this PC.

Is there any reason he should stick with the 14600k onboard graphics vs this?

Thanks man. I'm learning a lot here about 4k and if not gaming "do I need all this latest and greatest specs to do 4k video and stuff"

I'm starting to realize this is all gaming s*** that has zero benefit to someone who isn't playing videogames.

Dedicated GPU > ONBOARD.

Ha! His 27" 4k monitor was JUST delivered right now.

It's too much for him and me right now.

"Go watch your soccer and enjoy your coffee, I've got s*** to do" was what I said.

So a few hours and maybe I'll show what he's up to and how his set-up looks.

I'm really curious how good text and everything else looks in windows at 2160p.

No rushing with an old man and no need.
