Kinect Topic

i'm not sure what you trying to say.
all you need is a standalone mic or built-in mic. why do you have to wear it?
Hm, when someone (maybe it was you?) mentioned having a mic I was assuming they were referring to a headset. Either way though, having it built into the console would be the best option, no?

i said MS should've made only voice command mandatory from the beginning and to do that they could have a standalone mic (not headset) or built it into the console. the latter would be the best option for sure.

I also like for my X1 to see me and sign me in before I even sit down. I also like some of the motion gestures with some of the games. Definitely need more than just a mic for that.

then you can buy a Kinect camera.
since they removed Kinect you get both or nothing. even voice commands are optional now and i feel that's missed opportunity.

Ok, I'm not even sure if I was replying to you then. Either way, I agree.

Agreed. Using a microphone, why not just go back to CD players and dvd 's too. Kinect makes s*** work of a microphone. No going back now...
I rather use a microphone and don't want people at my house hearing other people through my 7.2 SS.
Not everybody wants a spy-camera intercom man.

...and not everyone is so paranoid that their camera is spying on them either man. Not to mention you can mute the voices coming from the camera by your online gamers. Options man! Options!

Why would I want to mute people I am chatting with?

oh and living in a evil world some are aware...paranoid if you will but we won't get into meaty things.

Microsoft are a company that spend ridiculous amounts on R&D. Microsoft Research are tasked with finding solutions to complex problems, and whether or not those solutions can be commercialised.
Digitizing hand gestures has been a holy grail of the tech industry ever since the futuristic interfacing tech was theorised in movies like Minority Report and The Matrix, but none have really hit that level of reliability such a system would need in order to replace the precision of touch, and furthermore the classic mouse.
Microsoft Research recently showed off their new Handpose algorithm, which enables gesture tracking fidelity far beyond anything I've seen so far.
I've reached out to Microsoft Research to inquire about processing, as it's easy to assume that tracking and interpreting these hand gestures in research might require more intense computing power. Although its clear the unit in the video is Kinect 2, its unlikely that this technology is running on Xbox One - but applications dedicated to tracking hand gestures - not necessarily games - might benefit from this technology.
Slides from Microsoft's Windows 10 reveal purport that Windows 10 will unify app store access across all Microsoft hardware, and Xbox One was quite prominently featured therein. There's a strong argument for keeping mouse drivers away from the Xbox One - primarily to ensure that everybody playing utilizes the same input scenario, but could this technology enable mouse/touch like precision necessary for use in Windows 10 apps running on Xbox One?
The prospect is exciting, and could've been the original motivation for this research.

Well yeah that's pretty amazing... that fidelity... that responsiveness... that distance it's still working...

As said in above article - with that accuracy unified apps in tandem with Windows 10 would be really sweet.
Hand-tracking was always a great disadvantage for Kinect - I really really hope that this finds an implementation in times of the 'Kinect is dead' mindset.

Very cool! It's like Kinect 2 is very much ahead of its own time. It is like they tried to tap the first one out, even with its limited capabilities. At least they got the hardware out first, now its time for them to do their software magic.

As for Kinect going away, um did anyone else think this looks completely VR/AR motivated??? Even if MS doesn't throw down into the VR ring with Xbox, there is still PC/Oculus for them to push Kinects to. They have a revolutionary input device on their hands, even if it hasn't proven to be good fellows with tried and true console gaming.

Jesus... that technology combined with Oculus - you could practially reach out to an object which would make the illusion perfect *goosebumps*

On the other hand, there's that whole UI-input scenario with apps etc. - such a shame that Kinect 2 didn't launch with these capabilities...

I just remembered that I think I read somewhere that Oculus now has its own camera. Before that, Kinect (+ 360/Windows controller) was the preferred input device. I wonder if when the final product ships, people will be able to choose Kinect 2 for PC instead, since I'll bet that Kinect 2 is WAY more capable than whatever Oculus throws in the camera input ring.

Also, I agree 100% that the UI should have had something close to this accuracy with Kinect 2. I actually kind of expected something similar, rather than a slightly better version of the Kinect/360 interface. I use voice/controller only with Xbox One, but that would probably be different if it were this accurate.

This could be extremely cool if this had some tie-in functionality with Fortaleeza glasses; like insanely cool.

All the hand gesturing is fine and all. But to me, the real benefit of console cams is digitizing your image into a game like how NBA2k15 is allowing you to do.... although I've already seen a mashmash of good and awful digital face mapping. But hey, keep trying until it looks right.

Either digitizing your image into a game is too hard for programmers to do, the interest isn't there from gamers or both.

Personally, I think using the cam to face scan yourself into a sports, shooter or RPG is a no brainer. The argument is often..... well, allow that and gamers will digitize their weiner into the game. A possibility. If it's that rampant and impossible to control then just allow it for offline gaming.

All I know is that NHL 1999 or 2000 allowed you to import a jpeg onto a crude boxy head. Looked dumb at the time due to low polycount and a flat texture, but it actually worked.

Microsoft and Xbox fans hoping to see what's next from Kinect creative director Kudo Tsunoda are in for a treat this year, according to Xbox boss Phil Spencer. He says on Twitter that Tsunoda's next project--whatever it might be--is likely to come out of the shadows later this year.

Tsunoda

Asked on Twitter by a fan for details about Tsunoda's next project, Spencer confirmed that he is still with the company and teased: "2015 will be a big year for Kudo, he's stepping back into the limelight."

Unfortunately, Spencer did not share any further details.

So what might Tsunoda be working on? One possibility is Microsoft's long-rumored Xbox VR headset, which we recently learned might be officially unveiled at E3 2015 in June. Development is reportedly far along, as Xbox VR development kits were recently sent to unnamed studios.

Fortazela

Another possibility is that Tsunoda is working on Microsoft's other head-mounted display technology, the Google Glass-like Fortazela project that reportedly blends virtual reality and augmented reality. You can see a Fortazela concept shot at right.

Though Microsoft has yet to outline its official plans for the VR space, the company has been open in saying VR is something it's been experimenting with for a long time.

Competitor Sony announced its own virtual reality device, Project Morpheus, during GDC in March 2014, though the company hasn't said when it plans to launch the PlayStation 4 device or what it will cost. Meanwhile, the Facebook-owned Oculus Rift headset is also deep into development for PC.

Microsoft's mysterious VR project has been in development for years, and the company even gave a demonstration of the tech to Strauss Zelnick, CEO of Grand Theft Auto parent publisher Take-Two Interactive.

What do you think Tsunoda's next project is? Let us know in the comments below!

I personally hope it's the AR glasses than VR as I don't believe either X1 or PS4 have the power for VR.
The Oculus Rift DK2 has a 1080p screen (which is still blurry because how close to your eyes the screen is) and requires games to be played at 75fps to cut down on motion sickness. John Carmack said they really need at least 90hz preferably 120 hz screen to totally eradicate motion sickness.
He also said that to see the games at the clarity we would be used to on a 1080p monitor/tv the Oculus screen would need to be 8K because of the close proximity to your eyes. Imo even the highest end PC won't be running modern AAA games at 8K 90-120fps as you can only use 2 graphics card maximum (one card powering each eye/screen) without major hardware advances.
Don't get me wrong I will be picking up an Oculus Rift CV1 as soon as it's available but im under no illusions even a 1440p screen will still look grainy and will take a heck of a PC to run at that res in 3D atleast 90fps.
So as far as I can see MS/SONY would need to be putting PS2 graphics quality looking games if they need to have at least a 1440p screen @ a minimum 75fps. That might be ok for some but I've seen a lot of PS fans saying how they can't wait to play xxxxx AAA game in VR. (I'm sure plenty of X1 gamers will be saying the same thing if a VR headset is announced for X1) Keep dreaming.

I actually would prefer AR than VR also.

I would like to see the illumniroom proof of concept thing done with AR glasses rather than needing multiple kinects and a projector.

I was literally about to say just this. It would be neat to apply things like making it rain in your room if it's raining in the game- complete with reflections!- or having bullets fly out of the screen, or explosions warp vision. Used in conjunction with kinect would be pretty neat. Of course, I'm still waiting for kinect to use head tracking to make glassless 3d without having to render two images. At least for one person.

Oh lord, this better be some old prototype stuff from way before Nuts & Bolts.....

It has to be. Phil Spencer a while ago said that Rare wouldn't be a Kinect only studio anymore. Whatever this is.....i don't know what to think. Kinect should stay the hell away from BK. If we look at the design of Banjo, he looks like Banjo from N&B where he looked.....boxy?

more..........

Keep the faith my friend, this has to be some kind of joke/fun thing just for that event. MS is well aware by now that Kinect gaming is dead, and Spencer is DAMN well aware that people want a proper BK. But i would be lying if i didnt say that i hope we get clarity on this real soon...like...now.

No idea...what to make of this.

I guess we now wait for E3....good to know this wasn't Rare's work though.

Of all the Rare IP's, BK is the one I want the LEAST.

so true lol !

Just damn glad it's not as worse as it first seemed...cause if that was the real deal, BOTH MS and Rare had lost it, big f***ing time.
