Kinect Topic

This thread reminds me, I forgot to sell my Kinect.

An accessory whose only purpose for most is to verbally pause/play a show or perform some minor navigation should have always been optional and never been billed/advertised as an integral part of the Xbox One by Microsoft. It's embarrassing and an insult to our intelligence.

Aside from some voice commands (when they actually work and don't force me to pick up a remote/controller out of frustration), most of the technology has gone to waste in that thing for most of the audience that bought it. I would have paid $25 for it, but it's not worth anywhere near the $100-$150 MS values it at.

It's shocking how little MS learned from its experiences with the first Kinect. Their team either had no idea what they were doing or were full of a bunch of yes men too scared to speak up.

Also my daughter loves the kinect because her favorite game is just dance.

That game works so great. That is a true kinect experience.

I got mine with the system before they went with a Kinect-less option. I am happy with it, even if it isn't integral to gaming right now. The ir blaster is SO nice! Either say Xbox On or pick up the controller and everything from my projector to my surround sound turns on. "Xbox, Volume Down!" is more than handy, too... or "Xbox, Watch NBC", no matter if I'm in a game or what. It communicates with everything. A better entertainment experience, for sure. I don't think people can understand the overall experience if they don't have Kinect. It makes your whole entertainment eccosystem "smart".

It is an expensive option for what it does, but it does do it well.

For standard gaming, I doubt it well ever be integral, but I bet that Hololens will use it the way it was designed, and I'm guessing that this IS what Phil is alluding to.

"Gamespot: Xbox Boss: We're Not Abandoning Kinect"

You're right, you're not abandoning it...you already abandoned it.

Microsoft is like Will's dad on that emotional episode of Fresh Prince. Poor Kinect is like "How come he don't want me man" T_T

I still think about what could have been if Kinect never existed in the first place.

I for one, love the ecosystem that MS set up with the Xbox One. I'm very happy with the One Guide, powered by Kinect, and this entertainment hub of the future. I also think the graphics are pretty fantastic, so far.

Sorry that they did not build the system you all were looking for. I'll be over there enjoying some fantastic games instead of fussing about what could have been.

Seriously, the internet is full of so much sour fecal matter.

  • If only the NES had bigger sprites, and more arcade-like graphics...
  • If only the Sega Genesis had more colors...
  • If only the SNES had a games with blood...
  • If only the PS1 had more RAM for better textures...
  • If only the Sega Saturn didn't have 2 complicated processors...
  • If only the Nintendo 64 had a CD ROM drive...
  • If only the Sega Dreamcast had... EA... Almost... Perfect...
  • If only the PS2 had...OK, not sure if any complaints with this one...
  • If only the Xbox had scalable hardware; ie, a way to make money off of it...
  • If only the Xbox 360 had better ventilation to avoid overheating, from the beginning...
  • If only the Wii wasn't a gimmick...
  • If only the PS3 had a simpler CPU or better SDK to take advantage of it...
I sure wish gaming were as simple as it used to be. Consoles by their nature are closed, and need something unique to tell them apart from one another. If console gaming is not for you, just get a PC. That was always an option, even at the top of the list!

I however, love console gaming because of their individual uniqueness. Kinect may not ever be an ideal way to control a game, but it is one hell of a companion. I really doubt that Kinect stopped them from putting da GDDR5 in the Xbox One. Even if it did, I really don't care. What would exactly look different? Ryse looks amazing! The Forza games look amazing and also happen to play well. Remember when that mattered? I can say "Xbox record that" during a turn, without removing my hands from the controller or even hitting pause. It's transparent. There is something called the law of diminishing returns. People all over the internet like to pretend that an invisible number is more important than the actual experience that they have. These people should all get PCs and stop crying, IMO.

Agreed. Kinect completes the package and is a worthy companion to have with your Xbox One. I love it with voice commands in my games too-not to mention voice controlled apps. Haters gonna hate.

I'm an Xbox guy through and through. I bought an X1 on launch day. However, 1.5+ years later I've never used Kinect for anything other than as a mic/webcam. I never try to be overly negative of Xbox as I've owned all 3 of their consoles and never a PS, but honestly Kinect is a big question mark. Voice commands are great and I use them every day, but that could be done with a mic. The camera function could be done with a cheaper device as well.

FRU (which looks like a really solid platformer from its gameplay concept alone) is getting a major revamp and will be coming out this year so they haven't completely abandoned it yet. The kinect push definitely isn't as strong as it was back in 2013 though obviously.

Edit: Also, Kinect's current price is reasonable considering other 1080p webcams cost around the same amount of money. A plain microphone and nothing more would be cheaper but a separate camera would pretty much cost the same.

As I stated before, it is expensive for a simple companion. Still, as Bgamer90 pointed out, a similarly capable webcam is going to cost about the same. Also, don't forget that you would also have to purchase an ir blaster if you wanted to use One Guide, as well as purchase the mic(s). I still don't think Kinect is necessary for a good gaming experience, but I do think that the whole entertainment experience is deeper because of Kinect. It always makes me chuckle when people say that they haven't turned on their Xbox One in months. I turn mine on just to turn my display and receiver on. This is what it was designed to do, and it does it so well that I don't think I'd be happy going back to the old way of having TV and games separate... The thought that I can snap an app to my TV screen is really cool, even if I hardly use it.

This 10000%. I would not want to go back. I had extended family over and I was showing him all of the functionality, and He was in love with it. He has a PS4, but practically had his money in hand to buy an X1 with kinect when he left, lol. He loved it. I think it helps to have someone who uses it every day to show them all it can do.

I'm hopping we get to see one last rendition of the Kinect where its built the way they intended to. Instead of leaching resources from the xbox give it its own processing units like hololense. It may bring up the price but I'd bet lunch it'd be a better, lag free n precise experience.

Funny Kinect story that happened yesterday. So i got my buddies over and we're playing NBA 2k15. I had the ball and was about to win the game. Well, one of my friends was shouting all game and the Kinect thought i was calling a timeout. So i had no timeouts when i actually needed one.. Went to call a timeout and they called a technical foul because i had none. I lost, my friends are laughing at me. Thanks Kinect. About time i unplug that PoS.

after reading that I immediately thought about Chris Webber during the UNC/ Michigan finals game of 1993

There should really be no lag (or imperceptible lag) through USB 3.0. I really think that it is the software that hasn't gotten any love recently. I know that the device is just capable of so much more. Have you seen the video for Handpose, by Microsoft Research? This is from last fall. What are they working on this for? I'd say VR/AR is most likely. Still, I'd like to see menu navigation that feels a little more advanced than what it is now, give all that they can do with it today. Currently, it is a lot more usable than on the 360, but I hardly use motion UI myself, because voice and controller are the perfect mix for me.

I had to turn off the mic in Fifa because it thought I was always swearing at the ref.

I had that happen also but i think it was NBA 2k14. The first time i played it i didn't even swear and the ref gave me a technical foul. Haven't seen that since.

Voice commands and Skype yes, games not so much. It should have been optional from the very beginning. Since there are really no great games for it there would not have been splitting the base for development.

Yeah, great vid. I use gestures all the time. Unless I'm gaming, I like to leave my controller on the table. I just wish MS would get with the 3rd party apps and show them how it's done, because there is a world of difference between navigating the dash, and navigating Youtube. It was completely removed from Netflix, and that annoys me constantly.

I never use gesture with my Kinect unless I'm forced to by certain games and the only two games are Kinect Sports and Dance Central.
