Microsoft At E3 2018

I personally liked E3 from MS last year. It was game after game. Nothing else. And they showed the most games and went over their normal time to get them all in. And I have been buying them and enjoying them.

Their last E3's have been really awesome..a shame about some of the first party games that didn't release like Fable and Scalebound. If they can bring their first party efforts to light they might recapture the hype of previous shows.

Turn 10 has listed job postings to hire people to take their game across multiple platforms. Pretty much in line with the theories that Xbox is Game Pass and Xbox Live...it’s not a console.

Plastic Warriors will be sad this year. Microsoft will formally make it official that they’ve surrendered the Plastic Wars to take their talents in a new direction. Time to speculate who the first of the next platforms will be. Nintendo?

I only care about MS games at the MS conference

I wonder if the Coalition is ready to announce something new at E3?

I thought Gears 4 was gorgeous but not a great game. I kind of just wanted it to end at one point, and it did pretty suddenly. But I’d still be interested in their next game.

There have been rumors of a Gears spinoff, haven't there? That could be interesting.

Wouldn't it be cool if Microsoft displayed a bunch of titles to be bought as ongoing exclusives and allowed the audience to choose which ones are to be bought ans become part of their portfolio? Like, make a game of it for the fans.

Then go into new acquisitions that have recently been garnered, new studios being built (seems there is the likely hood of two with the Santa Monica posting .) third party deals and features, and close out with stellar indies.

I'd pass out.. .

Depends on how they spun it off. Haven’t been interested in Gears for years now. Played the last one to beat the campaign and messed about with Horde for a few weeks but it barely held my attention.

Is anyone interested in doing the E3 bingo for Microsoft?

As much as the focus is new IP for Xbox, ironically I think this E3 is going to hinge on Halo more than ever. Halo is probably Xbox’s best chance at a short term resurgence but only if it’s disruptively good.

God of War and Zelda BOTW are currently the games of this generation and both scared old fans at first when revealed. Halo needs an evolutionary reboot. While I agree that Halo needs to grow and change, I don’t think 343 has brought about the right kind of change. 343 has made it clear they’re never going back to the slower paced, boots on the ground, no sprint Halo’s. Halo 5 is the new sandbox they want to build off of. While I disagree with this (and quite honestly am a bit sad about it) I think if they’re going to speed up Halo, they should throw the entire linear campaign in the garbage and go full speed into their own thing.

I think Spartan Powers destroy the classic simplistic sandbox but could bring about exciting campaign changes if they stop trying to pigeonhole them into a linear, typical cover shooter that many other mainstream FPS campaigns have done to death.

343 is Microsoft’s most expensive studio with their most valued franchise. 343 has to be able to deliver a 9.0 metacritic quality campaign.

I'm going to win, so don't bother. I'll just get one person to buy it for $1, then have a couple hundred people checking it and once the first hit comes, with 100 active users, we'll have the average square covered four times.

Agree to disagree -whole heartedly in fact. Microsoft is not going to run to Halo this E3. Halo 6 won't arrive until next year so they won't even advertise until E3 2019.

Maybe a Halo spin off. But I can guarantee we won't hear about Halo 6 at all.

Dno69 joked about Gears as a kart racer. That would be fun, lol.

I never got into Gears, personally. I tried a couple times, but it's just not my thing.

Really? I think we'll see a teaser of some kind, at least. Fall 2019 falls within the 18 month window they've talked about. Announcing a new Halo would be a big shot in the arm, especially if coupled with the remastered MCC announcement.

I can't see them leaving out their biggest franchise until just a few months before it releases. I mean, you've got to milk it a little. And as we've been saying, it's "do or die" for MS this year. Time to pull out the big guns.

The only good reason not to announce Halo 6 is if they have another coming before it. Even if Halo 6 is fall 2019 why wouldn't you want your biggest game to be at 2 E3s?

Just put a young child with Master Chief. That seems to be what sells at the moment. I’m JK of course.

Halo Collection will be featured heavily I think.

I can. Halo 6 is a given. Consider the mass of disgruntled gamers who would bitch about" oh, lord. Another Halo. Why doesn't this franchise just die?! ,etc, etc.. )

I think there will be a couple of knowns but more unknowns this E3 - by a fairly wide margin would be my guess..

Who gives a damn what internet trolls say? Nobody asked for Zelda, Mario, God of War or Uncharted to die when those sequels were revealed. Many gamers who loved Halo:CE through Halo 3 don’t currently own Xbox’s. If Halo returned to glory, it might be the thing that returns a lot of gamers because classic Halo was unique and still doesn’t have a mainstream competitor.

If Halo stopped trying to chase COD and innovated in other ways (like AI, physics, dynamic large scale battles) it would be one of the biggest stories of E3. It’s been a decade since Halo was considered top of its class.

Halo 5's multiplayer is outstanding.

I agree (as 1500 of game time indicates) and like both old and new Halo multiplayer...

...but I think classic Halo is easier to build maps and campaign around. Also wouldn’t be a horrible idea for 343 to rotate between styles and just continue to support the previous games longer than they have.

A lot of people don’t feel compelled to buy Xbox’s to play their once favorite franchise because there’s other FPS games with enhanced mobility and ADS. Classic Halo still doesn’t have competition in single or multiplayer. Titanfall 2, on the other hand, is a better enhanced mobility game in campaign. I think classic simplistic Halo has a better chance of having a good campaign while bringing back some of the lost community.

I don't think its style has much to do with the map quality. I pretty sure 343 just isn't particularly good at level design, especially in multiplayer. They need help in that area.

I loved classic Halo, but any more it's a dirge to play at that speed. In addition, my skill level is better now than it was then, so the campaign doesn't offer much anymore outside of the story, which really drags in parts. Regardless, I don't think returning Halo to where it started will really address any perceived shortcomings the campaign might have.

Halo 5 was their first go at map making, 4s maps were done by Certain Affinity.

5s maps may not be the most memorable but they are entertaining and very technical and intricate designed in part to take advantage of the new abilities.

I'd be stunned if we don't hear anything about Halo 6 this E3.

I don't think MS is going to let some disgruntled gamers hold them back from pushing their most successful franchises. They'll be talking about Gears and Forza, too, probably, and you could say the same thing about them. Halo is their premiere franchise. They have to be pushing that. The fanbase would love it.

I think Rainbow Six and Doom showed that you could keep the unique identity of the original games and evolve everything else around it. Problem with Halo 5’s appeal is it didn’t really invent anything new that it changed. It borrowed from faster games. Gamers that prefer faster games liked Halo 5 but most turned back to other fast paced games. A lot of COD fans like Halo 5 better than classic Halo’s but those same gamers jumped back to COD when it released a few weeks after Halo 5. Halo used to have its own niche. Now it shares the same playing field as other more popular games.

I do think returning Halo to a classic sandbox helps mapmaking and campaign because there’s less variables to balance. More focus can be made towards enemies and dynamic environments when you don’t have to account for Spartan abilities and the game slows down. Can focus on making every square foot when there’s less square feet to focus on.

Finally, in the end Xbox needs more differentiators. Games that occupy their own niche. Not necessarily aim only for the most mass appeal checkboxes. If Halo 6 losses enhanced mobility, there will be other Xbox games to fill the void including Halo 5. It’s been a decade without a single great game mirroring the simple sandbox of Halo 3.
