Multiplatform Graphics Discussion [OT]

Well, in a couple of years, you will be able to get a $400 PC that will destroy the same old (then) PS4.

In a couple years the PS4 will probably be at $199-$299. You would be hard pressed to build a PC that can match either the XB1/PS4 at the price they're right now, to include a SFF casing and a Windows installation ($100+). IMO I see no point in even comparing PC to a Console, a PC if you have the money will always have the edge.

So to summarize Dying Light PS4 vs XB1

PS4
+Higher Resolution
+Better Textures
+Better Performance (FPS)
-Lack of AF (Me thinks it was overlooked and will be patched, AF is basically a non factor when it comes to performance on modern day GPUs)

XB1
+AF
-Sub 1080p resolution
-FPS drops (down to the 20s)
-Texture loading issues (Which I believe can be fixed by a patch)

Some of you should have lived through an era like myself and some others here. In that time the box art, the book, and your imagination provided the immersion. People counting pixels, and minor differences in resolution/framerate then presenting it as some kind of big deal are feeding an irrelevant pissing contest. Take someone that doesn't check the internet for a comparison write up that tells them what to think and these petty differences would amount to zero. I bet that on a good day 0.1% of you could correctly choose which platform was which, if given a reasonable amount of identical gameplay videos of a reasonable amount of different games, without being told the corresponding console of each video.

I remember buying Amstrad CPC games on cassette tapes. The back of game boxes 80% of the time would have the Amiga or Atari ST screenshots (the best looking home versions).

So if you bought Cabal for CPC, the box would show this...

But your screen would show this...

Cross gen game from 1989.

You didn't only have to count the pixels in those days but also number of colours.

Here are some of my favorite games in my early years. Believe it or not, you would still feel a level of immersion when you compounded the box art, the story, and a little imagination. I don't recall any game at that time that had an actual ending. Winning was all about being the person in your household with the highest score. We would have "tournaments" in our house. Had some great times with the family in those days

Ps4 dev team need to get their act together, it's not the first ps4 game without A.filtering. The texture filtering is pretty poor( burry mess).

Cinematic black bars exist in the 90s already!

Ok I read a good part of what they said then I watched most of the Ps4 xb1 long video face-off expecting a difference. Honestly I couldn't see any difference and both were locked @ 30fps. The 1 dip when forwarding the video in the xb1 I noticed hit @ night while the character was standing still? A bigger zombie was jumping down from a garage. Why it dipped to 26fps? There were more areas with more going on in the daylight and the framrate was locked?

IMO if last gen face-offs didn't bother you I can't see you missing anything this time around either.

Last gen face offs never bothered me.

I have a 360.

What is still up with that lack of anisotropic filtering on PS4 though?

The ground is a blurry mess in the PS4 pic.
If we need software and side by side stills to be able to pick up on the difference IMO there isn't any. We may be wasting the finite amount of time we're given on something that isn't this important. Something like the sales comparison thread.

There are definitely some things I can notice in game without a superior counter comparison and things I can't.

Frame rate slow down (although it would have to be dips from 30 down to 25 or 60 down to 45) and tearing are things I am quite sensitive to, the former you can feel in controller response and the latter can be really ugly if most frames are tearing. A few frames of dips aren't noticeable. A single frame occasionally over 30 will cause noticeable screen judder though because of inconsistent frame pacing.

I can't really tell a game is running at 900p rather than 1080p at average viewing distance on a 40 inch set and probably wouldn't even realise Dying Light is 1536 x 1080 instead of 1920 x 1080.

720p is pretty noticeable upscaled but 900p - 1080p is a really small margin to me on screen, despite it being over half a million pixels difference (two times the pixel resolution of PS2!).

I wonder why the devs aren't implementing AF for the PS4 version for this title. The ICE team said that AF doesn't affect performance negatively and other multiplatform devs have no problem implementing it either. Hoping they'll fix it with a patch soon.

"As things stand, anyone with an interest in the game should be able to enjoy it on any of the three platforms. Between the two console versions we definitely have to give the nod to the PS4 version with its improved frame-rate and better texture streaming, its higher resolution, and a near complete lack of screen-tear. However, anyone with a decent gaming PC should definitely stick to the computer version as it offers excellent scalability alongside further improved visuals. Ultimately, we were impressed with Techland's first release on this new generation of gaming hardware and look forward to seeing more of Chrome Engine 6 in the future."

In the one point of the article that allows you to compare static pics from each platform I noticed the little icon to accomplish the job....is a magnifying glass. Just an observation.

These consoles are weak either bring some lookers or bring the next gen.

Good news, there are going to be some lookers in The Order, Uncharted, Halo 5 and Quantum Break. Plus many more for the entire generation.

2020 for next gen, earliest.

I kind of miss the days when there were things on PC that simply couldn't be done on console. Those examples still exist. But very few publishers are pushing the platform like they used to.

Everything has been streamlined for cross platform ports, with PC getting better (but sometimes broken) versions of console games.

I mean how long did we have to wait for a decent version of Half-Life 2? It came to Xbox but was stripped down. It wasn't until Orange Box that we got a really good conversion.

Perhaps this generation, we'll see more studios really push the PC version beyond the typical improved performance and resolution advantages. Thats why I'm curious about GTA 5 PC and Witcher 3 and seeing what kind of visual features they'll employ.

Some of the pics of old games in here remind me of the days we used to play games just for fun. It feels like a different lifetime. I don't get why people are so concerned with what console is putting out better graphics. With that said, the PS4 is the more powerful machine. People need to get over it.

True but my PC is more powerful then Wii U,PS4 and XBO combined :p

You have a point. Well played. I got over PC being the the most powerful platform the day it was proven. Show me the games, that's all i care about. If we could upgrade consoles like we could a PC, the world would be a better place. There's no denying that. ;)

Imo, even if the hardware confgurations were switched between PS4 and the Xbox One, I think Sony would still be putting out better looking games. Just based on the first party talent.

To me they're too similar to even care about whatever advantages one has over the other. As TD said, it's about the games.

Nah MS invest mad money into devs.
Games looked better 2 gens because the hardware was better.
